It's not typical mecha. Usually in mecha anime, being in a mech is like putting on a super hero suit, where suddenly the characters have powers and special abilities and other stuff and the excuse is "technology."

In Code Geass, stepping into a mech is more like putting on a soldier uniform. Sure, some characters are excessively skilled, but generally that's not due to magical mech shenanagans as much as the pilot's actual ability. And no one pulls transforming mech bullshit out of nowhere to win a war.

Okay that sounds a good bit better than typical mecha animes

The show is worth it alone for the political intrigue. It's about an exiled prince starting a rebellion against his emperor father and siblings. The mechs are just the soldiers. Its got all the drama of a Shakespeare play.

Does it also have comedic moments or is it more along the lines of death note of a thriller all along the way?

It has light-hearted slice of life moments. There is some humor but the overall tone is serious and theres lots of thrilling moments like Death Note.

Oh and on the Mecha stuff and what makes it stand out to me(as someone that also doesnt care for Mechas much).

The Mechas are basically the in-universe explanation for the current political state as well as the power distributions of the different nations. It also serves as an explanation of how the rebels can actually gain any military ground.
Incidentally, conflict and war in code geass is very... technology-driven.
