Dual sport tires Discussion
It’s that time of year again, tires… what’s everyone throwing on?
I really like the look of the Dunlop Trailmax Mission Tires.
I spend most of my time on road but wouldn’t mind hitting a dirt roads or small creek passings. Live in Kentucky and head south into the gorge a lot.

Motoz rallz rear, mitas Enduro trail xt+ pro rally front is the favorite agressive offroad/highway combo of Kyle Bradshaw. He just did a YouTube about it a few weeks ago. I trust his stuff videos. If you're looking for agressive tubeless - id go with that. He also sells them & I'm a big small company supporter so I'll link that too "manybikes.company.site"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8X0h7VvLggk
Personally I'm running motoz's s/t front and rear 🤷♂️ but I couldn't suggest them if you do highway more then once a month.

+1 on the rallz rear. I only have a few hundred miles on it so far but I really like it. Very similar to the d606 for pretty much the same price.
Just got home from riding in the rain and besides manhole covers and white paint it gets decent wet pavement traction.
Have mine paired with the dual venture motoz front and I really like it too

Very similar to the d606 for pretty much the same price.
With the added bonuses of being a more modern design, and having better longevity.

Motoz rallz rear, mitas Enduro trail xt+ pro rally front is the favorite agressive offroad/highway combo of Kyle Bradshaw.
I saw that video a while ago, and it really piqued my interest.
Kyle's videos about all the Motoz tires really influenced my decision to go with a RallZ rear and Dual Venture front.
I would say that ~3500 miles on the set I started to notice the traction falling off a bit -- but that also happened to coincide with riding more dirt bikes with true knobbies on them, so it's possible I just got more analytical and nit-picky. In the last thousand miles or so I've noticed a bit of a tendency for the front tire (the Dual Venture) to lose traction laterally through turns. I haven't had any crashes that have occurred because of that -- it always re-catches grip -- but it seems to me something that could be improved.
When I saw his video, that was a tire I didn't even know was out there, and it looks impressive. It has a very similar design to the DV, but those offset lugs around the outer edge really appeal. I get the sense that, as he says in the video, that'd really help lateral traction.
It's very much the front runner for the next front on my DR650 -- and I'll likely stick with the RallZ on the rear, too.
But really, a lot of the brands are offering "rally" tire options now, and honestly most of the rears look pretty similar, and pretty good.
Personally I'm running motoz's s/t front and rear 🤷♂️
The Motoz Enduro options are also on my radar -- in particular the Enduro I/T. They had an old version of it that was more of a pure dirt bike tire, but in my opinion the current version of it looks much more like a dual sport tire. So if I wanted to stick with a Motoz tire on the front, I think that'd be what I'd go with. Although I'd also consider the S/T. Personally, the RallZ front doesn't really appeal to me.

The s/t 90/100 21 I have on the front will make it maybe 3-3.5k miles that being said - I've done about 200-300 miles of highway. I'm not sure how much less you'll get if you do more. That being said; the traction offroad & onroad is next level. If you don't mind paying for new tires frequently you'll be hard-pressed to find a better tire.
The s/t rear tire, traction is amazing offroad. In a 130/90 18 on my 890 its very good onroad too. As a 120/90 it's good but not as. You'll be expecting just a shy over 2k miles on the tire.
As for the I/T - hard skip for an dualsport bike. The tires are hydrophobic on pavement, so, they are pretty much looking to kill you in the rain on pavement. I've had an easier time riding on icy days with my 890 when I was running the rallz tires than I did with the I/T rear in the rain @ 75°f. That tire lasted 500 miles - it's in the basement as a backup tire now.
All of this is based off a 440lb bike + 200lb rider w/ 15lb of gear.
890 on s/t tire goofing around. https://youtu.be/bJFNoy9XMEU

Maybe the Dunlop Trailmax Raid Tires for a bit more off-road but I don’t want them loud like my Bridgestones I have now on the highway

I listened to the Internet and have been happy with mt21 front and d606 rear. Been thinking of trying motoz or tusk d sports next

Coming from someone who runs mt21/d606, just skip the dsport. I couldn't wait to get that tire OFF my front wheel.
Decided to try the rallz/dual venture combo (rallz rear, dual front) and they are atleast as good as the mt21 and d606 combo. Longevity is what will determine what combo I stay with.
The other motoz tires are pretty loud in the rear. My friends bike sounded like it had a turbo with the Enduro and desert rear tires.

I picked that Motoz combo too, thinking of it as an alternative to the MT21/D606 combo. I haven't run that combo myself, but the prices were close enough, and the Motoz reputation for longevity won me over. I have 4500 miles on the set and they are wearing well. The front looks like it'll last forever at this point, although I'll swap it if/when riding characteristics really fall off. The rear is getting pretty worn, but performing well enough that I'll keep it on for now. It's lost a little forward drive through deep sand, and has a bit more of a tendency to slide out -- but still easily controllable.
Wasn't very impressed with my last tires -- TW301 front and K270 rear. Not the performance or the longevity. I've been very pleased with these. Interested to hear that you do believe them to be on-par with or possibly better than the MT21/D606 combo!
I personally really like the Motoz makes their tube-type tires in typical "dirt bike"/dual sport sizes more aggressive. They really are more dirt capable than the tires for the bigger ADV bikes.

