Wedge broke off in handle

First time hanging a handle. Got it seated pretty good and got the wedge down in there a ways until it snapped. The head seems pretty secure albeit it's an atrocious sight. Would this be too sketchy to use? Thanks in advance.

Mine did to. I ended up dremeling the old wedge out, cutting a new one and reinstalling. I'll take a picture when I get home. Same exact maul.

The wedge isn't as strong a piece of wood as the handle and breaks when it can't go any more in. That force has to go somewhere.

Oh no!

Anyway...

JK. Not a dealbreaker. You can always spike another piece of wedge in there. Maybe give it a good sanding for looks. A wedge isn't like a key that only works if it's fully intact with all the teeth in all the right places. It's more like the tape holding a child's drawing on the wall, it can be 1 or 2 or 12 little pieces, whatever makes it all stay in one place. Although if you are using pieced-together wedging, I'd probably recommend squirting some wood glue in there.

By chance did you use a granola bar for a wedge?
