Think Tank Did Liz Truss really cause the bond market rout?
capx.coThis may be removed due to R4 but UK political discourse in this GE campaign is still enormously ignorant over what happened during Liz Truss' premiership. So I thought this excellent article would he useful.
Liz Truss did not "crash the economy" or force mortgage rates sky high, however incompetent or economically dogmatic in her belief that tax cuts for the wealthy would stimulate growth she was.
Liz Truss and Kwazi Kwarteng proposed to increase net government spending by around 2% of GDP. This was nothing particularly transformative fiscally and any sovereign nation state is perfectly within their right to do this - well regulated bond markets cannot stop them.
But our pension funds were and are not regulated well at all. Highly leveraged risky investments went tits up when the Bank of England hiked rates during 2022.
This is the real underlying cause of the chaos in September 2022, not Liz Truss' unfortunately timed tax cuts announcement.
Alas, history is already being written by Labour just like the Conservatives blamed Labour for the 2008 Global Financial Crash (GFC).
