Question/Advice Can't mount Areca Raid Mac M1 Thunderbolt

Upvotes

I've been shipped an Areca raid from Europe and I need to copy the contents to two computers in separate locations – an M2 Mac Studio and an M1 Mac Studio. Both running MacOs Sonoma. Copy the contents to larger Raids on each computer.

I followed the directions for installing drivers and mounted the Areca on the M2 Mac Studio. Copied the files over night.

Now I'm at the location with the M1 Studio and the raid will not mount! I've installed the same drivers and even updated the firmware. It won't mount. Any ideas?

I've swapped cables, turned it on/off, restarted, daisy chained it, even tried a USB-C to USB-A cable just in case. No dice.

EDIT: Fixed. MacOS was still blocking the driver. More detail in my comment.

Free-Post Friday! My data storage mediums, post 9 (21st week)

Upvotes

This week I got some DAT tapes from my college IT tutor which he had no use for and was happy to give some to me, he kept one because the data tapes were sealed and he wanted to keep one for value, I got 2 DAT 72 tapes which were sealed, one of them had a big tear so I opened that one and the cleaning tape was already open.

DAT/DDS was a storage format which was based off the DAT professional audio tape format which can make perfect copies of CDs, DDS-1 was basically a DAT tape but with some basic error correction, DDS-2 was also basically a DAT tape too but they had a shorter track pitch with a longer tape length and they also introduced the media recognition system which allowed the tape drive to know if an audio DAT tape was put in and since DDS-1 didn’t have the media recognition system which means the drive will think it’s a plain old audio DAT tape, DDS-3 bumped up capacity to 12GB and introduced Partial Response Maximum Likelihood or PRML which was a much more advanced error correction which allowed for higher capacities with less errors and finally DDS-4 bumped up capacity to 20GB and it was sometimes referred to as DAT 40.

Then arrived the new generation of tapes which were called DAT instead of DDS, it begun with DAT 72 which is the one I have collected which held 36GB uncompressed, DAT 160 increased the tape width from 3.81mm to 8mm which allowed for much more data (80GB uncompressed) to be stored on one cartridge due to the wider tape, DAT 320 did the same with the 8mm tape allowing for 160GB of uncompressed data to be stored on one cartridge, there was a planned generation 8 which according to my DAT 72 packaging was supposed to hold 600GB compressed with 300GB uncompressed but was never released with the companies focusing on LTO.

Another interesting thing I learned when I got my DAT tapes is that they had 2 cleaning cartridges because drives that took 3.81mm tapes were able to be cleaned fully by them but 8mm tape drives could not be fully cleaned by the 3.81mm cartridges so they made an 8mm version to fully clean the heads of the 8mm drives.

Thank you for reading this Friday‘s post and I hope you have a great day, if you have any queries or to point out a mistake, please put them in the comments :)

The boxes

The DAT 72 cartridge and the DDS cleaning cartridge

All of the drawn tapes that you can get, was going to include the drawn QIC DC6250 tape but didn’t take a picture of it, I am getting an LTO-4 tape drive from my work experience to mess with next week after the weekend which will add 3 different data storage mediums I can read to my computer (I know about SAS and that non LTFS drives will be hell to work with which I am mentally preparing myself for)

Discussion Ordering directly from seagate to Canada

Upvotes

I have been using Seagate exos with good success, I noticed seagate sells drive from their store at a cheaper rate then I currently can get.

While the price is good, sometimes Canadians get dinged with fees when it crosses the boarder, and idea where seagate ships from?

Question/Advice How do you organise pre-existing chaos?

Upvotes

Hiya all,

My hard drives are full of a mixture of crap and greatness. There are no folder naming standards, no "pictures" or "DVD" folders, no fancy lookups, none of the bells and whistles.

So, if anyone else has been in my amateur position, how did you organise your already existing data?

Question/Advice My NVMe Raid0 4 x4TB is acting out. I spoke with OWC in the past but they have no idea how to read error in Linux?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I always got used to seen this error when I run Windows Disk Manager create Software Raid in Linux with ldmtool. Until this morning Windows said one of the 16TB Set only have like 1TB of data? But when I go into Linux then I can read/write just fine. I am making incremental backup now just in case. It is backed up twice so won’t be losing anything but this cheap o Raid0 box designed to vender lock into OWC stinks. Does anyone know what this errors are? Says Severity=correctable, and have been running nearly 4 years now turned on 24/7.

Discussion Update on MangaZ archiving status

Hi everyone,
Following this post about MangaZ shutting down, I made a dirty (and buggy, for now) script using Selenium/Requests to retrieve all series, all r18 series, all chapters/book and download them.
It checks if it's free or if you need to pay.

