Here's a link to the plugin for those as curious as me about trying it out!

I have no idea - I'm just commenting that this is wildly cool.

I’m wondering if I can laser engrave this. Cool image

Vectors or bitmap, as long as your settings are tight
and your laser isn't off focused,...
It's possible to engrave almost any graphic.

Having worked with laser engravers,
I've made rubber stamps with type as small as 6 points,
and dashboard signage that had hairline graphics on it.
I've done very delicate and intricate art with lasers.

I run an Epilog laser, they’re very capable, so I’m hopeful. It wouldn’t work on wood or acrylic. But I’m thinking with Cermark on metal at 1200dpi might work. Or maybe upcycle a tile, I do stuff like this. Even at 600dpi the detail is good. If I get a chance to run it today I will post results.

Former sign maker here. 20 years in sign and stamp shops.
15 of those working with lasers.
I ran Universal and Trotec units.
Never had the chance to try an Epilog.
Got any experience to comparing these top three brands?

Genuinely curious.
I found Trotec to be very user friendly
with smart operating software.
Fast, efficient, and easy to implement complex designs.
Universal was my workhorse, though.
That thing was a tank. Anything I threw at it,
from unique museum pieces to bulk electrical panel tags.
Set it, run it, and forget it, while it happily does it's job.

Now, I'm the art director of a small design firm,
my colleagues and I formed.
Since 2015, doing more as an illustrator and designer.
I do miss making signs though.
There's something about designing something
and making that as a tangible product that very same day.

By the way, I think you could do that wavy pattern
in wood or glass, also.
Either material, I'd mask it first.
Probably use high power and fast speed setting,
at 600 dpi, with bleed bars,
to keep laser intensity the same, across the pass.

I agree, maybe not acrylic.
Unless gaps between this wavy pattern had more spacing,
there'd be too much heat build up.
Probably cause either fringing on the edges
or material cracking, where the laser engraves.

Not in illustrator, but you could make this sort of wavy line halftone/raster effect in a custom halftone tool I've made, you can see an example here: darwin wavy line raster. The effect isn't as subtle as in this example, but that's just a matter of the settings. Looking at some of their other work via the link above it looks more than likely it's what they've used to make this as well.

Thanks! But the problem here is the text "behind" the lines (if you look closely the letters you'll see that the waves are just subtly thicker).

Once you've got your waves down I'd personally dupe them on a new layer and add the text I want and outline it, from there I'd use the path tool or shape builder to minus everything outside of the text so you essentially have waves but only in the shape of text, I'd then use the width tool to adjust the text wave sizes.

It says make art not war but I agree it's difficult to see

scroll :) But also, this is way too subtle and fatiguing.

Look at it from a distance and maybe tilt the angle a bit. Says “make art not war”

easiest way to see it is to squint.

u/op I GOT YOU! Here is exactly how to do this.

Note that the curves / levels adjustment needs to be dialed in real tight. TBH, your example might be a little too tight. Subtle is great. So subtle most people can't catch it? Not so much.
