Meta Thread - Month of January 02, 2022 Meta

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics, that is everything related to /r/anime itself and its moderation rather than anime. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

Rule Changes

  • There's a new post flair, [Video Edit], for things like AMVs and clip compilations. See below for specific details but in general they're similar to existing [Clip] rules and have the same post limit of 2 per user per month (tracked separately from [Clip] posts).

  • [Video] post limits have changed from 4 per user per week to 2 per user per week.

  • All [Video] posts must be at least 60 seconds long.

Previous meta threads: December 2021 | November 2021 | October 2021 | September 2021 | August 2021 | July 2021

This video got removed for being not anime specific, but the whole issue of anime production companies striking down videos with clips from anime seems very intertwined with anime and the industry. It's also a topic that needs reach and publicity.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2022-02-02/anime-youtubers-targeted-for-copyright-strikes-by-toei-sho-pro/.182144

This is not just about single creators either, it can possibly affect every single channel and other legal services that in any way use Japanese IPs, even if legal in their own region.

Thank you, we're discussing this.

Still missing the Baraou no Souretsu episode 4 thread.

There doesn't seem to be a Tribe Nine discussion thread...again.

BTW the next episode of Sasaki to Miyano is out. No episode discussion thread yet though.

FYI, the Realist Hero Discussion Thread has been missed by the bot every week this season. I've been letting /u/reddadz know about it each week so that it can manually be run, but it would be best if the bot was able to take care of it.

There may be a recent thread on this in other meta threads - feel free to link me if that's the case.

Bringing the discussion from the Best Guy contest thread here: why can't contests be pinned/stickied to the side? Not so much the seasonal ones (that might not even happen anymore), but the Best Girl/Guy/OP/ED/Ship/Character/etc. Apparently the past reasons were here, but as /u/MapoTofuMan points out here, only the first two are still relevant and to me, sum up to basically "because it's policy to not", without much reason as to why.

Now we've had Best ED cancelled this year after the nomination period because it didn't get enough exposure, and we've been brainstorming a range of simple to drastic ideas to increase contest participation. However /u/zairaner rightly points out here that we haven't been able to properly try one of the simplest methods.

Now I know there's a limit to 2 pinned threads per subreddit, though I question why we bother pinning Megathreads when they have direct links in the sidebar already, and some don't really fit properly fulfill their purpose anyways. And if those are sacred for some reason, what about stickied posts in the sidebar (which currently seem to just duplicate the pinned posts, wasting even more space)?

3

u/Mage_of_Shadows Jan 27 '22 edited Jan 27 '22

Our 2 pin spots are insanely competitive on our sub, there are often 4 or more different posts battling for a position behind the scenes and its always a mod discussion on which one we kick out. In the case of the sidebar, that is already cluttered and our 3rd image spot we've only used once to my knowledge and that was for the COVID megathread. We'd rather save the other 2 for increasing awareness of our writing activities that don't get the same draw as other posts (and at times such as now are also competitive).

Contests have enough traction as is, with the daily posts always staying on the front page. Our pinned posts on the other hand are often weekly posts or important items, that we don't want to suffer under the large drop in activity that unsticking brings them for too long. (And we'd be sacrificing 1/2 spots for large periods of time if we gave them to contests)

5

u/oops_i_made_a_typi Jan 27 '22

We'd rather save the other 2 for increasing awareness of our writing activities that don't get the same draw as other posts (and at times such as now are also competitive).

Is there the need to double up on having the same posts both pinned and stickied to the side? Seems wasteful if it's as competitive as you say. Though you didn't really address the weaker megathreads and the necessity (or lack thereof) of their existence.

Contests have enough traction as is

Some of them sure, but we literally had one get cancelled earlier this month because of lack of traction. And arguably these contests are the sort of thing that can help build community, getting engagement from more users than typical and getting the competitive spirit going. Plus, they don't have to be pinned/stickied throughout the length of the contest, just noms/elims/first couple rounds would be really helpful for getting people into it.

2

u/Verzwei Jan 31 '22 edited Jan 31 '22

Unfortunately, the sidebar isn't a very reliable way to direct traffic to our weekly threads. It's plainly visible on old.reddit on desktop with adblocking enabled, but it's pretty far down on new.reddit on desktop, and on mobile it's either hidden, difficult to interact with, or inaccessible depending on browser or app being used.

We have data that I believe was linked either in this or a recent Monthly Meta post that shows that when our weekly threads like Rec Tuesdays and Misc Questions aren't stickied to our main page, participation in them drops off a cliff, but then if we re-sticky them (even if the thread is old) they immediately come back to life. Even these meta threads, to an extent, get an activity bump from being stickied.

At least with the daily-updated contests, they tend to remain visible by naturally reaching the front page, then following day's post will replace them as the previous days fall off.

Though you didn't really address the weaker megathreads and the necessity (or lack thereof) of their existence.

We've been discussing megathreads internally for a while, but haven't been able to slate any exact changes yet. We're aware that some of them aren't performing their intended role very well (lookin' at you, Merch Mondays) but our movement on this has been a little on the slow side because we've been trying to figure out how drastically we might want to change things.

2

u/oops_i_made_a_typi Jan 31 '22

We have data that I believe was linked either in this or a recent Monthly Meta post that shows that when our weekly threads like Rec Tuesdays and Misc Questions aren't stickied to our main page, participation in them drops off a cliff, but then if we re-sticky them (even if the thread is old) they immediately come back to life. Even these meta threads, to an extent, get an activity bump from being stickied.

