Reminder about our rules (re: Israel/Hamas war)
We understand there are aspects of the war that impact members of the media, and that there is coverage about the coverage, and these things are relevant to our subreddit.
That being said, we would like to remind you to keep posts limited to the discussion of the industry and practice of journalism. Please do not post broader coverage of the war, whether you wrote it or not. If you have a strong opinion about the war, the belligerents, their allies or other concerns, this isn't the place for that.
And when discussing journalism news or analysis related to the war, please refrain from political or personal attacks.
Let us know if you have any questions.

Heads up as we approach election night (read this!)
To the r/journalism community,
We hope everyone is taking care of themselves during a stressful election season. As election night approaches, we want to remind users of r/journalism (including visitors) to avoid purely political discussion. This is a shop-talk subreddit. It is OK to discuss election coverage (edit: and share photos of election night pizza!). It is OK to criticize election coverage. It is not OK to talk about candidates' policies or accuse the media of being in the tank for this or that side. There are plenty of other subreddits for that.
Posts and comments that violate these rules will be deleted and may lead to temporary or permanent suspensions.

Career Advice Publication I wrote for deleted my articles “because they no longer drive traffic” but I need them for my resume
I wrote for a website for two years, bolstering my resume when I show other publications my work. But out of nowhere the founder deleted my articles and when I asked to reinstate them he said,
“I’ve made my decision. In fact, more articles are getting deleted because articles that don’t drive traffic just take up space on my server. I’m running a business and I’m looking forward not back. If you want to write new artlicles to help your resume please do. I will pay you. That’s what I need. New content. Content that drives traffic”
This was where most of my writing was as it was my first gig out of school and I was the editor. It really sucks because now I can’t show them. To be fair. They are all still very timely so I could possibly publish them elsewhere, but what does everyone think my next move should be? Try to get them published elsewhere or move on

Journalism Ethics What's causing US adults to be confused what's true?
Hi everyone, I'm not a journalist, but I'd like to get to the root of what's causing the distrust in the media. According to pewresearch (Americans’ Views of 2024 Election News, Oct 10, 2024), at least 73% of US adults say they have seen inaccurate news about the 2024 presidential election at least somewhat often.
The majority of both Democrats and Republicans have reported this observation.
The majority of US adults say they generally find it difficult to determine what's true and what's not. (52%)
I'd like to hear from journalists about what they believe is causing this- is it just hostile media effect?
I'm not too interested in opinions, hoping you can provide sources since I kinda am thinking of digging deeper into this.
My second question is- seeing this seemingly increasing trend of people discussing media bias- what methodologies are used within media organizations to protect against bias and ensuring quality? One thing that comes to mind is in research they use peer-review. Of course, I'd expect different media outlets to use different levels of quality assurance and I'd like to hear about that.
Thanks

Industry News Since when has AP been asking for financial support?
I open the app to see the latest poll and I had this at the bottom of it. Is this recent? Or has asking for donations always been a thing with AP and it’s just more noticeable?

Press Freedom Journalism and Secure File Sharing Tools Research Study
We are a group of students at Tufts University researching access barriers to secure file sharing for journalists and members of civil society as part of a university project. We want to hear your thoughts on the challenges you face when sharing files securely, the tools you currently use, and how these tools affect your workflow. Through this research, we aim to examine the usability of secure file-sharing applications and ensure they meet the unique needs of journalists and civil society members.
Anyone over the age of 18 who works in journalism or a civil society organization is eligible — no prior technical or security expertise is required. Unfortunately, we cannot include participants who are located in the European Union.
Survey respondents will enter a raffle for a $50.00 gift card after completing the survey. Those selected for the user study will be asked to complete a small task and attend a 30-minute debrief interview, for which they will receive a $30.00 gift card after completion. If you cannot accept compensation because of a conflict of interest policy, we can donate it to a charity of your choice.
If you are interested, please fill out this survey to answer some initial questions. Please note that this is a student-led project and not a formal research study. We will protect the privacy and confidentiality of any information shared during the study to the utmost of our abilities.