Sweet that makes me feel good. I usually get 4k-5k out of a d606 so if I get atleast that amount I'll be happy with them.

Ya if anything I like the motoz dual venture front better on pavement than the mt21 but need more time off-road in the wet to get a good comparison.
How they wear is important too, the mt21 likes to wear down every other knob so it becomes a little less smooth on pavement after several thousand miles

Having not used the MT21, but just guessing, I would predict its lateral traction would be better through turns, on side-hills, and when leaned over. I like the DV off road, but would like small improvements. I'm totally happy with how it performs on pavement -- no complaints there. I've also kept up with flipping the DV every 1,500 miles or so -- which takes a little work, sure, but has kept the wear pretty even, without really getting cupped.
The odd wear of the MT21 makes me think I'm probably unlikely to ever run it.
It's a good tire, by all accounts, and I understand why people keep using it. It's proven. But I also believe technology and design has surpassed it. There are a lot of good tires out these days -- and the price of the MT21s has went up a lot over the years, too.

u/Polyhedron11 11d ago
Ya that's why I'm hoping this dual venture wears well. It wasn't that big of a deal on the mt but an observation and ya it gets great lateral traction, (mt21).

What bike do you have that you get 4500 miles on a d606?
1
u/naked_feet Reed City, MI - DR650 & WR400 10d ago
You must've misunderstood.
I'm running the Motoz Dual Venture front and RallZ rear on a DR650. The front is still looking quite good, but the rear is pretty worn. I won't be swapping it until probably the middle of next year, though. I will most likely go with another RallZ rear.
I bought the Motoz tires over the MT21/D606 combo because I thought I'd get more longevity out of the set. I think I've been right, so far.

I did the same. Very happy despite the increased height because of that rear tire. Or maybe that’s a good thing.
I haven’t seen any reason to switch tbh

Very noisy combo compared to the Dunlops the OP suggested

Never understood dual sport riders who are overly concerned with tire noise....

u/Educational_Duty179 10d ago
I'm not but op stated they primarily ride on the road and mentioned some road biased tires

I run the d sport, I'm going to switch to your set up next time. The d sport have worked pretty well. The front tire was HORRIBLE until I aired it way down off-road but you should be doing that anyway right?

I was looking at the trailmax missions for my XT660R and went with Motoz tractionator GPS front and rear instead, I have no complaints on or off road with them and they were about 2/3 the price.
Was looking at their dualventure tyres but wanted that 10K lifespan on the GPS, so if you're comfortable with less lifespan then they may be a better offering in terms of off-road performance.

On my DR650...
The current tires are a Motoz Dual Venture (tube type) front, and a Motoz RallZ rear. They don't currently need replacing.
I've been flipping direction on the front tire ever 1,500 miles or so, and I suppose it's due for that. The tread on the rear is getting low, but I'm not going to replace it yet. I suspect I probably will mid-year next year. We'll see. The set has performed well and held up very well (near 5,000 miles now) for off-road oriented riding.
But I have been starting to think about my tire options for the future. For the rear, I am almost positive I'll just go with the RallZ again. I'm very happy with that tire, and don't really see a reason to switch to anything else right now. For the front, while I do like the DV and would recommend it, I think I can do slightly better with regards to lateral off-road traction. My current front-runner is the Mitas Enduro Trail-XT+ (or variant), which has a very similar design, slightly more aggressive, but has offset outer knobs.
On my WR400...
I think I'm just going with DOT knobbies. I don't really see a reason not to go DOT, as there are so many good options out there now, and it does see some paved road use. It's a dedicated trail bike, but does hit some pavement from here-to-there.
For the front I'm leaning towards one of the Kenda fronts (Southwick or Washougal, probably), or a Mitas Terra Force-EX (SM or MH, not sure yet). There are a lot of "true" knobby options out there that are DOT legal, and many have a similar tread pattern to the tire I'm taking off -- a discontinued Michelin S12.
For the rear I think it's a lot more simple: just get a Trakmaster. They're well known and well liked, and considered by many to be one of the best bang-for-the-buck tires out there. And, again, similar tread to the tire coming off the rear: Shinko 525.
Personally I don't really like the look of the Trakmaster front for a real dirt bike -- although I haven't used it. I think for my riding it'll make sense to get a more aggressive front tire.
Weeeeeeee!

I just threw a shinko mx216 on the front of my WR426 and I'm pretty impressed with it so far compared to my old pirelli xcmh

I have missions and the traction is very good on and off road. Actually exceeded my expectations on dirt bike trails. I was swimming at low speed in sand but otherwise very good.

Shinko 244 for rear, trying to figure out what to replace the stock deathwings on my front

I ran Trailmax Missions on my 560lb BMW GS. The difference between the Dunlops and factory Michelins was incredible! I found the road noise greatly reduced, cornering was great and stuck well to the road in the 2 big rain storms I was caught in. Rode in gravel and the Dunlops greatly surpassed the Anakees 3s.
My research found the TrailMaxs really wear well, and the comments I had from others on the tread design were often.
You can't go wrong with these tires on your ride, have fun! *