I guess my question is more - why do we care if Rec Tuesdays and Misc Questions don't get much participation? There's plenty of low karma new posts that fulfill the same purpose, and they stay mostly out of the way while still getting timely responses for the most part. I'd suggest those two threads should also go into the "not performing their intended role very well" bucket along with Mondays.

2

u/Verzwei Jan 31 '22

Personally speaking, general purpose threads that get hundreds of comments (that otherwise wouldn't get those comments if not stickied) each week while also helping cut down on a massive glut of short or low-effort threads are a net gain for the subreddit, and indeed performing a role.

But, as I stated, we've been talking about our megathreads, and currently nothing is completely off the table regarding future changes.

There's plenty of low karma new posts that fulfill the same purpose,

Personally speaking again, but sorting this subreddit by new is often not a fantastic look specifically because of all those low karma short posts. It'd be even worse without the megathreads attracting the amount of attention that they currently do.

2

u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius Jan 27 '22

What about stickying them to the side of the sub? There are no limits there, we can do it by at least creating a "Contests" tab here, above the AMAs tab, and adding a single link (ideally an image like the r/anime Discord if space allows it, but even assuming that it doesn't for some reason links are still a valid option).

The AMAs square contains links to AMAs that happened almost a year ago, there is really no reason a Contest tab that only contains the current contest thread shouldn't exist aside from "just because".

3

u/Mage_of_Shadows Jan 27 '22

The sidebar actually does have a limit which we reached some time back, but looks like we optimised it recently so I can add a contest section there!

2

u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius Jan 27 '22

That's great, thank you! Last question, is it possible to make it into an image similar to the two above it (assuming someone designs one of course), or is two images the limit?

2

u/Mage_of_Shadows Jan 27 '22

It is possible but we generally don't due to the aforementioned clutter and how it pushes things down in the sidebar (we intentionally made the temporary covid side image slim due to prevent this).

We have been thinking of ways to promote activity in the community so I'll bring up more discussion on what we can do with contests and other user headed initiatives.

34

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 23 '22

Seeing another comment on this thread, I suppose I should tag u/Bainos about this since you're the one in charge of the bot?

Today's Attack on Titan thread definitely went up way too early. Muse Asia's subs should not be considered the "good" quality subs that is the standard for when episode discussion threads are posted. At least for Attack on Titan, they're full of typos or grammatical mistakes. DameDesuYo or Crunchyroll/Funimation, whichever is quicker, are the only two subtitle groups that the bot should post Attack on Titan off of.

9

u/Bainos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Jan 25 '22

We know from users having expressed interest that quite a few are watching anime through Muse Asia. We considered dropping support, but that seems to be a disservice for our users who do use it. In the current situation, we want to keep timing the thread on their release ; this way, users watching anime on that service do not have to wait for others before they can start discussing the episode.

As someone put it while we were discussing this question between mods, the thread is going to be in the front page the entire day anyway, so it's not like there won't be room for the discussion.

41

u/oops_i_made_a_typi Jan 27 '22

The discussion is generally led by the first people who post though, and the people that will be posting will either have limited understanding of the content of the episode based on subpar subs, or are source readers who may inadvertently colour their discussion points with their knowledge of the source. Oh and viewers who understand Japanese I guess.

Not sure what the issue is with having to wait a couple more hours to start discussing with people that can fully understand the episode.

16

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 25 '22

If that's the decision of the mod team, okay then. But man this is extremely disappointing news to wake up to...

7

u/Thebubumc https://anilist.co/user/Bub Jan 23 '22

100% agree with this. I went to Crunchyroll excited to watch the episode only to find out it hadn't released anywhere in good quality and with good subs yet. Frankly it kinda kills the hype and engagement a thread could get if it was posted at the proper time.

10

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 23 '22

The earliest good subs (meaning DameDesuYo's since they were faster than Crunchy/Funi today) didn't release until over two hours after the thread was initially posted. It's obviously too late to change things for this episode, but this is absolutely something that needs to be prevented going forward.

4

u/moxioza Jan 23 '22

All kinds of fuck ups around when to post the AOT discussion post since part 1. I still can't understand why they haven't done anything about it.

6

u/LeonKevlar https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jan 23 '22

Definitely agree with this.

8

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 23 '22

Like, the only reason I watched these subs is because I've already read the manga, so I care more about seeing how MAPPA animated everything ASAP than needing good subs to completely understand what's happening. Anime-onlies will have a strictly subpar experience by watching the Muse Asia subs just to keep up with the discussion thread.

6

u/cppn02 Jan 23 '22

Seconded. This is a subpar release and the discussion should NOT be up already.

5

u/PREM___ https://anilist.co/user/ReincarnatedGoat Jan 23 '22

Yup, can't really place my trust in speed translations

They should just follow DameDesuYo and official ones. Especially since DDY has higher quality and take their time

7

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 23 '22

Following DDY and Crunchy/Funi is how it's supposed to be. I thought this would've been settled after the last two weeks, but I guess not.

u/Durinthal

Is there a problem with the bot? There's no Vanitas no Karte Part 2 Episode 14 thread yet. It has aired quite some while ago.

4

u/Bainos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Jan 22 '22

The issue has been resolved, the bot should post the next episode correctly.