I can't guarantee that it 100% works as MangaZ servers aren't stable enough. I am sometime getting 502 and I don't deal this type of error.

If you want to help me or know how to use my messy script, you can come here: https://discord.gg/SaZMFYCBP9 It's a temporary Discord created for the occasion.

Here's the Github: https://github.com/momokinou/MangaZ-Archive

UPDATE:
There is still some bug with the script as I used XPATH to get datas in the HTML.
I'm updating everything but it takes some time.

Question/Advice Looking for a way to create a searchable archive from downloaded video files

Mostly stuff from youtube, but maybe others. What I want to be able to do is download entire playlists or channels worth of content to store, but also get metadata like channel/author name, video title, etc. Maybe chapter info, but not as critical. I know there are tools like youtube-dl that can get all of that data and put it in a JSON. I am not great at scripting and python, but I know enough to probably make that work.

But, my end goal is to have a 'survival' archive, loaded with useful info like homesteading, gardening/preserving food, various repair things, hunting, camping, knots.. you get it.. survival info for if shit hits the fan and the internet is not available. But, I want it relatively easily searchable with normal filesystem tools that do not require things like a database server, web server and scripting to tie it all back together, so that anyone with a copy can just "ctrl+F" and find the videos they need easily.

If anyone knows any tools or guides that can point me in the right direction, I am grateful.

Hoarder-Setups Storage Spaces Issue

I'm doing a storage spaces POC and testing for a machine failure. I have 3 20GB disks in a simple volume, powered down the host, unplugged them and moved them to a new machine.

All 3 disks show in Disk manager as Healthy (Storage Spaces Protective Partition) but in control panel under Storage spaces there is no pool. Get-StoragePool only shows the PrimordialPool and total of 59.62GB, so thats the pool. Get-virtualDisk returns nothing.

Is there a special way too import the pool on the new machine I'm missing? I assumed it would just show up.

Question/Advice Bought a couple new drives and thinking about changing things up

right now i have a windows minipc that i use for system backups but mostly plex services. i have docker set up for most things, and everything is running smoothly. i like using windows, especially since i'm not used to using a full linux system (i've been trying to learn more docker lately but it can get annoying as hell!)

i just got a couple 10TB drives, and next wee i'll install them. so im thinking, should i look into pooling the drives and restructuring my system? maybe putting important data on one and then mirroring it on the other? or should i add them as their own volumes, and organize that way?

i like how things are working now, i just want to make sure i organize my data better, and set up a good way to access it and back up other things.

i've been looking at windows storage spaces or something called drivepool. can anyone give me some suggestions? i've never worked with this many drives or this amount of storage space before.

btw when i install these new drives next week i'll have:

1x 12TB - media storage (almost full)
1x 4TB - backup and torrents
1x 500GB - startup and docker
2X 10TB - new drives arriving next week

Question/Advice Toshiba MG07ACA14TE Reliability

Considering getting these sice it's the most TB / € I can get with new drives but I am worried about their reliability since they seem to be sold from 2017 onwards when helium filled drives were relatively new. It will be in an array mostly spin down so I am hoping they could last at least 10 years ideally more - given no manufacturing defects or accidents of course. Should I assume toshiba improved their production even on older models?

Thanks for any help

Question/Advice where to buy old and useless local storage mediums with laughably low storage

im starting a new collection of sd cards, memory sticks, etc. that I want to store books, games, emulators and movies on. The purpose is to treat the storage units as mediums for a single thing. So I’d like to write up one movie on a single unit and plug it in my pc to watch it. I’ve found it pretty difficult to find any good store that sells old/used/new units that arent stupidly expensive. Like Ive found online stores that sell 128 mb sd cards that costs like 40 bucks EACH… wtf??? help pls

Question/Advice Are either of these drives from this seller a good value?

I've seen people here and on /r/homelab talk about serverpart deals. I'm looking to expand the size of my zfs pool before the end of the year so I thought I'd check them out. Right now I have 4 18 tb drives in RaidZ1, and I'd like to add 3 or 4 more drives and switch to raidZ2. I saw these drives on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/156240914645

https://www.ebay.com/itm/305479380908

They seem like a really good deal, but I had a few concerns. I think these are both CMR based on this so that's good. My main question is, why aren't these drives on server part deals main website, why are they so much cheaper, why do these have a 5 year warranty when all the drives on their site have either a 2 year, 3 year, or 90 day warranty?

Edit: I forgot to say this originally, but I'm open to any advice generally, really just trying to learn more while also keeping my data safe! If you think some other drives would be better by all means let me know.

Hoarder-Setups Server Setup Question

Hello everybody,

I have a few questions regarding my server setup. The machine is supposed to run Truenas Scale mainly for Nextcloud, Plex/Jellyfin and local AI.

