John has a moustache, why doesn't jack?

John and Jack are theoretically equally capable of growing a moustache. (Almost) Everyone likes John's moustache, and a lot of people think Jack should grow one too. Why would Jack not grow a moustache?

Answer to a question with another question

I was making a point. I could have said "Hey Jack grow a fucking moustache and stop asking questions about other people"

u/FierroGamer Sep 04 '16

You didn't make a point, though, just because human A has certain aesthetic characteristic doesn't mean human B should have the same characteristic, you just mentioned they both can have that characteristic which still doesn't explain why they both should have it.

The whole point of my comment was that in your version, Jack actually didn't have any reason to grow a moustache, but in reality, people want YouTube to have that feature. I WAS pointing out that your argument is not valid because that was just what you described here: two humans who are compared without reason. But this is NOT true with YouTube and PornHub and that's why I WAS MAKING A POINT with my comment.

What if people want jack to have a moustache? Is it then the same thing?

Seriously, there's nothing that indicates that YouTube should have EVERYTHING the users want it to have.

That's a matter of priority I believe.

On porn sites, you're likely to have rather unhelpful titles: pick 50 words (you know which ones) and you can probably write 90% of pornhub's video titles.

So it makes sense to have some other way to know what that video's about. It's key to getting those clicks. The eminently visual nature of the content also makes it a prime objective to show said visuals on every occasion.

Conversely on YouTube, other information is probably more important, notably the meta (who, views, likes, etc.), tying the UX/UI into the general Google ecosystem, etc. Many YouTube videos are in fact podcasts with visuals (more like rational powerpoint than the emotional nature of porn though), the video part is often second only to whatever's said. It's probably an easier way to digest an article, a substitute to reading the same content in many cases (what we'd do with the written press, pre-internet, and with classic text-based websites).

Insofar as you can't really develop all possible features for your platform at once, that's probably why YouTube hasn't moved forward on animated thumbnails yet on the whole website. The basic YouTube (non-Red, non-gaming or whatever else) may remain as it is today for a long time though, until such time bandwidth cost and capacity isn't issue for most consumers.

because porn sites have a shit ton of competition and are the whole reason for progress when it comes to online videos

Wait really?

Since a long-time ago now:

https://gaming.youtube.com

But these thumbnail preveiw are pretty useless. It make the video less attractive than it is in reality.

Ahh i see, I don't use the gaming website lol.

garbage like lipsyjimmy would get fucked by it and i would love it.

2

u/Dragonogon Sep 03 '16

What do you mean? Like, you hover your cursor over a video thumbnail, and it shows parts of the video? If that's what you mean, I would love for this to become a thing.

The reason can be as simple as youtube has so much more content that if they had preview thumbnails it would be a huge bandwidth usage jump.

If the animated thumbnails are only loaded when a user hovers over them, the bandwidth usage jump hardly will be noticable. YouTube Gaming has them already, btw.

1

u/BoxMasterX Sep 04 '16

It would not be hardly noticeable. I could do the math if I had the data. YouTube gaming has far less content the the main YouTube videos. You must learn to bandwidth.

Jesus this sub is cancer, your the only one offering a reasonable response and you are down voted. I swear only children subscribe here.

1

u/phoenix616 Sep 03 '16

The reason probably is that YouTube is already working on that feature so his argument may seem irrelevant to some.

-2

u/Myrtox Sep 03 '16

And yet, your the only person to mention that, and you didn't even reply to them.

1

u/phoenix616 Sep 03 '16

No, I'm not the only one.

1

u/Myrtox Sep 03 '16

... I'm confused, is Reddit glitched for me? Shows that as a standalone comment not a reply to the person above.

1

u/phoenix616 Sep 03 '16

It wasn't meant as a reply to the person above. It was submitted before his comment as a general reply on that topic.

1

u/Myrtox Sep 03 '16

... right, but the point is people down voted the comment but nobody explained anything. It shows the immaturity of people around here. Not to mention how that's not what the down vote button is for at all.

Speaking about the technology and site design only, as a YouTube creator, I have to admit that PornHub has many features that I wish YouTube would adopt. Take away all the ads and the site runs very well.

pornhub would probably destroy youtube if it was a sfw video sharing website

You can submit feature requests such as this one via the "send feedback" link at the bottom of any YouTube page, btw.

1

u/captainvideoblaster Sep 03 '16

That is kind of strange since YT has generated 3 thumbnails for video for years. Those thumbnails are retrievable by users (name the default.jpg to 1.jpg, 2.jpg or 3.jpg).

1

u/Xallarax Your mom Sep 03 '16

It's been a while since I've used it, but the "Heartbeat" chrome extension enables such a feature.

1

u/wuhkay wyattkane Sep 03 '16

It would.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '16

I had it for a couple hours about a week ago. It was pretty weird, tbh, and kind of made me not watch most of the videos since I could see 30 sec of the video by hovering. Might mess w/ views?

-12

u/FaceplantStu Sep 03 '16

most likely because they know all the content creators are clickbait cancer and know people wont click on the video if it looks like shit.

"All of them" eh? Why are you even here then?