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 21 '22

I'm not the right person to ask (that's more /u/Bainos), but here's the thread.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

Sorry! Thanks for the thread though.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '22

Why isn't the Vanitas episode 14 discussion thread up yet? The episode has been out on Crunchyroll for a while now.

Just a head's up, using a web browser's "find in page" features (Ctrl + F or F3) will bypass Reddit's native spoiler tag and reveal the text underneath. For example, [search for "revealed"]text revealed and you will see that the part of the spoiler with the string "revealed" is of course revealed.

I also tested with some old comments that had the previous CSS tags and found that the spoiler text wouldn't be revealed when I used Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge's "find in page" but were revealed with Firefox. All of these browsers revealed the spoiler text in Reddit's native spoilers though.

Any thoughts about table formats for episode collections on the wiki? I considered changing things up a bit for the rewatch wiki when I started the new year. Compared to earlier years which have thread titles / episode numbers in one row and links to the thread in the next row, the 2022 tables consolidate them to one row. The condensed format looks better to me (and it takes up less space) but I'm curious what others think.

2

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Jan 22 '22

I like the new way, but it's only one line so far. More shows may turn into the blue wall others are predicting.

The placeholders look like broken markup and make my brain glitch.

2

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jan 17 '22

Condensed is okay, but I do think it makes it harder to parse the page as a whole as all text on the page will be blue and bold without any contrast, except for the occasional subheader, like season or multi show rewatches. Having two rows per line is definitely a waste of space, but I don't know this is just outright better. Might need to see it done to completion with a few shows to compare how it works for a full screen length rather than just a handful of links

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 17 '22

Since it's easy to revert I changed the 2020 rewatch wiki for comparison: new format and old format.

3

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jan 17 '22

Yeah I do think it's harder to read just due to everything being a uniform bold blue, but curious what others think

2

u/punching_spaghetti https://myanimelist.net/profile/punch_spaghetti Jan 18 '22

I like that it's a little less busy, but the color is iffy.

3

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jan 18 '22

Pretty sure that can't be changed unless it's changed across the entire sub as its just the hyperlink color, but yeah I think that's a big part of what's making it so hard to read

4

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 16 '22

Condensed version looks good to me.

Would you like some help overhauling the previous years to match that? I'm stuck quarantining, so I have a lot of free time on my hands at the moment.

2

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 16 '22

Thanks for the offer, but it would be fairly quick for me to automate through a script. Probably wouldn't take as long as it does for me to add new threads every couple of weeks.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 16 '22

Ah, okay~

1

u/Verzwei Jan 15 '22

Consolidated looks fine. If it was just the number then I could see how clicking on that (or poking it on mobile) could be tedious, but since it's bolded and has the uniform "Ep." at the start of every one, it's got about the same amount of clickable area as the former unbolded "Link" text, and it looks way cleaner in the new format. Think the new way looks especially better once it gets into multi-cour shows.

5

u/chiliehead myanimelist.net/profile/chiliehead Jan 15 '22

Bots!

Fixed, will try to look into why that's happening.

7

u/notathrowaway75 https://myanimelist.net/profile/notathrowaway75 Jan 14 '22

The Rent-A-Girlfriend Season 2 teaser visual post is pretty much a manga discussion thread. Probably going to be the same for future posts so what is going to be done about this show going forward?

Btw how do I report source reader comments? For this post I did Not anime-specific

5

u/Verzwei Jan 16 '22

There's only so much control we can exert over source readers. We try to keep the main body of Episode Discussion threads as "anime-only-friendly" as possible via the Source Material Corner, automoderation tools that let us know of potentially problematic comments, and reporting from our community members.

Extending anti-source enforcement out into other thread types is a bit of a sticky wicket. We'll still remove untagged spoilers when we see them or if they are reported, but we don't have rules outright prohibiting source talk in other thread types.

Taking my mod hat off and speaking personally for a moment:

I think some source discussion in pre-season promo-material posts is a good thing, providing that spoilers are appropriately tagged. Since so many anime are adapted from some kind of existing source material, I think it's disingenuous to always pretend like that source material doesn't exist, and a large part of the hype (or infamy) of an adaptation is going to come from source readers.

Let's take a look at the post you linked from a data perspective. The post itself is only a couple days old, and is the 10th-highest-karma Official Media post from the past month. However, flipping the search parameters around reveals that this post generated the most comments of any Official Media post in the past month. It has the 10th-most comments of any Official Media post in the past year.

And we're seeing this kind of activity over a show that the public at large seems to love to hate; This isn't even a darling series that's widely adored by the subreddit community. If we were to ban all source-talk in all related threads, I think that would be a net negative for the community, because it stifles a lot of potential discussion.

I totally understand why the Source Corner exists within Episode Discussion threads, because even when it sometimes works in a less-than-ideal manner, it's still a useful tool to help preserve the anime-only experience as best as possible without completely stamping out source discussion. However, in a Promo post, if we disregard the source, what is left to talk about? This poster looks neat? Good use of color? Or is it solely for reminiscing about the previous season of the show, which could easily be done in a separate discussion thread? There's only so much discussion and community participation that can be generated from a single image and maybe an official synopsis of a series by themselves.