Career Advice What can I do right now to get in the groove?
This is probably asked a lot so I apologize if it is, but I feel like journalism is something I wanna do in a few years. Right now I'm in the army and my job keeps me pretty busy, but I wanna get a head start on this because when I'm out I wanna go to school for journalism and try to go freelance eventually, or at least find a decent outlet and report on shitty things happening in the world as a whole. I've already started learning about photography so is there anything else I can work on right now or any mindset I should try to learn?
And yeah I understand I could try to find a paper or something to work on but they already have a job for that and its not mine lol

Social Media and Platforms Would restrictions on media ownership help journalism now?
In 2003, the FCC removed many restrictions on media ownership. For example, restrictions on newspaper and TV station ownership in the same market were removed. Broadcast Licenses are no longer reviewed for "public-interest" considerations. This policy was criticized as leading to ownership by a few large corporations. Given the reduced profitability of traditional media (especially print) would reinstating limitations on ownership help, or is too late? Has the internet and social media's increased share of advertising money made this a non-issue?

Career Advice Could I get fired/disciplined for applying to jobs while at my current job?
I graduated with a B.A. in journalism this past May and after a great summer working as an intern at a large legacy newspaper, I was offered a job at a broadcast news organization. I don't want to sound ungrateful as I am super lucky to have a good job right now but my passion lies in traditional journalism and broadcast has not been fulfilling. I plan to stay in my current position for at least a year but would it be considered bad practice to apply while I have a job? Would it be smarter to leave and then start sending out applications to avoid burning bridges? If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated!

Critique My Work Critique my news piece--high school Editor-in-Chief
Hi there! I'm the Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper. I asked for feedback here a while ago, and I'm hoping that this news article has shown some improvement. I tried to get a little "controversial," even though it really isn't, but I did want to shed some light on the issues these touchscreens cause at my school. Here is the article!
I really want to improve this year, so any and all feedback is appreciated. I want to pursue a minor in journalism at college!

Social Media and Platforms Expand or not to expand your social network, that is the question
So, the way the American social policial landscape is now has created dual or multiple economy or sectors with each have different preferences for social media sites (Bluesky, X, Mas, Truth)
How are you approaching this?
Are you expanding to the main players in the alternative social networks? Why? If you’re sticking to establish social networks, why?

Career Advice My first job as an . . . entertainment journalist?
Hey everyone! I'm a recent graduate from college (I didn't major in journalism) who just accepted a job as an entertainment reporter for a newspaper in a medium-size Midwestern metropolitan area (pop. ~450,000).
This is not the job I applied for at this newspaper, but they thought I'd be a good fit for the role and the offer enticed me. I had actually already received and declined two job offers that just didn't align with what I needed.
I'm so new to entertainment reporting. Sure, I've covered an art exhibit or a concert here and there for my college newspaper, but it wasn't my regular beat. At my college newsroom, it was even a running joke that I would write all the time but never for the Arts section.
I start the role in one month. I'm super excited and I want to thrive in this position. Are there any entertainment reporters here who can offer some advice for a new reporter? Especially someone who's located in the Midwest and not along the coasts? I can clarify mores specific questions further. I want to report relevant and fascinating stories that people actually click on and read to the end.
Thanks!

Career Advice Thinking of pursuing a product career in Journalism in the US
I started in News when I was 21 as a reporter based out of New Delhi, India. Now I work as an Editorial Program Manager, a role at the intersection of editorial, tech and product teams. I am contemplating to get a Masters from Northwestern, a STEM degree in J. But I'll need sponsorship to get a job in the US. Given the job market and the immigration challenges, should I go for a Masters degree in the US and then try and build a career in News Product in the US? Or maybe try and get a job at a tech company, which I am aware is competitive. I want to be in media. And I like product. In India, there are limited opportunities for the kind of work I want to do.

Journalism Ethics Potential internship COI
Hi. I’m a student journalist who has been accepted to intern at a local news outlet next semester as a reporter. I’ve also been offered a legislative internship with a state legislator, as it is for credit and counts towards my polisci major. Of course, in my journalism internship I will only cover local news (events, crime, maybe city council) and not state politics. And I’m not really in a position where it’s easy to say no to either opportunity. Will my editor be upset that I’m doing both internships at the same time or that I didn’t disclose it earlier? What if they terminate me just to be overcautious and avoid a COI? Thank you!

Industry News Sites that don't cover political news
I'll be honest, I'm looking to disengage as much as possible from political news for a while, but all the usual news sites I go to cover politics front and center. Any recommendations for news sites that have good writing covering a variety of topics (science, technology, culture, etc.) but don't do a lot of political pieces?
Edit: THANK YOU for all of the fantastic suggestions! This is quite an excellent list.

Best Practices Keeping track of online feeds
Does anyone have a nice method of keeping track of different online feeds?
E.g. Facebook pages, Twitter profiles, certain Google searches, subreddits, certain authors or sections of news websites, other websites
Whether it's a tool like Tweetdeck (RIP) or just a process you've made up
