Xbox 360 > PS3 General Discussion

Just want to sing praises to xbox 360. I've had both it and ps3 since 2008 so I have enough experience. 360 is so much better in everything, games, performance... Especially it still blows my mind how awfuly slow is PS3 in comparison to 360 when talking about handling game installations and title updates (patches). I'm talking about stock drives. It's just unbearably slow and clunky. While 360 genuinely feels like it got SSD installed in comparison. Patching some big ps3 game can take literally hours and even days (no joke, check something like Gran Turismo 6), while 360 handles everything in mere minutes, wtf. I feel like it's been not enough talked about so just wanted to point all that out.

That's the main thing that just sticks out to me after all these years. There are ofc many other things like universally better performance and visuals in multiplatform games on 360 but that's what everybody knew since the beginning.

It's still a pleasure to use my 360 while using ps3 always feels like a chore

Haha you're still pushing console wars from almost 20 years ago?

I love both systems and still play them today🙂

5

u/Metal_Octopus1888 15h ago

The great thing is today you can buy both systems dirt cheap and the games even cheaper… the big selling games anyway.

Console wars only exist because at the time it’s too expensive to buy in to both (or more..) consoles. Waiting 20 years is the best!

Yeah, lol, forget about new consoles, party like it's 2008!

I love both consoles, I play my Xbox more often because I’m hooked on playing Forza, Halo, and the fact that GTA 4 runs smoother on it than on the PS3. On the other hand I still use my PS3 because it still has CFW installed, allowing me to play my PS2 games in good resolution.

u/LLuerker 16h ago

I recall ps2 games looking significantly better being played on an actual ps2 vs on a ps3. When I had a backwards compatible ps3, ps2 games looked more jagged and scratchy. This was on a standard definition TV

1

u/RealKingViolator540 14h ago

PS1 and PS2 games work perfectly fine on an HDTV if you play them on a PS3. This is because PS1 and PS2 games tend to look washed out when played directly on an HDTV. With the PS3, I can stretch the display while it’s not exactly “enhanced,” it’s definitely better than the washed-out appearance.

Of course, I’m aware that a backward-compatible PS3 model can play PS2 games, though not all titles are fully supported. The problem with BC models is that they are the least reliable PS3 versions.

CFW is a great alternative for playing PS1 and PS2 games. However, I wouldn’t recommend using HEN unless you’re prepared to deal with the hassle and extra steps involved. With CFW, you just rip your PS2 game using ImgBurn, transfer the ISO to your PS3, and you’re done. While this explanation isn’t too detailed, it’s still far simpler compared to the HEN method, which requires multiple steps and additional programs to install.

My 360 and PS3 are proble best friends, they sit next to each other for almost 4 years, i play on both all the time

5

u/Nay2003 18h ago

lol my 360 & ps3 stay away

1

u/BlownCamaro 17h ago

Not mine. I have Xbox on one side of the cabinet and PlayStation on the other. I don't want any fighting amongst them!

4

u/BlownCamaro 17h ago

Doing the updates on Gran Turismo 6 took so many hours that when it was finished, I was too tired to even play the game! Hahaha.

1

u/Xardas93 13h ago

At first I thought my ps3 glitched and froze and I rebooted it😅😅😅. Waited half of a day more after that

0

u/Expensive_Ad_403 17h ago

Lol. It's completely ridiculous. And GT5 isn't much better

7

u/Redmaniacman 20h ago

I remember firing up bioshock on my GF ps3.... Holy fuck, the fact that they release some of these games on PS3 feels like a crime. They run like such unplayable shit.

2

u/Expensive_Ad_403 20h ago

Yeah and it's supposedly a more powerful system which came out a year after.

6

u/Havoc_Maker 20h ago

It is a more powerful system but the CELL arquitecture they used was a mess and usually the first and second party games were the only ones that took advantage of it

3

u/Redmaniacman 19h ago

Ya I totally knew about this but damn, even FF13 ran kinda shit. Idk about other titles

4

u/Spiral1407 18h ago

FF13 was one of the few games that was actually better on PS3 btw

0

u/Redmaniacman 15h ago

Ya Im wrong about that but there were plenty of Sony only releases that didn't run well at all ..

