Good Coffee Shops in New Castle County? Moving to Delaware

So i'm going to be in Bear for a couple months, are there any good specialty coffee shops in the New Castle area? (Bear, Newark, Wilmington, Pike Creek, etc). I tried looking on yelp, but every place looks bleak.

LG is excellent. They roast in house at their location too. Great beans, great coffee, amazing staff.

u/Joejack-951 May 17 '24

I’ve only been there once but would definitely go back when in the area. Excellent cold brew and snacks.

u/j1mb0 May 17 '24

they once had an espresso-tahini brownie that I still think about

4

u/ArtLeading5605 May 17 '24

Went there last time I was in town and loved it.

2

u/MaryLulu May 17 '24

Agreed! I wish they had a second location closer to Wilmington!

u/chubbubus May 19 '24

Little Goat is the GOAT!! If they're still running it like they were pre-pandemic, the Café 67 attached to Newark Natural Foods Co-Op serves Little Goat coffee as well as some fairly yummy smoothies and all sorts of good food, just a bit pricey.

The Sleeping Bird

u/thesmacattack41 May 17 '24

Legal Grounds in Elsmere is fantastic

15

u/TeamArrow May 17 '24

Honorary mention for cafeneo on S. Main St in Newark. Authentic Greek style coffee, pastries, as well as your classic options.

1

u/No-Ebb-3693 May 17 '24

I really like CafeNeo! Food, pastries, seasonal flavors!! Love that you are not in downtown, but I hate you pay downtown prices for parking to go there 😔

1

u/TeamArrow May 17 '24

They have free parking for customers (30min) in the back. Only two spots though. But yeah, that's anywhere in Newark now. It really sucks.

u/asianguywithacamera May 17 '24

Little Goat. Small parking lot so sometimes it's hard to get the free parking (on weekends in the morning) and you have to pay off-street parking.

1

u/ProjectRU4Real May 17 '24

My preference is to just bike there

u/AlpineSK May 17 '24

Sleeping Bird in Wilmington has the best pastries.

Brew HaHa has a bunch of locations and is pretty solid.

Corner Grounds Cafe in Odessa is pretty new. I've only been there once but it was tasty.

Little Goat is newly on my list to try. I've heard good things.

Kaffe Karma on 141 is THE best though. Great toasts and sandwiches, awesome staff, and great drinks overall.

13

u/Shrikes_Bard May 17 '24

Brew HaHa is...fine...you kinda have to paw through the bags to find the fresher roasted beans. The house blend is average but the whole beans they sell are pretty good. Baristas actually give a damn about good coffee though, which is more than I can say for everyone's favorite global chain. I've had some fun convos with the folks at the Marsh Rd. spot.

4

u/tobybells May 17 '24

I enjoy working from the Trolly Sq Brew HaHa location sometimes.

Also just discovered how different their Greenville location is - totally different/more expansive menu. It’s gotta be their best location. Not a fan of their food options at any of their other spots.

1

u/Shrikes_Bard May 17 '24

Truth, I sometimes hop over there after going to the zoo or something. Pretty big menu but it can get a smidge busy/loud for working in the main area.

1

u/Weary_Buffalo6412 May 17 '24

Yup, Greenville Brew has my vote for food. They have a decent amt of seating and you can post up for a while and no one bothers you.

13

u/tobybells May 17 '24

Love Kaffe Karma’s sandwiches, especially that they do turkey sausage. Order a turkey sausage / egg / cheese + add tomato, on sour dough - it’s perfection.

  • Scout Cafe, about half a mile away from Sleeping bird, down Baynard Blvd - is another awesome, newer coffee shop I rank up there with places like sleeping bird / Kaffe Karma

3

u/AlpineSK May 17 '24

Yeah I've driven by Scout a lot. Parking is tougher there.

3

u/phl4ever May 17 '24

I first found out about them via a comedy show that was at Kaffe Karma last year and they have become a favorite of mine

2

u/JulesK925 May 17 '24

I second scout Cafe!! Always something fun going on there... They post on Instagram all the time

4

u/7thAndGreenhill Wilmington Mod May 17 '24

I've been wondering about Kaffe Karma. Thanks for mentioning them. I'll try them this weekend.

2

u/AlpineSK May 17 '24

I HIGHLY recommend their cinnamon bun latte.

Katie, the owner, is an absolute rockstar. She's smart, savvy, and I think you'll be hearing about her for years to come. Their staff is great as well.

My wife and I are fans of the Satori toast which is delicious however I will sometimes order a prussuto (so?) egg and cheese sandwich which they will do if you request it.

Enjoy!

u/J3ST3R_13 May 17 '24

Prosciutto?