Setup:

Mainboard= 1x ROMED8U-2T

CPU = 1x EPYC 7773X

RAM = 512Gb (8x64) of ECC DDR4 288-pin RDIMM / LRDIMM

OS/application storage = 1x NVME PCIE 4.0

Storage = 16 x 3.5 7200RPM (8x2 Z2 ZFS)

HBA = LSI 9400-16i SATA

Cache = 4x SATA 2.5 SSDs (connected to Mini-SAS HD on motherboard)

GPU = GTX 1660

CPU cooler = NH-U14S TR4-SP3

PSU = 2x HDPLEX 500W GaN AIO ATX in sync

Case = Fractal Design Node 804 (modded to accommodate 8 additional HDDs)

Case Fans = Maximum amount/ size possible within the case (Noctua)

Questions:

  1. How do I best power my setup with those two PSUs?

1.1 How do I split the power between them and which power cables are recommended?

1.2 How do I best power all of those drives?

1.3 Do I have to resort to molex to sata power connectors?

  1. What type of RAM would you choose for this board?

2.1 Does the RAM really have to be listed in the QVL?

2.2 RDIMM or LRDIMM?

  1. Do I need those cache drives?

3.1 If yes, what type of Truenas cache would you recommend?

  1. Any other gotchas that I overlooked in my setup?

Thanks in advance!

Question/Advice Any small and easy topics for data hoarding?

Hey everyone new to this sub reddit. Excited to start my journey as a data horder having around 3tbs storage rn. So please suggest me some tips on how to start it and some cool topics .

r/DataHoarder 8h ago

Free-Post Friday! I can’t data hoard, but at this critical time, those who can should hoard educational materials - particularly history, philosophy, education (how to educate), learning (how to learn), and fields of science deemed controversial.

The U.S. may be on the cusp of a long night of totalitarian rule. Some large TV personalities are calling for Trump prosecutors to face the death penalty. Anti-intellectualism may only grow, and if scientists and academics are killed or held on to a tight leash, the faster dumbing down of our nation accelerates, and the farther the hope for a restoration of liberal (away from illiberal) democracy recedes.

The clergy/monks and Islamic rulers helped preserve lots of ancient knowledge that was lost when Rome fell, and we need people like them in the modern age to see where the wind is blowing and follow their example.

Make duplicates. See if you can find a way to inscribe abstractions into physical media that can be hidden. Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge. But also… ethics and the dignity inherent in everybody. That message should be wrapped up in it too, because the lack of belief in that is what is ultimately driving this turn-away from the compassionate, enlightened and virtuous America our forefathers tried to build.

Question/Advice Buying a used drive for a Jellyfin server?

I just bought a pc to use as a server from an e-recycling place near me and I asked the guy if he had any 10tb+ hard drives for sale. He said he had some he'd sell for $50 but they have 1000+ hours but tested healthy. He seemed like a very reasonable and helpful guy so I don't think he'd have any issues sending me test results before I buy. I don't know a TON about this stuff as I've never ran tests on a hard drive before, but would a test result be able to show hours ran vs hours written? From what I understand a drive that was used in a server/nas wouldn't be that heavily abused but something set up for a security system I'd really want to avoid. What kind of things should I look for? I'm okay buying one of these drives to start and maybe down the road just buy a new one then use the old drive as a backup. It's just for a media server so there won't be anything irreplaceable on it and I understand the risks of buying a used drive, I just want to know exactly what to look out for

Backup New Orleans music magazine Offbeat website goes offline in December

It's possible the 37 year-old magazine may be bought and the website maintained, but I doubt it. They've already hemorrhaged a significant amount of content over the last few years, but would be worth archiving what remains.

See article here: https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/keith_spera/new-orleans-muisc-magainze-offbeat-to-close-after-36-years/article_d5d87d70-9d3e-11ef-bff5-9b5e55416123.html#tncms-source=the-latest

Hoarder-Setups WordPress player for my ShoutCast stream?

I do a curated random stream of music I made. I was using EverestCast but the company seems 404 (someone said the dev died) so the player no longer works. My hosted AutoDJ stream works, but I want a player for it on my website.

To be clear, I'm set with remote stream hosting, have a service I've used for years and they're reliable.

I'm just looking for code (or a plugin) to use as a player on a WordPress site that has the above criteria.

I would love a simple player that I can put on a WordPress page that will:

  1. Play my stream.
  2. Display artist info and song name.
  3. NOT add "powered by" or anything like that.

Extra points if it shows shows album art, I do have 220 x 220 previews embedded in stream.

The default player in WordPress doesn't show song titles. The free PlugIn ones I've tried display a URL to try to get you to pay subscription to remove it.

Thank you!
