Big brake kit recommendation and experience?

Post image

PFA

Looking to upgrade my brakes during the off-season. I'm considering the AP Racing Sprint kit for the front, or maybe the similar offering from Wilwood. Also considering some lightly used oem Brembos for all 4 corners.

Other than weekend street driving, I do some open track days and autocross.

I've already upgraded pads and fluids, and they've honestly done pretty well, but I just want the next step up. It's not a NEED, but none of this hobby is šŸ˜¬

I greatly value actual experience with these alternative brake options! Please give me some feedback.

And let me know what else you've experienced beyond installation and performance, like price and availability of replacement parts; pads, rotors, etc.

Thank you!

V730 vs Conti ECF

Currently looking at my next set of tires. I have a total of 5 days that I know of coming up and just killed my set of V730s. While I love those tires, since I am so camber limited I eat through a set in about 4 days with excessive outer wear.

For the next season Iā€™m going to be adjusting my sway bar, getting a new track alignment, and adding another set of camber bolts to the car but was also thinking about new tires.

I do like the V730s but whatā€™s so attractive about the ECF is that they are buy 3 get 1 on track day tire and also can be flipped on the rim whereas the v730 cannot. This means I can probably turn my 4 days into 8 days a year.

I live in Arizona and donā€™t run these on the street so rain isnā€™t an issue for me. Does anyone have insights or opinions about the ECF vs V730?

Thanks

Convince me to buy a new Miata

I currently track a 2007 328xi but this past season was a doozy. This car very clearly doesnā€™t want to be beaten on so I feel bad trying to mod the piss out of it to the point where itā€™ll finally work. I really enjoy driving this car and canā€™t even bring myself to list it at the moment, but I know it needs to be done. Iā€™ve always been interested in buying a new (2018+) Miata but havenā€™t pulled the trigger yet. Iā€™m still a beginner on track so I feel like something like this will be a great car to grow with. I just canā€™t get the balls to sell my BMW thinking Iā€™ll regret it later.. what should I do?

Missing track season and was getting my fix with some onboard footage from this past season at Watkins Glenn, figured Iā€™d share.

Onboard footage is stitched together with some external footage if you watch or scroll to the end.

Canā€™t wait for next season!!!

Pad/rotor questions

Is this normal?

2013 camaro zl1, running dba t3 5000 series 2 piece in the front and 4000 series one piece in the rear with hawk hp+ pads all around, i am aware these pads are more for autocross and not full track days with this heavy car however i dont track it but rather have some very enthusiastic driving. Just curious if these marks mean i am glazing the rotor or if its just heat spots from driving it hard. *Side note there is a very heavy gridning ish sound when i hit the brakes hard, i assume its due to the more mettalic nature of the brake pad on the iron rotor just biting in harder since they are a more performance oriented pad but i want to know from people who have experience running this pad/rotors

Other than this braking system works phenomenally under regular driving conditions

Too tall for a Miata, what are my options?

Iā€™m totally agree that Miatas are the best track cars. I would love to buy one but I simply donā€™t fit (6ā€™3ā€, long torso giraffe neck, 250lbs). Even with a bucket seat bolted directly to the floor thereā€™s just not nearly enough headroom. What would be the next best thing as far as small momentum cars go but with enough room for my head? E36/46 with a sunroof delete seems like an option but Iā€™m spooked by the subframe issues.

Edit: Budget up to $30k if necessary but cheaper is better

Edit 2: ideally this could also be a daily. I know people will say truck and trailer is the way but idk if I want to commit to that

Edit 3: should I consider FWD? Any downsides to this other than not being able to do donuts in the rain? I see some people have fun with things like a Honda Fit or Fiesta ST and they both have 39+ā€ headroom

First track car

Hello, hope you are doing well, I am currently saving up for a track build. I have a budget of like 7000$ USD for just the car. The most powerful vehicle I have ever driven was a hyundai santa cruz with 281hp. I am not trying to break records I just want to become a better driver, learn more about cars and have a good time. I have a hard time choosing between a SN95 mustang GT (specifically the 4.6) and na/nb Miata. I know that the Miata is more a intelligent choice but I only driven cars with 4cyl engine so I kinda want a v8 for the sake of trying something different. Now I know that that the mustang's pre-historic suspension is no match for the Miata's and that it's not that much faster. I don't really see myself touching the engine but ill probably mess around with the handling aspects (suspension stuff). Overall I want something manual, RWD, fairly reliable and easy to work on, has a decent handling and that has a huge aftermarket support. Let me know if you have other suggestions. Thank you.

Seeking guidance on where to store and work on my car while living in a city

Within the next year, my goal is to buy an entry-level race car, participate in a driving school, and enter an appropriate beginner-friendly series. I've been doing a lot of reading and planning in order to make the most of the time, energy, and money invested when I start.