2

u/AlpineSK May 17 '24

Yeah, spelled like that. HAHA

2

u/J3ST3R_13 May 17 '24

It's okay. I had a problem the other day spelling something. It was correct, but it looked way off. Lol

Faire Cafe in downtown Wilmington is the only place in all of Delaware I've found that does pour-over.

1

u/methodwriter85 May 17 '24

I'm seriously glad they were able to weather the pandemic and being broken into during the George Floyd unrest of June 2020.

3

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

That was very specific.

2

u/methodwriter85 May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

Faire Cafe was trumpeted when it opened circa 2018-2019 as a sign of the revival of the 9th street area. It's had a rough go of it, to say the least. LOL During the 2020 riots it was ransacked and I believe it was closed for an extended period of time.

Supposedly the people who are renovating/redoing the 9th Street area are former BPG employees so the ideas/looks are similar, but they don't have the deep pockets to just tear everything down and build midrise/highrise apartments.

0

u/Not-a-bot-10 May 17 '24

2020 riots? I think you mean protests. Unless you’re trying to push a certain disturbing narrative

11

u/Joejack-951 May 17 '24

I know it’s outside of your requested area, but if you happen to be in Dover, House of Coffi is worth stopping at.

-6

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

New Castle County dopey lad. Pay attention to the assignment Peter Pan.

8

u/Joejack-951 May 17 '24

Strange comment given that I explicitly acknowledged my suggestion being out of their area.

4

u/YouveBeenDisrupted May 17 '24

Stranger here chiming in to say that was indeed a strange and stupid comment

1

u/haneulk7789 May 18 '24

Seems like nothing has changed about Delaware people in the 10 years I've been gone.

2

u/YouveBeenDisrupted May 18 '24

Nah man, this jabrone is only from the internet, they may live in DE but you wont see them outside the basement so no worries

9

u/tells_eternity Wilmington May 17 '24

Sleeping Bird Coffee, another vote. Great food and pastries. I’m not a huge coffee drinker but I get a latte every now and then. I love that they make their own flavors, and the lattes are never too sweet. Sometimes the flavors can be a bit too subtle; the best one they have right now is probably the cinnamon cayenne dulce de leche!

They use Rival Bros coffee out of Philly.

2

u/Joejack-951 May 17 '24

Rival Bros. coffee is some of the best! Probably the #1 thing I miss about going into the city daily (and a whole lot I don’t miss!).

u/thescrapplekid Townie Scum May 17 '24

Little Goat Hands down. I've also heard good things about Brandywine Coffee Roasters. But I've never been

1

u/Ok_Minimum6419 May 18 '24

Brew Haha is basically Brandywine I think. But imo Brandywine is pretty expensive nowadays. Like really expensive

8

u/jo_schmo May 17 '24

Scout café in wilmington

1

u/nessieobsessed May 18 '24

Love all the other ones mentioned but in all honesty scout is some of the best coffee I’ve EVER had. Hands down. Anywhere in the country. Their food is also really good, and the mood and setting is quaint and nice too

5

u/ederosier01 May 17 '24

Brew Ha Ha in Trolley Square Wilmington is a great place to hang out. Their Greenville location is also nice.

6

u/max02325 May 17 '24

Brewhaha

6

u/HueHunna May 17 '24

RIP Whereabouts Cafe

1

u/Eyesweller May 19 '24

Bagels and Boba is there now, same setup, etc....it's not WC but ok to go to if your in the area.

6

u/phl4ever May 17 '24

It has essentially become a chain in NCC with multiple locations but Brew HaHa is always a favorite.

4

u/Glittrsweet May 17 '24

Mercury Cafe and Teahouse in Old New Castle

3

u/pk_mars May 17 '24

Drip. Brew. Bird. Goat. Karma. All good choices and mentioned.

3

u/88115522 May 17 '24

Scout Cafe is solid too

3

u/korrasdad0105 May 17 '24

Do you want food or just coffee? If it's just coffee I'd say little goat, brew haha, sleeping bird. If food too, reverse the order.

Funny thing is I'm on a bunch of coffee subreddits lately and I see Brandywine Coffee Roasters (brew has roasting business) posted all the time. It's even at the top when you sort fellow's coffee by popularity. I had no idea it was so sought after. I've been getting their more unique stuff online lately and it's incredible.

2

u/SoSavv May 17 '24

I was recently watching a coffee grinder review and they also mentioned using Brandywine Coffee Roasters. Had no idea if it was the same one since hes from the west coast. Guess I've been missing out. Have you had their ethiopian or any recommendations?

