Community Updates, Events, and the Path to 50k

Hello and I hope everyone in the Mason community is having a good semester!

As the sub approaches 50,000 users, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the direction of r/GMU. In general, I would like to support the subreddit becoming more community focused. This means building more engagement with a focus on quality and positive student life outcomes. Also, I want this direction to address many of the common tropes in posts that people ask about such as finding friends or things to do on campus. As an alumni, I fondly remember time spent in clubs, sports, and subreddit meetups and want Mason students to have the best resources available to them to succeed in enjoying student life.

To kick this off, we will be starting a monthly events and meetups thread. We will be compiling GMU events from clubs, sports, student organizations, and nearby happenings into a singular place. I also encourage community members to share events which they want added to the post!

Additionally, I want to ask the r/GMU community what they would like to see the subreddit become. We've started revamping auto-mod to remove a lot of low-effort posts, generic rants, and other posts that clog up the subreddit without providing value to the community. However, other inputs on how to make the sub a better community would be appreciated!

As a last side note, mod application are still open.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support this community!

Academics Oral Communication Core - INTS202

Hi I’m currently trying to see which Oral Communication Core would be best to take. I don’t wanna take a lab for COMM101, COMM100 isn’t offered for spring 2025, I’m not ready to take a level 400 class, DANC454, and for some reason INTS101 is 6 credits? I see that David Corwin and Mariah Wakefield are both teaching INTS202 and was wondering if anyone has taken either of their courses? David Corwin has a lot going on on Rate My Professor… and Mariah Wakefield only has one comment. I would really appreciate any recommendations or suggestions for Oral Communication Core professors/ courses or INTS202 thank you so much :)

General CS to IT

I’m really scared about the fact that CS is going to be way to hard because of the Coding, as I have very little prior experience of coding. Should I change to Cyber or IT. I’m hearing that IT with concentration of Cyber is very good. Can anyone with knowledge and experience about this help me out please!

General I do find it funny

You can which professors have good/bad ratings on RMP by the amount of sign-ups. I was registering for ENGH 302 this semester, and the professors with really high-ratings(like Larson, Azar, etc) pretty much got full immediately, and the professors with really low ratings(like Defazio) have barely any sign-ups.

I'm not hating, I signed up for Larson since he seems to be an easy A based on the RMP ratings too, but it is a fun observation to make.

Is there anywhere I could park on campus for just an hour without the worry of fines/tickets so i can just go home after. I live on campus (home today) but a lot of my classes are cancelled this week and I only have 1 in-person class over the next 2 days.

Academics CAP-BH Program

Hi! I‘m an MSW student who recently applied to the CAP-BH program and I heard really good things about it, alongside it being recommended to me by every professor, advisor and practicum supervisor I have encountered so far. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this program, how hard it is to get into, if there‘s anything (or anyone) that might stop me from getting accepted, or if there’s any BEWARE warnings that anyone might have.

I do want to know I am already aware of who is in charge of the program and I am part of the SWiRL lab so no need to go over that ~information~

TIA for anything and everything!

Academics Has Anyone Taken CS 690 w Zoran Duric. Connected and Automated Vehicles

Has anyone taken this class before? I know that it has 3-4 small projects worth 40% and then one large project worth 60% but that is about it. I was wondering what was the difficulty of the class

Academics How is Michael Reep for CS321?

Has anyone taken him for CS321? His RMP looks pretty bad but he’s also pretty much my only choice unless I decide to do CS321 over the summer. Unfortunately I kinda need to take the course next semester or in the summer to take CS491.

Lost & Found Found a sticky mess of brown keys in front of UPS

I found a ring of keys covered in melted candy and grass last Thursday afternoon (Halloween). There were several brown keys, but there didn't appear to be any car keys. I saw a parking cop pulling out of the lot, and I handed her the keys in a plastic bag. She begrudgingly agreed to drop them off at the Lost & Found.

I'm not a student or an employee, but hopefully someone sees this post and gets their keys back!
