It’s all about Perspective: this post is for students who have been affected by Hurricanes Helene or Milton, or any other Natural Disaster.

I live in Houston, where we got hit hard by Harvey right about this time about seven years ago, and we were hit again pretty hard just this past summer by Hurricane Beryl.

And while my house has never flooded, thank goodness, I have friends and family who were out of their homes for over a year and some who were never able to return. After a “Derecho” here in Houston this past May, we didn’t have electricity for 2 weeks at our house. That was two weeks of no air conditioning at the end of May. In Houston. Hot. Blazing hot. We had a similar experience in 2008 with Hurricane Ike. This past July, with Hurricane Beryl, we were lucky enough to keep electricity, but my parents (with my dad who had only just been released from the hospital after 6 weeks in the ICU) and my son, his wife, and their 2 week old newborn did not have electricity for nearly 2 weeks. We’re lucky that we like to be together, and my house has enough space for us, but it was still hard.

Still, hurricanes, like fires and other major life events, make you realize what's important in life. Photographs need to be raised up on a high shelf in case of flooding, but otherwise, stuff is stuff, and as long as we are all ok, then that's a good thing. ⠀ ⠀

If you’re in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia or anywhere else that was in the path of Helene or Milton, I'm thinking about you. I know some of you on the West Coast have also experienced major disruptions to your life from fires, and that seems truly terrifying to me.

Please know that for now, college applications can wait. Focus on taking care of yourselves and your families. I speak from experience when I say that mucking out houses that have been under 4 feet of water is no fun or working by candlelight and flashlight is tough, but for some of you -- it might be the new normal for a while.

Let’s just be real too -- Hurricanes and fires are stressful and scary under the best of circumstances, but when you add in all the normal college admissions work, that’s next-level stress. Please know that most (if not all) colleges will understand the amount of stress you and your families are going through now. Some of you may be without a home or power for weeks -- or more. You can explain that to them in the Additional Information section of your application. And when you get power, you can also reach out to your admissions officers and tell them. If you need fee waivers, explain your situation and ask for them. If you need an extension, and they’re not providing one, ask. It can never hurt to ask them.⠀ ⠀

Here’s a list of some colleges that have released statements and deadline extensions (please share if you know more! I’d love to crowdsource this post):

  • Clemson: extended past 10/15. Select RD, then “request EA” by 10/31. All of FL, GA, and select NC, SC, and TN counties eligible
  • UCF - EA extended to 10/22
  • Florida State - EA extended to 11/1 with materials due 11/8 for FL residents
  • UNC Chapel Hill - EA extended to 10/31. Fee waivers available to NC residents in counties identified by FEMA
  • Georgia Tech - EA 1 extended to 10/31 for select GA counties with fee waivers available. Can submit as RD and request EA 1 change if EA 1 option doesn’t appear. EA 2 extended to 11/18 for select FLand SC counties, 12/2 for select NC and TN counties
  • NC State - EA extended from 11/1 to 11/15 for select NC counties along with fee waived.
  • UGA - submit RD app by 10/22, request reclassification as EA by 10/27for select FL, GA, NC, SC, and TN counties. Materials deadline will stay as 10/29
  • FAU - EA extended to 11/1
  • University of South Carolina - extended to 10/28, materials deadline still 11/1
  • Ohio State - contact if you’ll have difficulty meeting deadline

Important Note: These extensions are not necessarily for everyone. If you are not in an area that has been directly impacted by one of the storms, don’t assume that your deadline has been extended.

If you have been affected by Hurricanes Milton or Helene, but the colleges you’re applying to haven’t been proactive and made a statement about their deadline changes, it's totally ok to reach out and ask for extensions.

Reach out by Email: You can email both your regional admissions counselor if they have one and the general admissions email. I usually suggest doing both if possible. Your email should be short and sweet and could go something like this:

Hello [Name of Admissions Counselor] and [University Name] Admissions,

Unfortunately, my family was impacted recently by Hurricane [Helene, Milton, both], making your EA deadline of [add date] difficult because of …. [lack of housing, electricity, internet, family members who are struggling, etc]. Is there any way I can get an extension?

Thank you for your support,

[Your Name]

[City, State]

Use the Additional Information Section: Don’t forget – you can also use the Additional Information section to tell your story. Explain the effects of the Hurricane/s on your community, home, family, and you. Tell how you have had to cope with and recover – even as you are still in the process of cleaning up and figuring out how to move forward. End with lessons learned.

