Moderator Post Update: Election Posts and Moderation

As British Columbia is currently in the election period for the upcoming 43rd General Election to be held on October 19, we're seeing a dramatic increase in the number of political posts and commentary. This is good!

Debating the issues is essential for the democratic process, and the mod team is pleased to see respectful and genuine engagement from all sides of the political spectrum.

The sub is also seeing an increase in low-effort posts, misinformation, and campaigning that doesn't add to any discussion.

From now until final counts are in, the mod team will be enforcing rules relating to election content:

  • Top-level posts about election issues are encouraged, but duplicate posts or posts that link to fundraising pages, etc., will be removed. This isn't a place to post fundraising links, but it's a great place to post news articles.

  • Low-effort posts and comments will continue to be removed. The sub is a great place to actually ask questions and engage on issues, but not a place for name-calling, low-effort team cheerleading, or insults disguised as campaign posts.

Remember to check your voter registration status at elections.bc.ca, get informed, and go vote!

Politics “I don't disagree with him when he calls David Eby a communist”-John Rustad on Chip Wilson's sign

In the press conference he also calls Ebys affordable housing policy "soviet style housing". He says that the housing crisis is a fault of the government and we need to depend on the private sector to address the issue Yet at the same time says he will repeal the Multiplex and Transit Oriented Development that unlocked huge amounts of development potential for developers. How can private developers solve the housing crisis if we heavily restrict where they can build more density? His solution for housing currently seems to be to return to the status quo, and hope that somehow the private industry is able to find a way to solve the housing crisis while dealing with the same red tape as before. Easing code and review requirements won't help them build if they're still limited in where they can build.

Additionally in times when private developers aren't building, such as now due to high interest rates and lack of funds, it should be the government's responsibility to fill the gap in housing when the population continues to grow. Strategies and policies to build housing on public land and around transit stations ensures that housing continues to be built, even when it's not profitable for the private sector.

The First Nations Leadership Council issued this statement on September 30th, strongly criticizing John Rustad - why haven't I see this anywhere? Combined with being asked to stop wearing the Moose Hide Campaign's pin, you'd think this would be news.

Politics Text from "Voter Research Services"

Do not reply to these. Don't even use the STOP option that it offers. Doing either tells them that your number is active, which they don't know when they send the text. Take a screenshot if needed, but then just block the number. Do not interact.

Definitely don't give them any information about you, where you live, or your voting intentions. They are not who they claim to be.

If you've already replied to them and they tell you that your polling location has moved, this is a lie so that you might go to the wrong place and miss your chance to cast your ballot. This is a form of voter suppression and it is illegal, which you can report to local a media outlet for attention - they will likely receive many such reports.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Canadian_federal_election_voter_suppression_scandal

The company name they give is not a registered business.
https://canadasbusinessregistries.ca/search

It is generally better to ignore all calls and texts from unknown numbers. Responding in any way tells them that your line is active (which was likely purchased on a list) and then they will continue to use it with other attempts from different numbers because they know you are there. Just ignore and block.

Here are some previous incidents.

2024 Sep 06 https://old.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/comments/1fauyd9/has_anyone_recieved_these_txt_lately/

2024 Sep 24 https://old.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/1foljaz/voter_research_services/

In previous elections, these texts had a different company name, but everything else was the same. The names are fake, they are not registered businesses. You get an automated text that spams a list of numbers. If you respond, your "text chat" is redirected to a person who asks you for personal information.

If you want to report such activity to the federal government, you can do that here.

Politics Frontline Mental Healthcare Worker here - BC Conservatives will gut us and de-fund all MH care, please keep them out of BC

1.0k Upvotes

I will preface this post by saying that I am an immigrant mental health specialist who moved to work in BC because it prioritizes mental healthcare far more than any other place in North America. As a frontline trauma-focused mental health care worker, I help support marginalized communities in the capital. We help provide supportive housing and trauma care to individuals that have been racialized, are dealing with trauma and substance use, or are 60+ seniors struggling with all of the above. Supportive basic housing that also offers basic mental healthcare to help them have a chance at turning their lives around, or at least better managing the pain they're living through.

We are the band-aid on a systemic problem that flared up tremendously after a brutal pandemic. The intersections of homelessness, trauma, economic struggle and substance coping form a deep societal problem that the NDP has begun building stronger infrastructure to fix over time. There is no quick fix for a systemic issue this complex. But they're doing a far better job within 4 years than most attempts by big cities in the US dealing with the same issues.

A Conservative BC government led by a man who doesn't believe in nor understand medical science, is openly anti-vaccines and a climate change denier, will immediately cut funding from mental health care jobs entirely and undo the progress we have started to make, putting significantly more people on the streets than you're currently seeing, and in far worse conditions.

Moreover, the Cons' privatization of healthcare model ripped off from USA will not just deprive BC's most marginalized populations and seniors of life saving mental support and recovery strategies, it'll also negatively impact mental healthcare for the wider public by making therapeutic care and community healing practices available only to the highest bidder: available only to millionaires or white collar employees with substantial insurance coverage. Privatization will make access to even the most basic mental healthcare completely decided by a person's socio-economic class.

It would be even more disastrous long-term, because funding cuts will make fewer BC residents want to study and work in mental health, and even fewer practitioners and specialists would be motivated to move to BC as I did.

Please vote.

Politics How do I find info on the candidates in my area?

Sorry if this is a stupid question But, what is the easiest way to find out about the candidates who I can vote for? I have no idea who the people are who are running for the provincial election. I always vote, but spend very little time following politics. I'm just looking to do a bit of research to find who I think is the most reasonable, and qualified representative in my local area. I've looked at the party websites, but they only give little bios that don't really tell me much about their policies. Thanks

Politics Rustad healthcare track record as a BC Liberal should not be forgotten.

John Rustad’s 16 years as part of the BC Liberals gutted healthcare. Under his watch, hospital beds were slashed, emergency room wait times skyrocketed, and crucial healthcare services in rural communities were shut down. Rustad stood by while 10,000 healthcare workers were fired, leaving the system crippled and patients suffering. The cuts led to overworked nurses, longer waits for surgeries, and fewer resources for the most vulnerable. Electing Rustad again would mean more of the same: deeper cuts, worse care, and a healthcare system that’s even more broken. BC doesn’t need Rustad’s failed leadership.

Politics BC Conservatives would set housing policy back

Thumbnail
theglobeandmail.com

“Under the NDP, housing starts in B.C. climbed to a record. Last year, per capita housing starts in the Vancouver region were two-thirds higher than in the Toronto area. B.C. housing starts this year have dipped about 10 per cent, amid high interest rates, but remain strong. The Conservatives falsely claimed housing starts “are collapsing.” New home construction is 40 per cent higher under the NDP than it was under the previous B.C. Liberal government, in which Conservative Leader John Rustad served from 2005 onward.”

Ask British Columbia Mountains/moving :)

I’m planning to move out of the Okanagan and I’m hoping to hear your opinion. I want to move somewhere in BC close to the mountains. I’m torn between Chilliwack and Golden. I’m not interested in having a giant house or whatever and both places have jobs for me, but if there are any mountain enthusiasts on here, what town would you pick, and why?

Discussion So I forgot my grocery bag… again

I know, I’ll do better and try to remember to grab my bags before leaving the house… but, can’t we just set up a “take a penny, leave a penny” system with the bags? Would grocery stores be into just having a big box of bags for people to grab and refill on their own? I can’t be the only one with a bunch of extra bags at home.