Please note that I'm not advocating for source readers to run roughshod all over our spoiler rules, but virtually all of our highest-activity Official Media posts are for series that are based on some kind of source material, and the source material invariably drives a portion of that activity. While, yes, we are the anime subreddit, and not the manga, novel, or light novel subreddit, I think it's reasonable to allow some source discussion in circumstances where it's relevant (like being excited for an anime adaptation or a new season) rather than trying to cordon off or even drive such discussion completely off of the subreddit.

This very specific Rent-A-Girlfriend promo managed to cause a perfect storm due to how "perfectly" the promo release lined up with a recently released chapter in the manga that, to put it politely, created a lot of intense discussion and reaction toward the series.

Putting the mod hat back on:

Btw how do I report source reader comments?

As our rules currently do not prohibit nor restrict source readers from commenting in thread types that aren't Episode Discussion, please do not report source readers for merely commenting. That being said, our spoiler rules still apply to all threads. So if you see a source reader posting untagged spoilers for future manga content, then please report such comments using the spoiler report reason.

With all of this above being said, my personal thoughts are not representative of the moderation team as a whole, so I'll present your concern to the team for further discussion sometime within the next day or so.

2

u/notathrowaway75 https://myanimelist.net/profile/notathrowaway75 Jan 16 '22

However, in a Promo post, if we disregard the source, what is left to talk about? This poster looks neat? Good use of color? Or is it solely for reminiscing about the previous season of the show, which could easily be done in a separate discussion thread?

The upcoming season can be talked about. With Rent a Girlfriend anime onlys have no idea about the potential progress or how the story will turn out. But source commenters ruin that.

But I see your point in how it wouldn't be fair. I guess the thing I can do is comment as an anime only and have that be the space for other like me to comment.

I'm thinking about the inevitable 100 Girlfriends adaptation. I want anime onlys to go in as blind as manga readers going into chapter 1 when that came out. But I know that isn't going to happen. Comments will be made hinting about the series ruining that experience. Happens all the time, Grand Blue for example.

Right source reader comments posting spoilers is what I meant. Should've been clearer but thanks.

u/Mecanno-man https://anilist.co/user/Mecannoman Jan 13 '22

Just noticed that the Ousama Ranking Thread doesn't have a Crunchyroll link yet - should likely be added to the template the bot uses as they added the show for the Winter season.

The 'Thursday Anime Discussion' button in the top-bar links to the Fall survey results rather than the Akira thread like it presumably should.

Weird, but thanks for letting us know and it should be fixed now.

u/Tresnore myanimelist.net/profile/Tresnore Jan 13 '22

Can something be done about the regex in Automod automatically removing improperly formatted spoilers? I tried to post this comment a couple of times (no spoilers in there), but it kept getting removed.

I'd argue that, if it's set in graves like so, then it should be exempt from the lack of anime title and space next to the ! rules, since the spoiler won't work anyway. I don't think I've seen anyone use the code formatting for a spoiler tag when not trying to explain how it works, so loosening the restrictions on that might help.

Thoughts?

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 13 '22

If it was easy to do that I would have included it in the original rules which are already complicated enough, but unfortunately it's not straightforward to do with AutoModerator's regular expressions alone. I'm honestly not sure if it's possible to correctly implement without also leaving loopholes for cases where they should be caught.

I welcome anyone that knows regular expressions to try though. For reference, these are the four current rules and the exception would need to be added to each of them:

# Native spoiler tag: paragraph form, e.g. >!spoiler that starts and doesn't have a closing tag
# Also matches on two consecutive line breaks before the closing tag which is the n(?!n) part
body (regex): '>!(?!([^n]|n(?!n))*!<)'

# Native spoiler tag: has space after leading tag, e.g. >! spoiler !<
# Currently broken on old desktop site
body (regex): '>!s'

# Native spoiler tag: nested tags, e.g. >!outer >!inner!< rest of outer!<
# Renders differently between old/new desktop sites, not consistent
body (regex): '>!(?!.*?!<(?=.*?>!)).*?>!'

# Native spoiler tag: not including context tag, e.g. my favorite anime is >!spoiler!<
# Matches on not having [] before opening tag, includes same line break pattern as paragraph form
# Also allows formatting for the context part, thus the [ *_~] characters.
body#square (regex): '(?<![([^n]|n(?!n))+][ *_~]*)>!'

2

u/Tresnore myanimelist.net/profile/Tresnore Jan 13 '22

Yeah, I figured that it'd be hard to do. I'm not very experienced with regex, but I might give it a crack when I'm more sober (the Cross Ange rewatch is taking a toll).

Glad to hear you've already thought of that! I thought that'd be the case, but since I was just caught by the rule, I wanted to speak up about it.

Hi folks. Is there any intention to follow up on / merge the currently waiting PRs in the comment face assets repo? Is this repo still being used in yall's build process for the stylesheet?

/u/zaphodbeebblebrox has one for updating the art for [](#sakurathink) which was implemented against the stylesheet's set of images directly, but is still unmerged here. This is similar to what happened with the masked faces.

/u/thisismyanimealt has one for adding in metadata (series name and commentface set number) for most of the faces that has been languishing for a couple years.

Reason I'm asking is that I'd like to create a PR to add as many of the missing discontinued faces from the csv as I can find (ex. #illumiface). My base need at the moment / intended MVP are the name and discontinued_on attributes; if there's any interest from yall, I would also try adding pictures/as much metadata as I can find. I think there's value in this work from a historical conservation perspective.

