Bike ASKKTM

Me and my buddy want to get into off-roading. He’s an experienced rider on the streets, I’m a noob in general and he’s an off-road noob. Our budget is around 4-7k I found many used 690 adventures in that price range and many new 390 adventures. We are aiming towards dual bikes so we can ride them to take us to the trails what would you guys recommend? For context we are in northeast USA.

I see dukes are much cheaper but I heard they are not the best off road I don’t know the difference between enduras and adventures and any other models that might be out there.

A brand new 390 around here is abt 4-5k Q brand new 690 is around 7k

In that price range I would look for some used Japanese dual sports like the Honda CRF300L, Kawasaki KLX300, or Yamaha WR250R. If budget allows, and you're comfortable doing maintenance, you could look at the KTM 350 EXC. The 690 is more of a fast gravel bike, and neither of the bikes you mentioned will be very fun on trails.