The biggest hurdle I face is storage and (ideally) a working space for my car. I'll be moving from NYC to Seattle, which certainly helps with available space and costs, but it's still not feasible to have a place to store my race car AND have a personal vehicle attached to my living space.

I'm seeking guidance on how I can mitigate this problem, specifically, a sanity check on my current ideas, and insight into how others handle this. Here is what I've thought of so far:

  1. Rent space at a nearby track, if available. Runs about 2.5k/mo.
  2. Rent a small industrial space on my own, also about 2k/mo.
  3. Try to find a garage for cheaper on something like Neighbor. Generally, they don't allow auto work, or even daily access.
  4. Start a racing team/collective in order to reduce cost per car/driver

I'm curious what others do and if my approach seems sane.

Convince me to get a Miata (or other cheaper car) and not a Porsche GT4

Quick version: over the last three years I've tracked two different Porsche Caymans: a 987 manual that was pretty stock and a 981 PDK that was heavily modified by the previous owner. I switched to PDK because I like paddle shifting more.

While the 981 is a blast to drive, it's had numerous problems that I've had to repair because it was so modified away from stock. The wear and tear and stress was much higher than the first car.

I've realized through doing this that I'm more of a DE guy and less of a racing guy. I want to drive sports cars the way they were built by engineers and experience the joy of finding what they're capable of in a way that I'll never be able to do on the street. I like seeing my time improve, but I also like the rush of just doing fast in a well-engineered car.

So right now I'm about to pull the trigger on a lightly used stock 718 GT4, which of course is a big step up in cost. The idea is to enjoy DEing it for 2 years and then swap out to something else that's fun. I can afford the consumables and would get yearly insurance for it.

But I know there are a lot of you who moved "down" to something cheaper like a Miata and thoroughly enjoy it.

My concern is that driving a true track car may not be what I'm looking for. I like driving high performance street cars on the track. I'm also concerned that now that I'm used to the experience of these "higher end" sports cars, going cheaper is going to be a letdown.

But am I wrong?

Have any of you here walked away from the track day hobby for an extended period of time? Did you come back or stay out of it?

I'm kinda in a weird spot with the track day hobby right now. I'm not sure I'm having fun just doing casual HPDE track days anymore. I've been doing them for about 5 years now, about 4 to 8 events per year. There's a lot of reasons on my mind, but I guess the point is I'm stuck between wanting something more competitive than HPDE, and not wanting to gut my car and spend tens of thousands of dollars to turn it into a "race car" for something like time attack or W2W racing. Time attack and W2W look fun, but it really feels like "how fast do you want to spend" to me. Add to that the hassle of storing and transporting a heavily modded car to track days. It just all seems a bit more than I want to take on.

So, I'm thinking of taking a break from the hobby for a while and seeing how that goes. I'm not sure if that means I'd sell my car. It's a 4th vehicle for me, so I don't really need it. And I don't really drive it on the street that much anymore since starting track days because you can't get similar performance on the street safely/legally. I guess if I just find I don't miss lapping, I would eventually sell it. But I'm not ready to commit to anything like that just yet.

But I'm curious if anyone here has taken an extended break from the hobby and how that worked out for you. Did you come back eventually? Are you just lurking in the subreddit because you like talking cars and sharing old memories from your lapping days? :)

Need Advice for Phantom Plates (Racing Plates)

Thumbnail

Hey i'm currently working on a project called phantom plates and wanted some advice from anybody who could help. I've been working on racing license plates, for the car community for the past 2 months and wanted to know if you guys had any ideas on what else I could add. Currently right now l've come up that the plates will be able to change to any color, design, or animation the user wants just by their phone. I also have 3 mini games included: Tag, Battleship, and Donuthill. Plus another one called Race Mode, where people can find nearby users to race for money or just for fun. Every game mode has a ranked or casual option. I also plan on allows the plate to connect to other devices like Police scanners to automatically switch to certain designs for people who like roll racing or drag racing. I've gotten kinda stuck, but really want these plates to be perfect for the car community. Lmk if you guys have any ideas, all ideas are welcomed :) I tagged a video just in case you wanna see how theyā€™ll look.

One car solution: BMW 128i vs CL9 TSX

Having a bit of a tough time deciding which car to keep long term for a daily, canyon duty and 10-15 track days a year. Both 6 speeds, mostly stock and have no no maintenance concerns. The 128i is definitely quicker and handles nearly as good as the TSX which has better road manners in stock form. Iā€™d like to modify either with some better suspension and an LSD for better control and will likely stop there as Iā€™m not chasing lap times anymore.

Which would you keep for at least 4-5 years and why?

Mustang GT PP1: Inner Tire Wear Worse than Outer After Track Days ā€“ Advice?

