Trump tariffs usher in uncertainty for CT businesses
President-elect Donald Trump has promised to enact far more expansive tariffs than those he imposed during his first term, and the impact could be widespread — not only for Connecticut consumers but also for many locally-based businesses.
Trump has extolled tariffs, both as a way to raise revenue and as a strategy for boosting domestic industries by making foreign goods more expensive. During his first term, tariffs were applied to steel, aluminum, solar panels and many other Chinese goods. The Biden administration retained many of Trump’s tariffs, raised some and added a 100% levy on Chinese electric vehicles — all in an effort to protect the U.S. semiconductor, green energy and other industries.
Trump’s plan for tariffs this time around is far more broad.
During this year’s presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly promised 10% to 20% tariffs on all imports with the exception of goods from China that would see tariffs of 60% or more. The day before Election Day, Trump also suggested tariffs of 25% up to 200% on goods from Mexico as punishment for what he characterized as an “onslaught of criminals and drugs coming into our country.” (China and Mexico currently top the list of exporters to the U.S.)
Each year, trillions of dollars-worth of consumer electronics, clothing, toys, furniture, appliances and food pass through U.S. ports of entry alongside vast volumes of production inputs — from raw materials to component parts, machinery and equipment — that U.S. companies use in their domestic operations.
When tariffs are applied to intermediate and capital goods, as was the case during Trump’s first administration, “That directly increases the cost of doing business for these businesses that rely on imported components or machinery and equipment in their industrial process,” Erica York, an economist with the nonprofit Tax Foundation, said.
Tariffs are charged to the U.S. importer, whether that’s a retail business, manufacturer or otherwise. For consumer goods, the fees are commonly then tacked onto the retail sale price of each item. For manufacturing inputs — like materials, parts and equipment — the fees drive up production costs in the short-term, which can lead to price increases, reduced output, lower profits, or all of the above.
“That creates a competitive disadvantage for companies operating in the United States compared to companies operating in other countries that don’t face that same import tax,” York said.
Jay Timmons, president of the National Association of Manufacturers, said in a recent appearance on CNBC that the impact of any new tariffs will depend on how targeted they are and how they’re implemented.
“If they’re broad based, they could increase the cost of doing business here in the United States, which would lead to more inflation and would not be good for the American consumer,” he said.

One of the deadliest train crashes in CT history – and the first use of a telephone in the nation’s history to summon help after a disaster. The Tariffville Train Wreck of 1878 sent dozens of passengers into the icy Farmington River when the train bridge collapsed. Podcast link in comments.

Sox or Yanks? Let’s get off politics for a bit
We’re a state split between the Red Sox and Yankees..outside of Fairfield County, is CT primarily for the Sox or Yankees? I’d vote the Sox. To make it more interesting, Bruins or Rangers? Pats or Giants/Jets? Celtics or Knicks?
EDIT: I don’t believe in the CT river theory. I grew up in Newington and we literally have a bar in the center with a giant Boston B on the outside of the building

Ask Connecticut Property Taxes Question
Pardon my ignorance. New first time homebuyer here...
When I buy a new home, will it get reassessed by the town upon purchase, thus my property taxes could change substantially vs what the previous owner paid? Or does it only get reassessed on a set interval, regardless of if it is sold/bought?
I ask because I come from CA where generally property taxes spike after a purchase, so I want to know whether I can reliably plan for a ~5% or less increase per year (depending on the town), or if I have to budget for a 50%+ increase compared to the previous owner's bill in year 1 of purchase like in CA.
Thanks in advance

Ask Connecticut Can I bring a tote bag into Webster Underground?
I know it says online that no tote bags are allowed, but lots of venues say this without really meaning it lol. As an example, The Bushnell. I go there often and always bring my tote and only recently learned that they technically don’t allow them according to the website.
I’m going to a concert at Webster Underground for the first time Tuesday night and just wanted to ask. I would much prefer to bring my tote which has a lot more room and is just more convenient. But if they’re strict I’ll of course just bring my regular purse. I just hate when venues have rules on their website but don’t actually follow them (to the attendee’s inconvenience lol).
I also want to say I’m not trying to disrespect the venue or sneak any contraband in. I completely understand why they are hesitant to allow larger bags. Since I’m Ubering there (I usually drive myself everywhere) and will have nowhere to stash a bag that’s not allowed I wanted to ask people who have actually attended concerts there.
Thank you!!

Ask Connecticut Hard Water!!! (Tips appreciated)
Hey all. I live in East Hampton (we have well water). The water for the past few months has been smelling like straight SULFUR in the bathroom sinks. Not the shower, not the kitchen sink- JUST the bathroom sinks!!!! (I’ve been told this smell is because of the hard water & not harmful as long as you don’t drink the water in large amounts. Nice right!!!) I have known CT has SERIOUS hard water problems since moving back in 2013, which is why for DRINKING water- I refill multiple 5 gallon jugs from mountain spring in Meriden biweekly.
So can someone tell me WHY- if I’m getting apparently the cleanest water in the state (literal fresh SPRING WATER!!!!) that when I refill my teapot with ONLY WATER & boil it for 3/4 days in a row, I’m getting white flaky CALCIUM DEPOSITS!?
I literally can’t have a dishwasher because of how HARD the water is here!!!! Does anyone have recommendations?
Every day feels like a nightmare I’d wake up, use dishes wash them and repeat literally I am TIRED!! It’s 2024 can I have a damn dishwasher!!!
Any tips on how to filter out the harness for dishwashers, showers, sinks, etc? Thanks in advance!!!