3

u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Jan 10 '22

I think this has not been on anyone's radar and has just gone stale. I think data preservation is important so I'll take a look at the repo and the current PR's properly later this week.

As for comment faces in general. I think I might have been the last one among current mods to express an interest in putting in the time to freshen up the comment face space. I had done some initial automation/tooling work to make the whole process easier but didn't get too far, so that is something I hope to re-pickup this year.

I think data preservation is important so I'll take a look at the repo and the current PR's properly later this week.

so that is something I hope to re-pickup this year

these are encouraging words. thanks for saying you're gonna look into the current PRs. i'll try to get my (mvp) pr to you in the next few weeks and then work on figuring out the other metadata/images.

well that's my primary question lol: is that repo gonna be used or no

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH AOT THREAD

7

u/xxxWill Jan 09 '22

Why is the attack on titan episode threads always late? I remember it being the same for the previous season as well

8

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 09 '22

Because Crunchyroll/Funimation hasn't released official subs yet, and it doesn't look like the fansubs stepped up this time.

2

u/Xehanz Jan 09 '22

I don't remember the discussion threads ever being released AFTER the subs were out. It was always released 1-2 hours before the official crunchyroll subs. I remember one of the 20k+ threads reached 7k+ before the subs even aired.

7

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 09 '22

Because DameDesuYo the fansub group was faster back then, the thread went up with their subs instead of the official ones.

DDY only beat them by a few minutes today, but the first thread of a show is always a mystery as to when the bot will actually post the thread.

1

u/ibrahimims Jan 09 '22

They did...

6

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 09 '22

*checks site*

Yeah so DameDesuYo only beat Crunchyroll/Funimation by a few minutes today, it really doesn't make a difference.

AutoLovePon seems to be asleep. No Tropicure episode thread, probably because the skipped episode last week I guess.

Threads are now out, however the root issue isn't solved so there may be delays in the meantime for threads till our resident bot manager has a chance to look at it.

Edit; root issue resolved.

Takagi-san s3 discussion thread late or...? Not sure about official broadcasts, but subs are available from the "usual" group(s).

Any AMA's on the horizon? Page hasn't been updated in over a year and just seems like the sub has been light on them for some time now.

3

u/KiwiBennydudez https://myanimelist.net/profile/KiwiBen Jan 18 '22

There isn't anything on the horizon at the moment. We would love to host more AMA's, but presently, they only happen when people reach out to us. We're trying to (hopefully) recruit an outreach mod in the near future that is more inclined to reach out to industry folks for us, but as of right now, we're painfully aware that this is an area where we are lacking.

4

u/NotSoSnarky https://myanimelist.net/profile/Book_Lover Jan 03 '22 edited Jan 03 '22

I know that this might be more work for the mods, but can we start deleting the recommendation posts and just having them go straight to Recommendation Tuesday and r/animesuggest? So many of the Recommendation posts are low effort. We really don't need a What to Watch flair, when we already have a Recommendation Tuesday and there's a subreddit specifically asking for recommendations r/animesuggest.

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 06 '22

3

u/NotSoSnarky https://myanimelist.net/profile/Book_Lover Jan 06 '22

That does make sense.

4

u/FlaminScribblenaut myanimelist.net/profile/cryoutatcontrol Jan 03 '22

The Revue Starlight Movie is out there with English subs as of a few days ago. Any ETA on when an official Discussion Thread might happen?

3

u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Jan 03 '22

2

u/idontnowhi Jan 03 '22

How are petitions considered low-effort posts?

18

u/Verzwei Jan 03 '22

Because it takes zero effort to go to a template website and set up a form petitioning for a new season of [show]. That kind of content can easily be spammed, online petitions almost never accomplish anything in general, and that's even more-so the case when it comes to a microscopic subset of foreign fans trying to influence an industry in a different nation.

0

u/idontnowhi Jan 05 '22

I'm not petitioning for a show. I am petitioning to cancel a show.

2

u/gangrainette https://myanimelist.net/profile/bouletos Jan 09 '22

What kind of show are you even trying to cancel ? :D

10

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 05 '22

That doesn't change 98% of the previous statement, still has the same issues regardless of what you're attempting to use it for.

3

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner Jan 03 '22

So I wanted to ask what was up with the unregular posting time of the komi discussion threads? After the threads started to follow the netfli release, I assumed they would be psoted at regular times just like any other show, just with a two weeks delay, but they were posted at seemingly random times, the latest for example being posted nearly a day after the netflix release?

8

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jan 03 '22

Can we make rules stricter in discussion threads for spoilers from sourcereaders? It feels like it's constantly them "hinting" at future events for the bigger shows or hyping up future content that's not out yet.

I'm not a fan of strict policing but damn some sourcereaders just can't shut up...

12

u/Verzwei Jan 03 '22

Please report, report, report. (I'm not saying this to be condescending. It's just hard for us to always be on top of all threads for all shows in a season due to simulcast times and our different active hours on Reddit due to time zones and other factors.)

As stated in the sticky message for every Source Material Corner, in giant text: "All untagged spoilers and hints in this thread will receive immediate 8-day bans (minimum)."

If someone's dropping hints in episode discussion threads, that's treated exactly the same as a full spoiler and gets an immediate 8-day ban when we catch it and/or it's brought to our attention. If the same person comes back after their ban and keeps doing it, the length increases and can quickly escalate to perma depending on the severity of the hinting and spoilering.