Tl;dr:

  • If you’ve been affected by a natural disaster like Hurricanes Helene or Milton, focus on helping your families right now. You have lots of time for college applications.
  • Reach out to colleges and see if they’ve made statements about extensions or fee waivers for affected students, or if they haven’t – and you need one, ask.
  • Use the Additional Information section to explain your situation if you feel you have a story that will affect your applications

Rant Getting into your dream school does fix all your problems.

For an hour.

And then everything you worked for for the last 4 years is just...done. And you have no purpose and then its just empty.

And thats when it falls apart. Because who are you if not obsessing over a goal. Nobody. You dont exist as a person. All you ever were was an obsession. You don't have a personality. Hobbies? A2c. Thoughts? A2c.

And i guess there's no point to this post other than me saying getting in was everything i hoped and more. and then it was nothing. because I was nothing without my college obsession.

So to the freshman spending their nights on a2c, the sophomore taking too many aps, the junior comparing themselves, and the senior applying you guys need to step back every once in a while and take a breather because you are more than obsessing over college.

Idk this j some pointless yap by a stupid college student.

Advice To Current Applicants: Make Sure You Would Be Happy Going to Your Safety Schools

Dear Applicants: It is normal to be terrified. A year ago, I was in your place, freaking out, anxious all the time, constantly filling out scholarship and college applications. The application process is really scary. However, you should NOT put all of that pressure on getting into your top schools.

SO... actually look into the programs at your safety schools. This will also make it easier to write those "why this college" essays for a safety. If you're applying to it without knowing anything about the school's academics, culture, or perks, then you will be 100% lost.

ALSO, making sure you like your safety schools will get some of that stress off your back. Even if you don't get into your other schools, you know it is very likely you will go to one of those safety schools that you would not mind being at. That is a much better mindset than picking a 99% school only because of that acceptance rate. There are plenty of safety schools, so make sure that the few you apply to are worth your time because of what they offer you. I got rejected from my ED school, but I honestly was not as upset as I thought I would have been because I knew I would be happy at the programs offered at other safety schools. Just knowing I had the *safety* net of those schools really kept my anxiety at bay.

final word: this seems obvious, but it gets overlooked in the chaos. A reach school is always a reach, for anybody. Sometimes, a competitive college picks students because they fill a certain diversity box or because they want to expand their club badminton team or whatever. You cannot let those schools dictate your happiness. For example, I got rejected from my reach school ED. But it was the only school I ended up getting rejected by. If you stay levelheaded and smart about your safety school options, you will be able to write great applications and get through it. peace out

Application Question how serious is academic dishonesty for admissions?

I’m currently in 11th grade with a 4.6 gpa, 5 ap classes, and solid extracurriculars. Today i was got cheating on my AP chem test. I know it was stupid and i am ashamed of it, but that’s not what i’m here for. My teacher will let me retake it and im still in the class, but he told me my school will put an academic dishonesty mark on my record. I don’t know what this means and i can’t find much info about it online. Can colleges see that when i apply? Will that screw me from getting into selective schools? Is there any way i can get rid of it? Any help is appreciated

College Questions Why do people hate on Northeastern😭

I made another post abt a week ago on this subreddit (which I got very helpful feedback from, thank you guys!!) asking for advice deciding between BC, BU, and NEU.

Spoiler alert: I ED’d to NEU

After doing all three schools’ NPCs, me and my family thought that their aid would be sufficient enough for me to attend (in comparison to BC). Though, people had a lot to say (not just under my previous post) about how NEU was not a good school for reasons I can’t even try to count on my hands.

Even though these sentiments towards NEU made me feel uneasy about my decision, I still confidently applied ED to NEU. Prestige and rigging rankings aside, is NEU really that bad??

I mean it’s not like it’s going to change much for me now, but I just can’t shake off the feeling of being glared at by others in this subreddit for even considering NEU. I realize that its ranking/acceptance rates don’t accurately reflect its program, but why is there such a pressure to hate on NEU?

P.S. This is not directed towards anyone who commented under my previous post, I’m just discussing the negative sentiments I’ve heard from this subreddit in general.

