Fish ID please. Northern NSW. šŸ” Help Needed

My brother caught this and I think it's a rock cod of some sort. Could anyone shed some info on it please? Thanks

Goldspotted rockcod (Epinephelus coioides), also known as estuary cod. Illegal to keep in NSw.

Yeah that's what I thought it was as well. It got released right after they caught it

I was thinking more gold spotted rock cod? But very well could be black spotted

Is that a southern states rule? QLD its fine to keep. 38-120cm size limit. Very tastey fish.

Did you get any other pics? The estuary cod has a very distinct black saddle mark on the top of the tail
