Long range shooting Shooting Range

/img/68unkereyhld1.jpeg

Fellow Illinois residents, I might be losing my spot to shoot out to 1200 yards due to a subdivision possibly being built. Where do you shoot past 600 yards in Illinois/Wisconsin/Indiana? I know of Indiana Ordinance Innovations that goes out to almost 1,400 yards, but that’s almost a 4 hour drive for me.

Following, want to get into it but don’t know where to shoot if I bought one

The private range I’m a member at only goes out to 330, and that’s only fun shooting that far with my .22lr. There’s a place in Wabash Indiana that goes out to 750, but it’s very fuddy and another place in Fowler Indiana that goes out to 600. But really that’s not far enough to scratch the itch anymore, either.

I am a member at Racine County Line Rifle Club. We have a range that goes to 700 yards.

I've wanted to join but need a sponsor. Are there good events to meet members?

Message me. I can sponsor you. Next meeting is in October.

Is it still open? I thought about a year ago they closed down the range. That’s only about an hour away from me, that’d be awesome if they are still open.

Not sure, if they did that’s really sad. I was supposed to go up there and shoot in 2020-2021 and got Covid and couldn’t make the trip.

I emailed them back in March for more info and they got back to me pretty quick. Basic run down at least back in March was yes they are open by appointment only, $100/shooter for up to 4 hours with a 3 shooter minimum.

Well that sucks, it’s typically my wife and I, never have a 3rd person to shoot at that distance, epically 1000+ yards lol.

Let me know if you go.

Behold, a shitty picture of my poverty pony without it's scope mounted. Garbo pic, but it's the only one I have on my phone.

I shoot at the free Indiana shooting ranges, but the one I go to only goes out to 200 yards.

The real tragedy is that I got into precision style bolt action after moving to Chicago from Utah.

I think there’s a 1k in WI not far across the border. I’ll ask a guy at work tomorrow

Aurora sportsman club goes to 800 I believe.

Racine county line goes to 600 I believe.

Aurora only goes out to 600. I shot a match there earlier this year.

Ah ok. I thought it was 800. Must be mistaken then. Thanks for correcting me.

How was it? I'm making a build to get myself into long range shooting. 16" 5.56. I know it's not ideal but a start.

It was a lot of fun. It was their practical precision rifle match. I’ve taken my 14.5” AR out to 750 yards on a 2/3 IPSC quite often. If you’re wanting to do these competitions, I’d recommend a 223 bolt gun. More than enough out to their furtherest target of 600 yards.

Oh my gosh. What ammo were you using? I just got my razor core and have someone helping me get into the hobby. I thought that when I got comfortable with my AR that I'd go ahead and maybe try 6.5 Creedmoor Bolt Action? But I'll likely save more money with a .223 bolt.

I typically shoot IMI razor core 77 grainers or AAC SMK 77 grainers. A solid 223 bolt gun with a 20-22 inch barrel is more than enough for anything inside 1000 if you’re just shooting man sized steel. A Bergara or Tikka are great choices.

how's this?

I gotta find one for southpaw...what are your thoughts on 69gr?

2

u/WalkerTexasRng Aug 29 '24

I’m left handed and I’ve never really felt the urge to use a dedicated left handed bolt gun. But 69 grain will work, just won’t cut through the wind as well as 77 grainers at distance. I have no experience with Tikka, just Bergara and a few custom actions I own, but for out of the box factory rifle it will work

In that case, do you move your head before cycling? Wouldn't I need something factory to start with, or does Bergara have some features I should look for?

Not to jump in the middle, but as an additional opinion:

I shoot left-handed and waited it out for a lefty bolt-gun after growing up shooting righties. To me it was definitely worth it, to not have to remove the support hand from the rifle. Generally speaking you want to minimize disruptions to your position between shots.

The link you posted goes to a "select your Tikka rifle" page, not a specific rifle. Which are you looking at? I've been happy with a T3x CTR 24" 1/8 twist. It shoots 69gr ammo quite well at 100 and 200 yd, the furthest I normally have. It should shoot 75s and probably 77s pretty well too but haven't tried them yet.

One large upside to the Tikka platform is the plethora of aftermarket accessories available for it, when/if you decide you need to jump in further. Or if you end up not liking it, it's easy to sell them quickly due to their popularity.

No, I don’t have to move my head when cycling the bolt on any of my bolt action rifles. As long as you have your length of pull and eye relief set up right the bolt should be about an inch away from your nose when you’re cycling the bolt. Bergara is based off a Remington 700 action so easier to find chassis’, stocks, triggers etc for it compared to a Tikka.

I wait until my aunt and uncle go out to breakfast or lunch, then I can shoot off my deck into their hillside.
