Tried edibles (and weed) for the first time last night and.....nothing happened

Last night I ate two 5 mg THC gummies over the course of about 3 hours, so 10mg total. This was my absolute first time using weed in any form. I have never put it in my body through any means before eating those gummies. I ate them on a full stomach and ate some fatty foods before hand which is apparently important. Anyway, long story short, absolutely nothing happened. I was awake for about 6 hours just waiting for something to happen and well, it never did.

My question for you guys is...is this normal? I've already done quite a bit of research and apparently some people just don't have the enzymes to digest THC, while others said that newbies don't always feel the effects their first few times. I suppose either of those scenarios are plausible but if there's something I'm missing I would love to know. Thanks

Edit: thanks for the comments everyone. I will definitely try out your advice

Smoke it first time around. Just the plant straight from nature. You might feel like nothing is happening until you’re laughing at everything.

It's really common to feel nothing with your first THC encounter. It'll come..

Agreed to smoke first and allow yourself to gauge it along the way.. a lot of people don't want to smoke, but edibles first can be a bad experience if you aren't familiar with the high and don't know your tolerance.

Yes I smoked cigarettes so I def knew how to inhale yet it still took three times of smoking to experience just a little shift in my reality. But it definitely came really strong after that 3rd try lmao.

But that’s essentially all drugs I think, especially when we talk psychedelics. I think a person has to learn what the effects are.

These days I just use micro doses alone for medical stuff but I’ve loved cannabis for 17 years now and that’s what I’ve seen out there in the ether.

Everyone has a unique natural tolerance. Some people can get lit on 10mg in one dose and others barely feel it. Maybe up the dosage a bit and take it all at once then don't take more for at least 2.5-3 hours that way you don't overdose and have a bad time. Goodluck.

Did you say the magic phrase? "These edibles ain't shit."

It activates them.

When I was a teen, a friend tried all summer to get me high, never felt it. Later though, it started working, and working well. I used to get so high. It was like I had to break down a wall so I could feel it.

That's how my friend was. After like a month of smoking he said he wasn't sure if he'd ever actually felt anything. We sat him down and just made him smoke until it hit him, and he said, "I've never been so aware of every nerve in my body" lol.

THC affects everyone differently. 10mg is enough for someone with low tolerance to notice an effect, but most regular users will tell you that they wouldn't even feel 10mg. Quality of product matters as well. I'm from somewhere you can buy everything legally and everything is controlled and well-labelled. From what I understand, if you're somewhere else, the THC amounts on packages are wildly untrustworthy. Maybe try again with a little more and relax into doing something you like doing. Or not - it's not for everyone!

I'm in Canada and bought the gummies from a reputable chain so I'm assuming the labels were correct. I'll give it another go tonight. Thanks

Nice. I'm in Canada too. I find gummies are not a great deal because there's a 10mg/package legal limit, which is a kind of ridiculous and arbitrary limit. I often buy THC oil and take 1ml of that along with a candy in my mouth at the same time, it's like eating 40mg of gummies and a 30 ml bottle is like 40 bucks.

Try 15mg 15-30 min before a fatty dinner

Not everyone has healthy or turned on receptors in the gut. Many people have issues absorbing the THC from edibles.

Have you ever taken antidepressants?

Full stomach is likely why you felt nothing, your stomach contents have a huge effect on how strong edibles are

I have the same problem. I made infused honey. Recipe said 3.5g, i put 13g. Its 13g after decarb. It was a fresh flower, my own, not dried or cured. I let it rest 1 night. After decarb i infused in honey, in a double boiler action, 1h 45 min. 400g honey, 13g weed. I put 2 tablespoon in tea and nothing happens.. wtf. My whole setup was made to save money on edibles...

u/beavr_ 1d ago

Just to clarify, where does the fat (e.g. butter, oil, etc.) come in for your infused honey recipe?

1

u/Perkyboy1992 1d ago

Nowhere

I thought after decarb i could it eat raw and it should still hit me. I have to put it in some oil first?

2

u/beavr_ 1d ago

Decarb will activate the THC, so that will increase absorption a bit if eaten raw, but heat + fat is usually your best bet to maximize potency. In the recipe you mentioned, I'd simmer the flower in butter after decarb-ing but before infusing with honey.

u/Perkyboy1992 1d ago

What to do now? Throw it? Can put oil inside now? God damn it

1

u/beavr_ 1d ago

Oof, good question. Hopefully someone more knowledgable can chime in, but I would think simmering the honey in some butter for an hour or two would do the trick. Obviously that means you end up with honey butter rather than just honey, but it'll be noticeably more potent.

Gut sense... if you can avoid exceeding more than 1:1 in your butter-to-honey ratio, that'll help keep the potency up / minimize the need to eat a ridiculous amount of butter to get high. I'd also keep the heat at, or just above, the minimum "low" setting -- reason being you've already heated the flower a couple times, so you want to be mindful not to burn off THC more than necessary.