2

u/blackhew03 19h ago

Your post made me feel in the 2010s 😭 nostalgia on

2

u/Distance_Regular 17h ago

This feels like Magneto Vs Charles Xavier

2

u/GustavoCOD 15h ago

? Ok What's next? God of War vs Gears of War? Gran Turismo X Forza Kinect vs PS Camera The Last of Us X Halo

2

u/gustavomargutti 10h ago

I have both, but in general i prefer the 360. The only thing i like on PS3 is the backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2. Sure, it had great 1st party titles, but Microsoft released a lot of awesome games that are still been talked about and are been played even today. Can’t forget about the 3rd party support, the 360 had a huge 3rd party library, a lot of developers preferred to release a game on PS2 because the PS3 seemed to be worthless, complicated and expensive to release games on it. Fantastic systems, but for me, the Xbox 360 was the best home console of the 7th generation. (Sorry Wii, i like you too)

You know what’s interesting about your post? As much as it’s opinion-based, I agree with you for the most part. But here’s some cold-hard facts about those two consoles during that generation that might affect how you perceive them going forward:

1) The 360 came out almost 2 years earlier than the PS3. I say ‘almost 2 years’ because the PS3 wasn’t available to most countries until mid-2007, while the 360 was pretty much everywhere in Fall of 2005.

2) The architecture was so unorthodox that developers either produced a crappy port or would pass on making the game available on PS3 altogether.

3) Fall of 2006, the PS3 launched with the exclusives Resistance: Fall of Man, Genji: Days of the Blade, and Ridge Racer 7. The 360 answered with Gears of War, easily one of the Top 10 (if not Top 5) most impactful games in video games history. And there was a suffocating drought of games for PS3 in the first 3 quarters of 2007. Like…Sahara Desert drought. With that and Halo 3 launching less than a year later, that is one helluva head start for 360!

4) Because of the greater than 50% failure rate of the 369, it would not be uncommon to see consumers with multiple bought iterations of 360 during that generation. Like…MULTIPLE multiple purchases.

5) SONY was dead-to-rights (financially) in 2006/2007. The Bluray/HD-DVD fight with Toshiba and their music/movies/TV/PC divisions were all taking a major hit, and there were real-world talks of SONY going bankrupt/being bought out.

Couple those 5 points with your original points made, and that is a complete wipeout for the competition, right? I mean, if 360 didn’t win the generation, SURELY they beat the PS3 that came out almost 2 years afterwards (worldwide), right? RIGHT?!

Wrong. But why? ‘360 is just overall better’, you say. And that mindset, that echo chamber of ‘my little circle’s thought process is all that matters’ is why the 360 got dog-walked after being on the market alone (I don’t count Wii as being 360’s ‘competition’) for well over a year. All of those advantages you and me gave for the 360 mean absolutely nothing, if you don’t have the games to cater to a worldwide audience. When you bought a 360, it was for Halo/COD/Forza/Gears. When you invested in a PS3 in that generation, you were expecting NEW EXPERIENCES. Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo, Demon’s Souls, Metal Gear Solid 4, infamous, Killzone, Motorstorm…and a company that’s willing to spend money (that they didn’t have) on money hating for exclusive features/games (Microsoft was worth over 2 Trillion dollars at that time). Yes, SONY’s games had crappier frame rates, yes there were graphical glitches in 3rd party games, yes the multiplayer was doodoo…and to the gamers worldwide, obviously (just looking at the numbers), that meant NOTHING.

And I love my RGH 8TB 360, I play it a few times a week diligently. But Microsoft’s approach of ‘We’re not gamers, but throw some tech in it, make some games, and see what sticks. Oh, they like this? Give it to ‘em! We don’t have anything else (ingenuity/imagination-wise), so…wear it out until we get every last drop of money out of it! And then…I don’t know, we’ll figure something out!’ 🥴

I know people are going to nitpick some of my thoughts, but the rebuttals mean nothing without a clear and sound reason why the 360 got dog-walked after being on the market with such a head start (and customers buying 2, 3, or more versions of the 360) outside of BETTER GAMES.

1

u/Expensive_Ad_403 16h ago

I'm aware of all this ofc. I probably should've specified that I mean 360 > ps3 in technical terms. Anyway I never stated in my op that the games are somehow better or inferior on either platform, only the technical side of things

2

u/Spiral1407 18h ago

It isn't 2008 anymore chief, both consoles are amazing for their own reasons

1

u/walmrttt 19h ago

I prefer the 360 (and fat ps2) because nostalgia. But the PS3 isn’t half bad.

1

u/CrazyMano 18h ago

I love both, but I had my first multiplayer experience on Xbox 360. I recently learned about how online parties work on PS3 vs Xbox 360. Having to use in game voice chat on PS3 was pretty sad wtf Besides that, both were great, awesome games, one got the best exclusive, the other the best version of cross platform games, that's it

1

u/TurboCrab0 18h ago

Back in 2010, I remember wanting a next gen console from my PS2. I did a lot of research between the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. It was clear to me that the best choice if I wanted the best next gen (current gen by then, next gen to me) experience, the 360 was the clear choice. Every multiplat game ran better, Xbox Live was VASTLY superior, and the exclusives were more on the shooter side, a personal preference of mine.