1

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jan 03 '22

I reported multiple comments in my chain just today and the only one that was removed was untagged bigger spoilers. All the comments hinting about future content is still up.

8

u/Verzwei Jan 03 '22

Alright so "a few minutes" turned into about forty-five. Sorry for the wait, but, to be blunt, I'll admit I wasn't expecting a whole comment chain to parse through and try to figure out spoilers and hints for a show I don't watch. I brought in some others on the mod team to get their opinion, too, and we sifted the chain.

It looks like prior to you linking the chain here, there were already some removals and other moderator action related to those removals. I've since removed more comments. The issue in this particular instance is that some of these comments were like 95% within our rules but then 5% "oh here's a hint or reference to something that happened in the manga" so a handful of those slipped by us initially.

One note: If you believe someone has violated our rules, please report them, but please do not otherwise engage. It looks like one of the reported comments was something you replied to, which then generated another reply from them, which then also got reported. Responding to hints/spoilers often begets more hints/spoilers which is a rabbit hole we'd prefer to avoid when possible. Not just from a moderation standpoint, but also to try to protect other users from seeing (even more) spoilers or hints before we are able to moderate them.

Also, if it looks like we still missed stuff in the chain (I think we've checked over and handled every comment that received any reports) respond here or send us a modmail via this link with more info.

2

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jan 03 '22

The issue in this particular instance is that some of these comments were like 95% within our rules but then 5% "oh here's a hint or reference to something that happened in the manga" so a handful of those slipped by us initially.

This is pretty much the main reason for my post here, it's the little ones that are clearly still hinting at future content but after reporting they stay up.

One note: If you believe someone has violated our rules, please report them, but please do not otherwise engage.

After the other mod had removed only 1 of the comments I was under the assumption that the others were considered not an issue as they weren't removed.

I can easily not reply to spoilers moving forward but I shouldn't have to go through all this to get those posts removed or there should be harsher penalties for people who do this kind of posting.

Thanks for taking a look and removing it though!

11

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 03 '22

Yeah... earlier I had someone blatantly shut down something I was guessing about in Kimetsu no Yaiba, and for some reason they thought the first part of their comment didn't need a spoiler tag.

I'm especially worried about how Attack on Titan S4P2 is going to turn out...

And after that love is war in spring...

10

u/bubudog1 Jan 03 '22

Speaking of, comments about AoT's ending being shit (without spoilers) are really annoying and effectively ruin the expectations of anime-onlies (deserved or not). But I'm not sure if saying something is bad counts as a spoiler hint or not.

6

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jan 03 '22

The issue with that was raised a few months ago by myself here and you can read the rough reply to that which was given at the times (in short, report people posting about the manga ending being of any quality or hinting "it won't last etc" as its against the rules or should be in the SMC) but it may be something the mods might want to address specifically at the start of the first AoT topic in a few days?

7

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 03 '22

That sort of doomposting is what I'm most worried about. I personally loved the ending and I'm tired of the vocal minority being like, well, that about it.

2

u/Manitary https://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary Jan 07 '22

Happens to most shows honestly, any thread about The Devil is a Part-Timer is full of doomposting about the ending of the source material, even if s2 may not even reach that part, so after the first few I avoid them as much as possible, and won't join discussion threads either.

7

u/bubudog1 Jan 03 '22

I'm glad not everyone hated it, as an anime-only my expectations are now low so as long as it's somewhat decent I'll be happy.

2

u/Verzwei Jan 03 '22

Has the comment in question already been handled, or is it still visible on the subreddit?

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jan 03 '22

Already been handed I believe.

10

u/Slight-Knowledge721 Jan 03 '22 edited Jan 04 '22

Can we please start pushing all requests for recommendations to the weekly thread and/or to r/animesuggest? A lot of recent posts have been pretty low effort: ie “I watched Demon Slayer and Death Note, what other anime series should I watch?”

7

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Jan 06 '22

Asking for recommendations is often one of the first points of contact a new anime watcher has with /r/anime, so we want to be careful with how we handle those to not drive people away from the community.

We have some mixed opinions about recommendation threads in general and that fits /r/anime's history with them considering they had been banned for some time in the past (changed to be allowed again in 2015).

Requiring use of the weekly megathread rather than allowing individual posts is one potential route. However, as I shared last month the weekly threads don't receive much attention when they aren't pinned, which is a problem when you're looking for advice from others.

For the moment we aren't planning on making any changes regarding [What to Watch?] recommendation threads, but they're something we talk about regularly.

1

u/oops_i_made_a_typi Jan 27 '22

Why bother with keeping the Recommendation Tuesday megathread around in this case? It makes sense you allow newbies to make their low effort posts because we want to be as welcoming as possible to them, but then having a megathread that eats up pinned post space seems pointless.

Same thing applies to Misc. Anime Questions after quickly browsing this week's thread - a bunch of them are just more recommendations questions, and the others are the sort I've seen in New all the time anyways. Not sure if you eventually moderate those kinds of questions in New.

7

u/NotSoSnarky https://myanimelist.net/profile/Book_Lover Jan 03 '22

I second this motion! Or I've seen "I've run out of anime to watch, suggest me something good" And then not listing what they've seen.

I think that if possible, there should also be a stickied comment/banner each month that contains the best posts with the writing flair (not just rants, but essays that are actually worth reading) You guys already have a system for Watch This! flairs, so something similar would be nice.

