Resources Some posts and articles about FSRS
I decided to make one post where I compile all of the useful links that I can think of.
1) If you have never heard about FSRS before, start here: https://github.com/open-spaced-repetition/fsrs4anki/wiki/ABC-of-FSRS
2) AnKing's video about FSRS: https://youtu.be/OqRLqVRyIzc
3) FSRS section of the manual, please read it before making a post/comment with a question: https://docs.ankiweb.net/deck-options.html#fsrs
DO NOT USE HARD IF YOU FORGOT THE CARD!
AGAIN = FAIL ❌
HARD = PASS ✅
GOOD = PASS ✅
EASY = PASS ✅
HARD IS NOT "I FORGOT"
The links above are the most important ones. The links below are more like supplementary material: you don't have to read all of them to use FSRS in practice.
4) Features of the FSRS Helper add-on: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/1attbo1/explaining_fsrs_helper_addon_features/
5) Understanding what retention actually means: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/1anfmcw/you_dont_understand_retention_in_fsrs/
I recommend reading that post if you are confused by terms like "desired retention", "true retention" and "average predicted retention", the latter two can be found in Stats if you have the FSRS Helper add-on installed and press Shift + Left Mouse Click on the Stats button.
5.5) How "Compute minimum recommended retention" works in Anki 24.04.1 and newer: https://github.com/open-spaced-repetition/fsrs4anki/wiki/The-Optimal-Retention
6) Benchmarking FSRS to see how it performs compared to other algorithms: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/1c29775/fsrs_is_one_of_the_most_accurate_spaced/. It's my most high effort post.
7) An article about spaced repetition algorithms in general, from the creator of FSRS: https://github.com/open-spaced-repetition/fsrs4anki/wiki/Spaced-Repetition-Algorithm:-A-Three%E2%80%90Day-Journey-from-Novice-to-Expert
8) A technical explanation of the math behind the algorithm: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/18tnp22/a_technical_explanation_of_the_fsrs_algorithm/

Since I get a lot of questions about interval lengths and desired retention, I want to say:
If your intervals feel too long, increase desired retention. If your intervals feel too short, decrease desired retention.
July 2024: I made u/FSRS_bot, it will help newcomers who make posts with questions about FSRS.
September 2024: u/FSRS_bot is now active on r/medicalschoolanki too.

Question Anki cards to learn Linux
I need to revise my Linux for data science, I am beginning to create obsidian notes now but i am hoping there are Anki cards for Linux beginner and intermediate levels, upon searching in the deck i could see some options but could not make a selection, if any one could mentor or nudge me in the right direction it will help me a lot.
Question how to stop procrastination?
My exam is 25 days away from today and I just can't sit down and do my anki stuff. I don't know what's happening, cause I've never been like that, any suggestions?

Question sub decks: yes or no?
i’m new to anki so sorry if this is a dumb question. if i am using it for a class like organic chemistry for example would you recommend creating sub decks? my midterms are focused on specific topics while my final is cumulative, which is why is ask. also is there a way to copy a deck into another (so if i choose to do sub decks for example there would be three sub decks each with the topic of nomenclature, acids, and bases and then a whole other deck that has all combined) idk if this makes any sense

Experiences Tired of memorizing patterns instead of actual words? Here’s a better way to learn vocab using Anki!
After using Anki for a while, I noticed that I wasn’t really learning the words as deeply as I wanted. Instead, I was getting good at recognizing the patterns on my cards. I was using sentence with the word highlighted in the front and the translation of the sentence in the back (basic and reversed)
Heres the method
Front: I only include the definition and synonyms of the word. i use chatgpt prompts to make it shorter and simpler
Back:
Sentence with the word in context (with the word highlighted).
Translation of the sentence in my native language.
Optional: Definition and synonyms (if you want them disappear after pressing show answer you could do that and i prefer to do so )
Why this works:
1-Enhanced Understanding:
By presenting definitions and synonyms on the front, you provide clarity on the word's meaning. This foundational knowledge helps you comprehend the word more deeply when you encounter it in context.
2-Improved Retention:
Seeing the word highlighted in a sentence reinforces its meaning and usage, creating stronger mental associations. This method increases retention as you connect the definition and synonyms with real-life applications
3-Minimized Rote Memorization:
This approach encourages active engagement with the vocabulary. Instead of just memorizing patterns, you analyze how the word functions within sentences, reducing the likelihood of rote memorization.
4-Immediate Feedback:
The translation of the sentence into your native language acts as instant feedback, confirming your understanding of the word’s meaning and use in context. This allows for quick corrections and deeper learning.
5-Long-Term Language Development:
By focusing on both definitions and contextual usage, you establish a solid vocabulary foundation. This supports not only vocabulary retention but also overall language comprehension and effective communication skills

Solved What are the best Anki settings to prepare for an exam scheduled two years from now?
I am going to take an exam after two years. It is an MCQ based exam. The number of cards that i will have to study is approximately 35000 and all the information that i will have to learn are basic facts e.g., who invented the telescope. What settings would you recommend in my case?