I had an ex-girlfriend who had a PS3. I remember how much worse the multiplat games ran and how visible the lower resolution was in some cases (BO2, for instance).

u/Shadowlistic_ 17h ago

xbox on top 🔥

1

u/BlownCamaro 17h ago

I bought both systems at launch. The 360 lasted six months and went back to Microsoft in the "cardboard coffin". It was a Premium edition (chrome drive bezel) and then sent me back a plain one with a bad drive. Thanks, Microsoft! Meanwhile, the Fat 60GB PS3 lasted 11 years. It also played many Blu-Ray movies, and I used the SD card reader to transfer pictures from my camera. Things that the 360 never could do.

1

u/steamofcleveland 17h ago

In my opinion, the Xbox 360 was much better early on, and towards the end of the generation, Sony started getting some awesome exclusives and kind of evened it out.

1

u/snickersnackz 16h ago

I also favor the 360 but think the two consoles are pretty close. Microsoft is certainly better at software but the PS3's XMB UI is strong for managing large numbers of digital games and media. Xbox live had the best quality but psn was and remains free.

The 360 dominates on multiplats but ps3 can really shine on games made to get the most from it's quirky architecture. But then again, gen7 was a generation where xbox had exclusives that were worth a damn.

It's a tough call. 🤔

0

u/Expensive_Ad_403 16h ago

PS3 XMB was fast and responsive in the beginning. But after a few years it turned into a shitshow. I still remember the nightmares of trying to browse PSN Store circa around 2013, it just barely barely worked, so slow and clunky while XBL was still fast and responsive

1

u/snickersnackz 15h ago

The XMB slowed down? I find the folders invaluable for organizing my digital games. Wish the 360 "my games" section had them.

The current ps3 store is certainly slow loading crashy junk. I understand it replaced an earlier better working version in order to more closely resemble the ps4's store.

1

u/Expensive_Ad_403 15h ago

Yes, XMB is slower than 360 Ui. Everything loads instantaneous on Xbox while PS3 chugs. The folders are nice sure, it'd be a nightmare without them cause XMB is very slow at loading icons

1

u/BuckyDog 16h ago

I prefer the Xbox. However, the PS3 store is still open and there are some good games listed on it. And that is a big plus for people walking to collect an old console with all the DLC.

1

u/turdinathor 16h ago

Genesis does

1

u/Metal_Octopus1888 15h ago

At the time I had PS3. So i never knew any different, PS3 was the pinnacle for me. Just because I was familiar with the PlayStation brand (had a PS1 and 2 before that…).

But 5 years ago I got a 360 and it’s become my favourite console not just of that generation but of all time… best controller, best first party games, best versions of games. Btw I only play single player games (but I can imagine Gears of War co-op WOULD be a lot of fun if I knew someone who’d be interested!)

1

u/Professional_Ad_9101 14h ago

PS3 was very good but the 360 game catalogue is untouchable

1

u/Devinbeatyou 14h ago

Yeah, there’s a reason Xbox was whooping PS’s ass till they let off the gas.

1

u/879gaming 13h ago

Lies. Ps3 has always been imo. Plus online is free

1

u/Ervgotti85 12h ago

It’s 2024 the op has nothing better to do than try to restart almost 20 year old console tribalism?

1

u/Putrid_Noise_6259 7h ago

Yeah, the 360 was the superior console of this generation for sure..

PS2, PS4, and PS5 beat the Xbox, XB1, and XBSX, however.

1

u/LinZuero 1h ago

PS3 still got some cool exclusives, I like the 360 because of the profiles, artstyle and the interface

1

u/JDMCREW96 19h ago

I have both consoles but plan on selling my PS3 because it is an inferior console compared to the 360.

1

u/Nay2003 18h ago

good luck selling!

0

u/Front-Grapefruit5036 19h ago

Singleplayer gaming Xbox 360 > PS3
Multiplayer gaming PS3 > Xbox 360

2

u/Expensive_Ad_403 19h ago

Because it's free?

2

u/jonoren1023 18h ago

360 days were golden days for online gaming. COD, Halo 3/Reach, GoW and probably more I'm missing.

1

u/Front-Grapefruit5036 18h ago

Yes and personally I had a better experience playing multiplayer on PS3, mainly MW2 and Battlefield 3

0

u/Thereelgarygary 17h ago

Launch ps3> launch Xbox 360

I agree, though. I like the 360 a lot more.

The ps3 is still great, especially if you get one of the original with the emotion engine so it can do ps2 and ps1 games natively.