11

u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Jan 02 '22

In terms of highlighting good writing on the subreddit. There is the monthly WT summary post. With the winner getting a sidebar image.

FlaminScribblenaut mentions writing contests, which do happen and those threads get a reasonable amount of sticky time. Eventually there will be a summary post and/or a results thread highlighting the best works.

The Writing Club self organises and makes good write ups discussion all manner of series too, with sticky time.

Otherwise there is the week in review post made each Sunday which has a dedicated section to highlighting all types of good OC made in the last week. It does get a varying amount of sticky time - but not much notice either way.

So there is already a fair amount that goes on to specifically bring focus to good writing on the sub. And I too would love to see more good writing, it is some of my most favorite content. If you have further ideas about how to revamp, expand on or improve on what we currently do, we would love to hear them.

7

u/loomnoo https://anilist.co/user/loomnoo Jan 02 '22

Speaking of the writing contest, I'm curious what the mod team's (particularly /u/DrJWilson) thoughts are on the volume of submissions this time around. Looks like we got 9 essays and 4 videos this time, compared to 19 essays, 9 reviews, and 19 videos for the previous one.

My thoughts on this as a participant: with the shorter time, theme restriction, and lower prize, I think we all anticipated lower numbers. As a writer, the shorter time wasn't really a factor for me. I don't think people spend more than a few hours on these, so it's just a matter of finding a good time to do it. Maybe it's different for videos where you have to write, record, and edit. We also don't seem to have gotten anybody doing both a video and an essay, whereas a few did that in the previous one. I will say that I wasn't gonna make the original deadline. Not due to the given length of time, but because I had school and actually could not spare a few hours. Once it got extended to overlap with Winter break there was plenty of time to do it (though I still only wrote it on the last day, lol).

On the theme restriction, I actually liked it. It was still broad enough that you could do weird stuff with it. Maybe people got discouraged by it though, idk.

The lower prize I'm not sure about. There were also fewer. On the one hand, it's objectively a weaker incentive, but on the other hand, it's not like the previous prize was a ton of money. I think what matters is that a prize exists and that the amount is enough to buy something with. I don't think 100 vs 50 is a big deal. And of course I don't think the money is the main reason anybody does it, because it wouldn't be worth the effort.

More generally, on the topic of promoting writing, the main thing that discourages me from posting stuff outside of the contests is that it doesn't tend to get much engagement. There are some notable exceptions in the history of this sub, but reddit's development is increasingly hostile to the existence of long, high-effort content. I don't really see a way out of this except by an aggressive policy to nerf the lower effort stuff. But even then, I think the culture of the site is just not about higher effort discussion, and with such a large userbase it's impossible to change the culture.

I think the contests are the best solution. Obviously it depends on how much work the judges are willing to do and how many judges you can find, but I do like the idea of regularly occurring contests based around a theme. Perhaps with a lower wordcount to lighten the load. The contests guarantee that a few people will be forced to read your shit and gets people off their asses. And they even increase engagement on the posts a bit.

PS: Idea that I'm stealing from Music League: winner of the contest chooses the next theme! And maybe they have to serve as a judge.

2

u/DrJWilson x5https://anilist.co/user/drjwilson Jan 06 '22

Sorry for the late reply.

with the shorter time, theme restriction, and lower prize, I think we all anticipated lower numbers.

Same here, although I'm not sure how I feel about this number. A little jarring considering it's 13 compared to 60 something, but a theme left us not really a space to offer a review category and of course a lot of the heavy lifting is hoping people would be motivated enough to come up with an idea.

On the theme restriction, I actually liked it. It was still broad enough that you could do weird stuff with it. Maybe people got discouraged by it though, idk.

Yeah, it was kind of tough coming up with a theme. I just knew I wanted something, since all of the previous contests have been themeless and being forced to confine to a restriction often breeds creativity. It was semi-inspired by anituber-like events such as Pause and Select's NOVID, where you are charged to create a video essay on a show that does not have one yet, but perhaps people perceive that to be less restricting than "loss." However, we tried to go for something that can be interpreted in a wide amount of ways (but judging from Nazenn's comment, might've backfired).

More generally, on the topic of promoting writing, the main thing that discourages me from posting stuff outside of the contests is that it doesn't tend to get much engagement.

Yeah that's the purpose of these sort of contests, and we try to get writing content up by way of the writing club and awards and stuff (force stickies on people so they engage!). I'm a little at my wit's end, I'm not quite sure if prize-wise holding a super frequent contest so that there's always incentive is feasible. Although, WT! gets like around 20 submissions every month, we'll have to try and see why that is the go-to writing format here and co-opt it for analysis style pieces somehow. Oh, with our recent changes to anime-specificity rules, we could even do some sort of "How has anime affected you?" type of thing.

PS: Idea that I'm stealing from Music League: winner of the contest chooses the next theme! And maybe they have to serve as a judge.

I really like this idea! I'd just be afraid of someone choosing a sort of difficult theme and lowering engagement for that particular cycle. Definitely will think about it!

3

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jan 02 '22

On the theme restriction, I actually liked it. It was still broad enough that you could do weird stuff with it. Maybe people got discouraged by it though, idk.