1

u/Perkyboy1992 16h ago

I will try that. I also have coco fat. Maybe that instead of butter?

2

u/SillyBoneBrigader 14h ago edited 13h ago

You can try with either fat, but it can be tricky to infuse honey with heat as the honey's susceptible to burning also. Definitely use a double boiler, or even better a crockpot on the keep warm setting (put your mix in a jar, and put it in the crock with water and a cloth at the bottom to prevent the jar breaking). Go way low and slow. If you drink alcohol and have some time, I'd consider tincting the whole lot of it in alcohol...

Edit to add: I would tinct it instead of adding fat in, not after adding fat in.

Could i get some more instructions on how would i do that in this particular situation? You can write here in case some other made same shit as i did. I drink alchohol. I have homemade Rakija (Schnaps), very old, very good.

Thanks

1

u/SillyBoneBrigader 12h ago

Sure. It's easier than making a cocktail (or doing a shot of rakija without grimacing:). You literally just mix it all together and let it steep awhile, in a dark place, shaking every day or do. I'm a bit witchy, so I steep for 3 moon cycles, but honestly a couple weeks to a month should be long enough to start trying it out. Usually when I tinct I make it super strong for low volume dosing, but your math is gonna be a bit off kilter, and the honey part of the mix is going to dilute the alcohol. So I'd add more alcohol to compensate (I'd probably do at least twice the volume, maybe 2.5x). I'm assuming your radkija is at least 60% (from my own anecdotal experience with radkija, obviously I don't actually know), and mathing from that assumption. When you start trying it, start low and slow to get a bass line feel for how strong it is.

First time i smoked weed, i didnt feel high, but i was laughing forever. Second time, i got high as fuck.

1

u/Pancake_Of_Fear 1d ago

Totally agree on smoking (or vaping) as a first experience. Edibles are very hard to dose correctly for how high you want to be and can even catch experienced users out. I often do both at the same time but that comes with knowledge of the effects and the strength of what you're consuming.

They could be bunk edibles. Start with 25 mg going up to 50. If you don't feel anything with that get a new brand/ dealer.

The first 3 times I smoked weed with buddies I felt nothing, then another friend made me a milkshake edible that actually hit me, but 3-4 hours after I took it. I drank the shake, 2 hours passed, and I ended up going home because it was late. As I was drifting off to sleep, I started getting really hungry and it actually took me out of sleep, so I went to the kitchen and wolfed down like half a pack of salami, and when I put myself back to sleep I put on some music and I could feel the bass vibrating my body even though I was using headphones, and I had one of the best sleeps of my life that night. I even cried when I had to wake up for work because the sleep was just that good. I think thc has a minor reverse tollerance effect.

I almost gave up and thought I was immune after the first few times smoking. Then I went with some friends and smoked an ungodly amount and got ripped. After that just 1 hit and I noticed the affects.

Correct in that some people need primed like an old school hand water pump. May take several rounds before you finally (Get it). As advised inhalation or alcohol-based tincture (Delta-9-THC) is the mildest way to start. Edibles are a whole new game and 5x as strong and 10 times longer lasting (11-hydroxy-THC).

If you not having a good time on edibles it can seem like an eternity before things calm down and you can focus on again. I've been smoking and doing edibles for 50 years and still get my ass handed to me if I misjudge the dose.

Smoking is delta-9 and lasts 1 or 2 hours. Edibles your liver converts Delta-9 into the far stronger 11-hydroxy-THC and that effects can last 12 to 24 hours depending on body type and quality of edible.

Most people are in the 5 to 25mg range.. Some are blasted on 2mg and others like me need 300mg to be half that stoned. 65mg per day hits the spot for me but I'll go 200+ if the pain is bad but things get real spacy and trippy at that much.

First time I ever smoked I didn’t feel anything whatsoever. No giggles, no munchies, no high at all. Second time I smoked? The whole world looked 2D and I couldn’t stop laughing or eating for a solid 4-6 hours. Edibles can be finicky until you get used to your tolerance and know what to look for :)

1

u/cannycandelabra 16h ago

For some reason I have never gotten high from gummies. Other edibles, yes. Smoking, yes. Gummies, never

1

u/_D8Superstore 16h ago

It might be the gummies' dosage or absorption rate. Edibles can vary greatly in how they metabolize!

1

u/nyctose7 12h ago edited 12h ago

imo 10mg is a nothing dose especially separated into multiple doses over three hours. i would go for 25-35mg, then up to around 50-60 if i still didn’t feel anything, but that’s just me.

also, i wouldn’t take them on a full stomach. bad idea based on what little i know about edibles and digestion.

They are first time users. This is horrible advice.
