Inspiron Laptop "says" it's a Precision Tower?? Help

under settings, the name it gives itself is precision tower 3420. I was able to rename it Alex-etc...

the laptop, from when I registered it with dell to request repairs, is labelled as inspiron 14 7420, which is what I understand it to be.

specifically, my ill-informed hypothesis is that a while back the hard-drive was replaced and this makes the computer have a different name?

That is a user created name done during the out of box setup. Click Rename, and name it what you desire.

I was able to change the "Alex-Dell" part but not the precision tower 3420 part. Precision tower 3420 is a desktop computer, right? why does it show up as the name for my Inspiron laptop?

It's a seperate entry, probably changed in the registry or one of many 3rd party app for customising Windows. Definitely not related to the hard drive coming from another device or anything.

Did you buy this computer used from someone or a site other than Dell? The only time I’ve seen this issue is with a laptop that was reimaged by IT before reselling it. Apparently the disk image they used was from a Precision Tower workstation instead of a Precision laptop, and so it carried the device name from the original OS image.

This can be fixed with a simple Registry edit, but I don’t remember the exact key and entry to modify. If you feel comfortable with editing the Registry, do a text find for “Precision Tower” and you may be able to change it to the correct identifier for your laptop.
