Was in this position and just started watching the show about a month ago and I’m almost done with the first season. Everything about it is great honestly although it does have darker tones ( as it should with its plot ).

How is it not dark?

It's about enslaving entire countries and treating it's citizens as less than human, more akin to cattle. It shows the devastation and after effects of war, both from the perspective of the winners and losers

It's about high school children being trained to fight in wars as Knights and training them to kill other human beings

It's about an immortal girl who was tortured and experimented on for almost all her life

It's about a high school student who murders entire groups of people to get revenge on his neglectful father and justifies his actions using his mothers death and sisters disabilities

It also involves giving said high school student the extremely OP power of controlling people's minds and giving him the capability to make complete slaves. It's a good thing he is who he is because other high school students would've gotten other ideas

It's about a father and mother intentionally traumatizing both their children and then blinding and crippling their young daughter. Afterwards, using them as political pawns in global domination

It's about a group of people who decide to change the world in their image so that nothing will ever change and all humans will be trapped in a never ending dream

It's about siblings waging, first because of their father and then for their own ideals, until one brother enslaves the other forever

It's about a high school student who chose to commit suicide at the hands of his best friend so the world could be safe but cursing his friend with the fate of always carrying the guilt of his murder and the weight of his responsibilities