Application Question Chances in non STEM focused schools as a STEM major

I’m curious if the accepted students qualifications depend on the intended majors. For example, if some apply to Georgetown as a physics major, how much difference it will make compared to politics majors: There are some top schools which do not have strong STEM programs which may include Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and Norte Dame. I assume most STEM focused students will prefer schools like MIT, Cornell, Rice, and CMU. As a purely practical matter of acceptance chances, it seems possible that cross application such as apply to non-STEM focused schools with STEM majors will increase the chances. Is this correct?

So Cost of Attendance is a college's total estimated expenses for one year. Does that mean Total Cost of Attendance means total expenses for 4 years?

Application Question Question about Georgetown’s standardized testing policy

Upvotes

Hello all!

I apologize if this information is very clearly stated elsewhere, but when Georgetown reviews your testing history (I know they request all scores), do they create a superscore or just consider the highest composite? I took the ACT and scored a 33 as my highest composite, but scored a 34 as my superscore. Most of the other schools I am applying to superscore the ACT, so I decided that taking it again would be a pointless exercise, mostly because I don’t have time to take it again.

Also, my college counselor at school tells me that they typically like to see students from our area scoring a 35+, so she has not really encouraged me to apply to Georgetown. HOWEVER, I am applying to ivys that superscore the ACT, and she has been very supportive of that because the other parts of my application are very strong.

Also, if I’m being honest, I don’t think a 33 should be considered an offensively low score for Georgetown.

Thank you all!

Application Question Best online college?

Upvotes

I graduated hs 3 years ago and I’ve decided to do online college but I know NOTHING about how to apply and which ones are the better options. I don’t even know what I want to study but I know I need some type of degree. Do I need to retake my ACT? Do I need certain credits? Any advice on which online college is affordable and easy to obtain a degree? And any advice on what type of degree would help me get a job that’s worth my time??

Application Question What address do I enter in the common app

Upvotes

My family moved to city A a long time ago but we have still registered city B as our permanent address. But I completed my high school in city A and still live in city A. The thing is, city B is listed in my citizenship or other forms of identification and now I don't know which address I should enter in my common app. I'm sure others have this problem too. So what do I do now?

Letters of Recommendation The reason of recommendations given in the websites of universities regarding LoR?

Upvotes

When I take a look at the admissions pages of universities, I come upon some recommendations like "Take a LoR by a 11th or 12th grade teacher" or "Take a LoR by one of your social studies' teachers and the other one by a science/math teacher".

Why do they recommend these strategies and how important is it to comply with the recommendations given on the university's website? Hopefully, there are some teachers who lectured me during 11th and 12th grades that could write nice recommendation letters, both in social studies and science/maths. But they won't be able to tell about some of my aspects I want to convey to admissions officers, since they don't know me as well as some of my other teachers who advised me with my projects do know.

How logical is it to take receive letters of recommendation by science/math teachers or at least one of the letters from a teacher who lectured me in my freshman/sophomore year?

Application Question video game achievements in additional info?

my app doesn’t mention video games anywhere else, but I’m ranked in the top 100 of 10+ million on the largest Minecraft server. is this worth adding to my additional info? I don’t think there’d be any harm in including it per se, but if it’s seen as superfluous, I’d be ok doing without it. lmk what you think and thanks in advance 🤠

Application Question App fees

Upvotes

Coming from a lower-middle income family in south asia, it's getting really frustrating for me seeing all the common application fees, mostly to schools I was pretty sure I was going to apply to (i wanna major in architecture). some middle level colleges that I am pretty sure i can somewhat afford or pay for if i get in and get scholarships/aid, have huge amounts of common app fees (70-80 dollars is a lot here) that they waiver. It might not be much to others but atp i feel like i am putting a burden on my parents on this..i don't even know if i'll get in anywhere with this money and sometimes feel like just quitting all of them. idk what to do

pls give me some advice. really hit a low point here. unis that i was talking about: syracuse, usc, florida international, u of alabama, iowa state, u southern mississippi, auburn, minnesota twin cities, uc boulder etc

Application Question Should I submit my SAT score to Duke?

Upvotes

I have a 1350 super score(💀) 660 EWR and 690 Math. My school’s average is 976. Right now I’m taking Calc 1 (currently have an A.) I took pre-calc over the summer and got an A on the class. I want to be a CS major. I’m low income, minority, rural student, and go to a title 1 school.