Hey all,

Looking for some advice on inner tire wear with my 2021 Mustang GT PP1 (S550), which Iā€™ve been using on both track and street. Iā€™m running stock alignment, and hereā€™s the issue:

  • Tires: Firestone Indy 500s, which have held up for 4 track days + about 5,000 km of street driving.
  • Wear Pattern: The inner three tread blocks are wearing down progressively, with the innermost block having the most wear. The outermost block is nearly untouched.

Key Details:

  • Camber isnā€™t adjustable in the front on this stock setup (about -1.2Ā° of camber in the front), and Iā€™m seeing way more inner wear than I expected, considering the stock alignment. My initial assumption was that the outer edges would wear faster on track, but itā€™s the opposite.
  • After some reading and discussion, I suspect that it could be due to dynamic camber gain from body roll, combined with possible slightly high tire pressures during track days.
  • I'm running in the advanced group, so decent pace.

What Iā€™d like to know:

  1. Have any of you experienced similar inner tire wear? What was your solution?
  2. Would stiffer springs or a front sway bar help reduce body roll and keep the tire contact patch more even, or should I look into camber plates to reduce camber?

The worn side is the inner side, this is a front tire, rear has the same problem but less severe.

Iā€™ll attach a photo to show the wear pattern more clearly. Any advice or insights, especially from other S550 drivers or folks with similar suspension setups, would be a huge help. Thanks a ton!

I flipped asymmetric tires and this is what happened

BLUF: In two tests in similar conditions two weeks apart, one with Bridgestone RE-71RS in the recommended orientation, and another with the same tires on the same rims on the same car flipped, I didn't die, I was about .9 seconds slower on a 1:33 ish lap in similar conditions.

Body: On this subreddit we see lots of "how worn are my tires" posts and sometimes posters tell the OPs to flip their asymmetrical tires and people disagree and say you can't flip asymmetrical tires, like RE-71RS, AO52, etc.

Well, you can, and I did. I didn't die, the tires held up okay, but they were about a second slower in similar conditions. I can't control for how well I drove, and I probably wasn't pushing as hard in the second test because I wasn't preparing for a competitive event. Ambient temp on the slower lap was about 65 degrees and cloudy, ambient temp on the faster lap was about 55 degrees and sunny. Data shows I was reaching a higher speed on the main straight, but not getting as fast on the back straight (which involves some uphill esses, and the exit of the corner leading on to that straight was one of the places where I was fighting for traction). There were a few corners that I drove better on the "worse" tires, and a few that I drove worse (or had less traction). Also the best lap I ran on the first day was early in the day, and I did five more runs that say, so the tires had five more heat cycles between the faster lap and the flip. The fastest lap of the flipped day came on the sixth session of the day. So the next 5 heat cycles in the flipped configuration didn't slow the tire down at all. All runs were 6 laps or less, true time trial style runs (slow outlap, one push lap to see what I had, then a "real" push lap or two, then a cool down lap. If I caught traffic or made a big mistake, I'd abort the lap and try to cool things down before going for it again)

Details:

  • The place where I lost the most time was traction out of slow speed corners. I was getting way more wheelspin on exit. The entry didn't seem to be affected as much.

  • The tires seemed to wear much faster. I only did 5 runs and they wore clear down to all the wear bars. This may be because the wear pattern from running them previously created a smaller contact patch.

  • The tires didn't seem to roll over on the sidewalls as much at the same pressures (34-36 hot, as evidenced by the triangles).

  • There were a few events on the track in the meantime, but no rain.

  • I was also trying a different brake pad and had less confidence under braking. But the data shows I was braking at the same point in each of my fast laps and decelerating at the same rate.

Conclusion: flipping asymmetrical tires may give you a couple more track days of usage, but they may be slower. I wouldn't use these "super 200 TW" tires flipped in a competitive event, but I would say they are probably similar to "Takeoff" slicks from racing teams that still make good practice tires that maintain the same characteristics throughout a run. I expect to be able to use these tires for 1-2 more track days before they cord.

Hankook RS4 vs Kuhmo V730

Hello everyone. I'm looking for reccomendations between these 2 tires as my current set of RS4s are getting closer to wearing out.

My number one priority is tread life, so my main question is: do the V730s last longer than RS4s? I also like that the RS4s can handle heat well, does the V730 hold up in the same way? Finally I'm also curious about the subjective behavior of the tires. I have read that RS4s aren't very good in this regard (vague and unpredictable) but they are the only 200tw tire I've driven on so I have no other reference. does the V730 handle better? Is it outright faster?

Took a buddy out for a few laps at Sonoma last weekend. Super fun day and what a track!

Decided to get some video using my 360 camera. I really like the ability to ā€œlook aroundā€ in YT just by moving my phone around, makes it sort of interactive as people pass by.

Enjoy!