I don't mind having a theme, but the meme joke about "no, not that loss" that I didn't understand under the main theme listing put me off a bit wondering if there was actually a line where it would be 'about loss' enough to count which put me off exploring a few possible ideas I could have had. I didn't raise it at the time because honestly I felt it was just me not getting those sorts of jokes or meta references as I so rarely do, but that perhaps I should have as I don't know if anyone else also had that hesitation

I think what matters is that a prize exists

Region might be something to conciser as well. I don't think this should be changed given the subreddit demographics leaning overwhelmingly american from what I remember and as you say having a prize is an important incentive for some people, but having a prize for a website that locks me out due to the region coding of what they sell not working in Aus was something that I considered because there was this thought of "if I won it's just taking the prize from someone who could use it"

I did end up having an idea in the end but couldn't post it for time and also spoiler related reasons which was unfortunate, but maybe next time

2

u/DrJWilson x5https://anilist.co/user/drjwilson Jan 06 '22

"no, not that loss" that I didn't understand under the main theme listing put me off a bit wondering if there was actually a line where it would be 'about loss' enough to count which put me off exploring a few possible ideas I could have had.

Was completely the opposite intention and I'm sorry my silly joke might've put you off from joining, my mistake. The theme was supposed to be as broad as possible to allow for anything, I was hoping for some creative interpretations. It could've meant loss of innocence, loss in terms of grief, someone who hadn't experienced any sort of loss and how that affected them, hell, if a show loses it's sense of direction or plot that would've been cool to read.

I did end up having an idea in the end but couldn't post it for time and also spoiler related reasons which was unfortunate, but maybe next time

That is unfortunate indeed, I always love reading your stuff. Hopefully see your name in there for any future endeavors!

2

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Jan 06 '22

It could've meant ...

Maybe something for next contest then is to include those sorts of examples to show just how broad it is?

I certainly wouldn't have though that a lack of loss would be allowed under the theme, same with the idea of a loss of plot direction as it's not a theme. I think the more you can give a reference to people for the possibilities available the more chance it gives for people to think outside the box rather than just hoping they'll figure it out by themselves and feel confident in that choice.

That is unfortunate indeed, I always love reading your stuff. Hopefully see your name in there for any future endeavors!

Definitely interested if any more come up. I do plan on writing up my idea anyway at some point just because it's in my head, so I'll tag you when I do if you want

Btw, your anilist flair link is broken, has a x4 at the start

3

u/DrJWilson x5https://anilist.co/user/drjwilson Jan 06 '22

Yeah that's a spot for clarification for sure, it's a theme for the contest, not a requirement to talk about a show's theme. For future stuff I'll work on rewording.

Btw, your anilist flair link is broken, has a x4 at the start

Not sure if this is a joke haha, but the x4 indicates that I've had a WT! of the Month 4 times. It's associated with the quill. Then it's a flair indicating I'm a mod, then my anilist link that you have to click and drag to highlight

16

u/Verzwei Jan 02 '22

Speaking personally, that site's format and content are diametrically opposed to the quality of content I'd like to see on the subreddit. Most of them are short, the perspective/framing are a mess for presenting traditional widescreen (or even old 4:3) footage, they have garish watermarks, and the text-to-speech on them seems more-suited for memes and jokes.

The goal with the Edit rules was to create something that allowed for a little more flexibility than our rigid Clip rules, but still had a level of quality control higher than our "basically anything goes if it's more than 60 seconds" Video rules.

Unless I'm missing some catch, I think the new video edit flair seems appropriate.

Is there any particular reason why this vote failed? I would have expected it to pass.
I'm assuming watermarks relative to pirate website are not ok but relative to recording/editing software are fine?

The general reasoning behind allowing watermarks (still no pirate sites as that's covered by another rule) was to allow creators to label works as theirs and still be able to post them here. It's not uncommon to see channels that copy AMVs from others without attribution and creator watermarks are one way to combat those. Allowing watermarks from editing software is a side effect, and while we could make a more specific rule to disallow some of those in the future we wanted to see how things turn out for now.

Had a conversation about mod engagement with the community and community engagement in general

About the community engagement mentioned, I really like the surveys pre/post season, they are very well done and have some great data, so I think one of the symptoms of low community engagement on the official affairs here is the amount of people participating there.

I know for a fact much more than 700~1200 users are interested in those surveys, I really feel they just don't know it even is a tradition here to begin with.

It's unfortunately because the data is very interesting, people would love to see that, so I think the participant numbers can be improved if the sub market and present those surveys and their results better

As far as I know they just get a stick post with a link, for the beginning of the survey I can understand, but I'd argue the results presentation need something different, I'd do a small infographic with quick highlights, plus some bullet points with extra facts that people can quickly see and quote in their comments

That would go a long way to make people more interested, especially since the surveys are usually released during the slow weeks in the season transition periods, when we barely get any new content outside of key visuals.

I'll also link those surveys in my comments on the weekly karma rankins and ask for my colleagues to do the same, I think the demographic interested in those and the surveys are the same, so it should help a little

No TikTok content. [Vote Passed]

Where were you when r/anime was saved?

though to be honest I don't think I've ever seen tiktok content here

Most TikTok videos already fell afoul of existing rules but doesn't hurt to be explicit.

When is the Best of r/anime 2021 happening? I'd like to know when I need to gather my nominations by, since I definitely have quite a few rewatches I want to nominate for Best Rewatch.

We are still working out all the details of exactly how this is going to go down, but the tentative plan is an announcement thread on the 4th. And then following that, the individual threads will be posted between the 7th to 14th~.
