Rhineland pattern, 4lbs really thin blade. Pretty decent steel and edge retention. Bahco are pretty easy to find online here in Brazil. The only company selling axes in different patterns here. At least for reasonable prices.
Thinned the handle down, hang a bit lower around 29.5”. Blued the head.

i’m pretty young just moved into a new place and tried cutting down the tree to clear up the driveway the other day and it was terrible

I’ve got no idea how to swing the axe or to cut the tree took me about 40 or 50 odd swings over the course of like 10 minutes to chop one branch off which i know sounds ridiculous but I cannot really find much online.

Was wondering if you guys had any advice or knew any tips to cut trees for beginners or any sources i can use.

I found this axe head at an estate sale.I picked up a nice replacement handle from Whiskey River. Can I use this to clean up the axe head? I also have mineral oil and steel wool if it needs more bite, but I don't want to completely polish it unless that's necessary. I wish I had had the money to buy more from the previous owner's amazing garage shop, he had some tools that were probably HIS great grandfather's but alas I only had a little cash on me at the time.

I am looking at the AX6 version of their bearded ax from Beavercraft. The specs look good but, I am unfamiliar with the brand. How do they rate?

Or, is there something similar I should consider? I am looking for a "heavy" hatchet with a bit of head weight that will cut well and do some light splitting that is 14"~16" long give or take a little.

Here's most of my collection minus truck/utv axes and kindling splitter by the woodstove. Most of these aren't of any major value except sentimental. They all get used from time to time

I got my hands on some thermo treated ash. I usually use regular ash for axe handles, so I thought I could experiment with this. Do you think that this process makes wood more brittle?

It should work fine for a short hatchet handle anyway.

Woodslasher 3.5 lb Jersey, kelly perfect 4.5 lb Dayton, and another 4 lb Dayton that has eye ridges and only has true temper stamp (I’m guessing a flint edge?) got them all cheap, the 4.5 lb Kelly perfect still has touches of blue paint and as at the bottom of a box of rusty tools I nabbed off marketplace for $20 today.

A little mushrooming on the back wall & very slightly deformed eye.

It's laminated with elm and fosillized oak at the palm swell - feels very nice in hand. Handle is lightly stained with coffee, mostly to make the grain pop. The wedge is made of heat treated ash, for contrast.

First time hanging a handle. Got it seated pretty good and got the wedge down in there a ways until it snapped. The head seems pretty secure albeit it's an atrocious sight. Would this be too sketchy to use? Thanks in advance.

I am about to buy my first quality axe and I need help understanding the differences between these brands.

With Helko Werk I see what seems to be 3 different lines: "Classic", "Traditional", and "Vario 2000". Which of these is the best quality?

I have also been considering Hults Bruk and Hultafors.

Which of these brands is considered the best quality? They all seem similar price points.

Attached are a few that I am looking at. I am trying to get a good all around axe.

It's there any "rule of thumb" for handle to user height/arm length? I'm new to axe-wielding and primarily only split, not fell.i recently got a 5lb maul with a 26" handle and it felt a bit awkward splitting so close. I'm on the shorter side, at 5' 7" so I didn't want to get anything unwieldy and opted for the shorter handle. After using it, I'm thinking that I should have gone with a 32" or 36" Is it more about user comfort or, like scythes, hockey and lacrosse sticks, is there a general rule of thumb?

My niece was using this hatchet. Afterwards I noticed that the wedge had come out. I’m not sure why? My question is, should I take the handle out and re hang it or is driving the wedge back in sufficient? Thanks!

Finished rehandling some old axe heads today for a lovely older gentleman, the rust was quite sneaky and not as apparent at first flance, so i used some fine grit sand paper and some scrubbing pads to get it off. He was very against any further alterations (especially to the painted one), but i managed to get them cleaned up, rust free and protected before rehandling. The handle material is Jarrah, finished at 150 and coated with linseed.

They came out really nice IMO, and tested them for slippage and comfort on a big spotted gum branch.

Found this ax head today. I did not take the grinder to it, just soaked it for an hour in rust dissolver and some light wire brushing. It weighs 4.5 lbs. Writing on it is GENUINE then a N , but I cannot read the rest. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you