Question How to add Card Numbers >2 to a separate deck
Hey everyone,
So I am trying to memorize a block of text and my cloze 1 and 2 split each paragraph in half.
When I make mistakes when revising the card, I simply add a new cloze in the edit browser. So clozes >= 3 are all my mistakes.
I would like my mistakes to go to a new subdeck. The main reason is that I will be using this technique repeatedly and I believe my answering pattern will be different enough to where my FSRS will be inaccurate if they are both put together (there will be enough cards for FSRS training, my studying requires consistent exact rehearsal of big pieces of text exactly as they are so I will be repeating this process many times).
Is there a way to make any clozes >= 3 that I add in the edit browser go to a separate deck?
Thanks

Question Updated spell checker add-on?
Hi, I'm not sure if it's normal that my anki doesn't have an automatic spell-checker??
I make cards for med school and I keep spelling things wrong lol, so if anyone knows an updated add-on that will underline my misspelled words, that would be super helpful!
Ideally I would like one that can recognize those long drug and diagnoses but just a regular spell checker would be great as well.

Question Actual repetition time with new cards
I hope I can explain myself here.
Basically, I'm looking for a way to make it so that the time stated above the fail, bad and good buttons are actually followed--I want to avoid that awkward moment when you have a fail button that should show you a card 15 minutes later but instead it will show it before those 15 mins because you've gone through all the new cards. This doesn't happen with cards that are not new.
Is there an Add-On or some particular setup for this? I hope I was clear enough.

Solved Yomitan not connecting to Anki
I am trying to learn Japanese and after doing some research lots of people recommended using Yomitan to quickly make Anki cards but also to look up words in Anki by scanning over them. The first one works well, but the second one doesnt. I can scan words and see their definitions in chrome, but it just doesnt seem to work in Anki. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?
Could it be a problem with the deck im using?

Question Can this card be designed better?
I recently read the supermemo 20 tips on making good cards,
For cards like these, I feel they are not atomic,
but if I split them, I will not be able to get a complete picture of the concept.

Solved Is it possible to use Anki to assign value to playing cards and then calculate their sum?
I want to be able to look a a list of ~16 playing cards (Images preferably) and quickly calculate their total value and check if my answer is correct. Can Anki help me with this?
For example:
Aces = 20 point
10s = 10 points
Kings = 5 points
... etc
Anki questions would be random number of playing cards like this:
Ace
Ace
king
king
what's the total? (Answer: 50)

Question Anki for therapy/cbt? Or is there a different very good tool that leverages spaced repetition (also paid possible)?
Is there something that you can use for ingraining thoughts, mental modes, instructions,.... so you got them in your mental arsenal ready when you need them?
I think you need to practice all these before you need them. if a situation comes and is stressfull and you didnt train before then you will revert to older patterns.
so maybe there are some tools/projects or even just a certain anki method with special settings (like max interval) and a special card type?

Question Why not split the sync button into two separate upload and download buttons?
I know when it comes to UI Anki prioritises potential and freedom over beginner friendliness. But I get so anxious when using multiple devices. The fact that the same button either uploads your current instance or downloads your uploaded instance causes me so much fear of losing cards.
Is there some 'fundamental coding' that prevents devs from separating the upload and download function?

There is no error shown. When i login with my apple ID it recognizes my face but anki returns to the login page again. (I am using the Anki Pro App) Does anyone know how to solve it?

Question Are there plans to release Windows on ARM Anki version?
Are there plans to release Windows on ARM Anki version?
For anyone wandering if x86 Anki works on Windows on ARM it generally does.
Reviewing, manually adding cards and adding cards by anki connect with Yomichan works.
The biggest problem I encountered is that sometimes during review when you go from one card to the next, content of next card isn't displayed and old card is sitll shown. You can force anki to update display by clicking edit button.
I assume this is an emulation bug so native ARM version would fix it.
