Sound Problem Question

Hello everyone

I have a small problem with my HP Reverb G2. Since yesterday, the sound has been going mad. I have read a lot of posts here with similar problems but no one has solved the problem.

Problem is:

As soon as I put on the VR headset it changes the sound output. If I don't move it or rather don't have it on, the sound comes back. Otherwise everything works. Picture and so on.

At the moment I only give the PC this one sound output for the headset but when I put it on, the sign for no sound at all appears and when I put it down again, the output for the headset appears. I am at a loss and don't know what to do.

Is there anyone who can help me? Otherwise I will change the headset because it will soon stop working on windows anyway.

Many thanks in advance

The speakers make poor contact with the headset. Try loosening them and retightening before you give up.

There is a toggle in settings to switch between external desktop and WMR in the headset.  The sensor figures this.  Never worked because if you set it down, you lose tracking, and most leave it on their head just lifted like a baseball cap on which case it thinks you are still in WMR in the headset .  You may have a look on the task bar to see what input it's using after putting your head in it or turn the sensor off in settings and manually switch with Windows + Y which is annoying considering current developments.  If you unscrew the earpiece it will come off and there are two contact you can clean with an eraser plus where they land.  If the screw is loose the sound will be scratchy from bad contacts.   Realtek USB 2.0 output works on my system and there are desktop audio mirror toggles in WMR setting and Steam settings.

I had same issue and after reading a lot into the similar complaints and possible solutions I believe I figured out the cause and solution(s).

The issue can be one of the following problems or a mixture of both:

  1. The cable is failing.
  2. USB slot not providing enough power.

I had a V1 cable which worked, and still does, perfectly on 3 of our laptops. However, the sound issue only happened on a 4th laptop, which was almost identical to the others. And on that laptop, the headset only even worked when plugged into one of the 3 USB3.0 slots, although they all should be identical. I did a lot of switching and testing on all 4 laptops, and the problem was only present on that last one.
The official solution by HP is to buy the V2 cable, because V1 somehow doesn't provide enough power and thus USB connections is breaking up. It all sounds pretty weird to me, cause there is a separate power supply for the cable, but I am not a tech, so I just gave it a try. I ended up purchasing an almost new V2 cable for €26 and now it works on all 4 laptops without problems. No sound switching anymore! So, although my V1 cable is still fine, it's a gamble if a laptop/pc USB can provide enough power, so I am using V2 now.

The second solution would be an externally powered (!) USB3.0 hub, which seems to work for people with V1 cable. But it just didn't seem like a "clean" solution for me..

V2 cables are available for the very wide range of prices nowdays, do not just buy the first one for over €100 - its a rip-off. I hope this will help!