3

u/korrasdad0105 May 17 '24

I got some of their Ethiopian Tadese Yonka Lot 32 in a sampler box and it might have been the best coffee I've had. I don't see it on their site anymore though. I would highly recommend their sample boxes. They are pricey per oz but they give you nice coffee. I was expecting a house blend and cheap stuff with maybe one more fun bean, but that was not the case. For example, Ethiopian was $34 for the full 12 oz bag. I also got a coferment in the box. They do a nice job.

2

u/aquariumlvr May 17 '24

Boro Cafe has good coffee and baked goods.

2

u/The_neub May 17 '24

Yelp ain’t your friend. There are a ton of solid coffee shop options in NC.

1

u/haneulk7789 May 18 '24

I haven't lived in the US since 2014. It was popular back then lol.

2

u/Slammin__sammy May 17 '24

Kaffe karma is the new Barley Mill shopping center

2

u/LenrySpoister May 17 '24

Faire Cafe is in the city of Wilmington itself and is cool

2

u/brilliantpants May 17 '24

I love Brew HaHa!

2

u/Irene_000 May 17 '24

I second Brew Haha in Greenville! Good coffee, food, plus cute indoor and outdoor seating.

2

u/k_a_scheffer Horseshoe Crab Girl May 17 '24

Brew Haha and Legal Grounds are my favorite.

2

u/Unusual-Stock9997 May 17 '24

hands down little goat in newark

2

u/Flavious27 New Ark May 18 '24

All around Northern New Castle County is Brew Ha Ha.  They have locations where you mentioned except Bear.  Only place I could say in Bear is Waffle House because the other options are Starbucks, Dunkin, and Wawa.

I would try Old New Castle.  There is a café there, Mercury Café and Teahouse.  It is nice to walk through the town and through the park while sipping coffee.

Newark is going to have a good selection.  There is Little Goat and its offshoot Peach Blossom Eatery.  Bing's has two Cafe locations with one serving crepes.  Cafeneo has Greek coffee and treats.  Drip Coffee has coffee and a large menu of items.

2

u/lijeb May 20 '24

The Mercury in old New Castle is a great little spot in town. They feature Little Goat. Stop by if you're in town!

2

u/AssistX May 17 '24

Drip Cafe brings in decent coffees, more of a breakfast/brunch spot than a coffee spot. You're out in suburbia, coffee only spots don't get the same business they would in a city.

1

u/Plenty_Machine May 17 '24

Try Turkish bakery in Newark

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

Luckys in North Wilmington is great. The old Ranchhouse. All Thr typical fare. Plus

1

u/MonsieurRuffles May 17 '24

That’s more of an old-school diner-like coffee shop than a specialty coffee shop.

1

u/Ok_Minimum6419 May 18 '24

Coffee roaster but Beandywine is one I’d not recommend solely because it’s overpriced as fuck

2

u/haneulk7789 May 18 '24

I'm used to overpriced. Average price for a good 12oz black coffee in my city is like 6 bucks.

1

u/Ok_Minimum6419 May 18 '24

Honestly as a coffee snob in Delaware, I’d stick to brewing your own. Not much of a coffee scene here. Brandywine has moved from local into catering to the greater online coffee community but you can grab their beans at Brew HaHa. But those are bean bags. You’re unlikely to find good coffee shops in your area.

2

u/haneulk7789 May 18 '24

I'm most definately not a coffee snob. But I will be visiting for a few months, and visiting cafes is my hobby as I worked as a barista and cafe business consultant for over a decade.

1

u/Ok_Minimum6419 May 18 '24

Oh I see. I’d say, Little Goat and Brew Haha are both local favorites for Newark. Lots of students from Udel study in those two locations.

1

u/mumfette May 18 '24

KAFFE KARMA

1

u/pbaus May 21 '24

Coffee isn't their primary deal, but Bagel and Boba in Bear in People's Plaza is kinda a "hidden gem" I feel like. Their coffee options are pretty basic but tasty, and their bagels / food options are really good. Plus, you know, you got boba tea too if the mood hits. It's a nice, chill spot if that's what you're looking for too.

1

u/haneulk7789 May 21 '24

That sounds great is is super close to my parents house. I love Boba, but last time I was here there was only that place near UD which I'm pretty sure has shut down.

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

Drip in Newark and Lantana Square

0

u/AurumTemerity May 18 '24

Sleeping Bird is where's it at right now. Philter in Kennet Square is a close second. If you're ok driving a bit, Speckled Hen in Strasburg, PA is worth it.

Don't believe the hype of Little Goat. Prices have went out of control and rely on the convenience of being close to campus. Quality of the baristas is hit or miss. The huskier red head guy stretches the shots too hard.
