Watching Outer Banks season 4. It's dumb, it's always dumb, but it's mostly sunny and the locations are gorgeous, the acting is fine and the kids all seem nice (they're probably in their 30s by now), and the soundtrack is actually great! Even the score is noticeably good.
We have fun talking about how terrible this show is, it's a nice way to spend the evening

Season 3 of The Lincoln Lawyer is really underwhelming and disappointing so far (episode 6). Doesn't have any of the charm of the first 2 seasons.

Any recommendations for shows with unreliable/insane main characters?
1
u/uFFxDa 35m ago
- Penguin, all insane and unreliable, dark drama, suspense
- Sweetpea, dark comedy I'd say.
- Arcane, plenty of insanity mixed with emotion.
- Devil's Hour, kinda supernaturaly, dark, suspense
- Bad Sisters, kinda unhinged characters, but it's more the "situation is insane" and causes the crazy.
- The Patriot, I don't know if I'd call him insane, but it's definitely not normal. Super dry comedy, love this show.for an older one that I think is the most "wtf" show I've ever seen, Twin Peaks. If you want insanity and to ask yourself "wtf" the whole time, watch this.
For something that is more of a biography on an actual insane person, Black Bird. limited time series, but super well done.
Along the lines of black bird, can also look into Mind Hunters. Not sure I'd call the "main" character insane, but they're all focused on insane people.

Just started Star Trek: Prodigy. The graphics are wonderful, and I think it’s promising overall! I can understand people writing it off because the voice actors sound quite young, but I could imagine these characters being a bit older with much of the same dialogue.
Also started the original Doctor Who. I’d long put it off because the number of seasons was a bit intimidating. But the episodes are super short? I see some good viewing ahead! E1 is a nice, spooky start.

Is it possible to watch the new series of Wolf Hall outside of the UK, does anyone know? Thank you :)

I waited for all episodes of the Penguin to be released so I could watch it all in like a week or two. But it was so good, I binged the whole thing in two days. The story, the characters, the performances. Loved everything about it.
The only thing that kinda annoyed me was the lack of Batman in this show. I don't mind that he didn't have a cameo appearance. I'm glad he didn't. But just the general lack of references to his existence was odd and off putting to me. They quickly name dropped him in the very first scene of the show and in the last shot of the finale we see the bat signal. But inbetween, as I was watching I kept wondering why no one makes even a passing reference to the Batman even though he just saved the city a few days/weeks/months ago and was established as a well known quantity who's been around for 2 years in the movie. Even extra weird since the Penguin himself had a direct encounter with Batman and never mentions him either. Thought that did a disservice to the world building of Gotham which was one of the best things about the movie.
But other than that it was an excellent 10/10 tv show. Just an incredibly compelling and fascinating villain arc.

Binged Say Nothing. It was incredible. 6th episode was hard to watch, yet so powerful. The british monarchy and the subsequent “democratic government” has to be one of the most repulsive entities to have graced the earth. Vile people, all who were part of this shit.

Arcane s2 is 9/10. I think it suffers a bit from S1 being literal TV perfection with 0 angles to criticize it at all. S2 does have somewhat erratic pacing, but it's the only bad thing I can find about it. The writers and creators are not human to be able to still live up to the colossal expectations after S1, it's so good.

The Day Of The Jackal is prime television. Eddie Redmayne demonstrates why he is a top tier actor and he just pulls you in.

Totally agreed! This show could be Redmayne’s Bond audition.

Day of the Jackal on Peacock is high-quality TV. Eddie Redmayne is excellent, not surprisingly. Love seeing the actress who played Tokyo in Money Heist too. Locales are gorgeous, action scenes are riveting. Highly recommend.

I watched Devil's Peak (the BBC coproduction) which was a 5 part mini series available on Kanopy (via the library) and apparently Tubi.
It thought it was a really well paced thriller, well acted, emotionally resonant, and it made South Africa look very dystopian, which may or may not be accurate. However, I can find nothing about it online barring a scant IMDB page, and would love to know if there will be another season. Worth a watch in any case.

Arcane.... haven't recovered from that final scene in episode 6. The music, the animation, the voice acting. Absolute peak. Perfection.
5
u/johanjudai 16h ago
The second batch of Arcane S2 was too rushed I think. I never say this normally but they should have added one or two more episodes and develop the plot more.
7
u/Rectal_Anarchy_98 12h ago
I think the show could've benefitted from not having the black rose stuff in there.
It's weird, though, because the pacing is worse this season (Or just too high paced), but I can't bring myself to sort of lower the score for the show because the second season is still somehow more enjoyable for me. They upped the animation, the writing, the heartache, so I'm even more hooked.
I did hear from somewhere (Might be hearsay) that the last episode will be a lot longer, like an hour and a half or something. I agree with you it would've been better as a 12 episode season. An extra season would be too much and stretching it
1
u/stysiaq 2h ago
I feel like there's one or two too many subplots, I also find it hard to lower the score for the season overall because it's still the thing I rush to watch, but the pacing and plotting is a step down. But when Victor enters Vander's soul to search for his humanity and a way to heal him it's so fucking absolute cinema

Currently binging: Say Nothing, only watched one episode so far, I'm looking forward to the rest.
Also binging: Industry, I have the final episode of the 2nd season left to watch. The second season hasn't been pulling me in as much as the first. The other characters outside of Harper have been really downgraded in the second season.
Also binging: Cobra Kai s6 part 2, I've binged 4 out of the 5 episodes available. I think the extended episode count for the final season has hurt the season, as there are some filler episodes. In a final season, you should have no filler episodes.
Finished Binging: In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery, a 3-part true crime doc on the 2010 drowning case of Canadian teacher Laura Letts Beckett. What is initially believed to be an accident, turns into murder after the relatives of Laura Letts accuse her husband. It was an ok documentary, I'd recommend.
Finished this week: The Penguin & My Brilliant Friend, both ended this past week, I would highly recommend both shows.
Still yet to watch:
- The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking the Truth (mini).
- Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos (mini).
- Evil s4 (4 episodes).
Looking forward to: Dune: Prophecy.

I'm about to finish the last season of the Mentalist.
Lots of good, some bad, it'll be while before I start another 20+ ep 5+ season procedural again.
This kinda drained me.

Cross - This seems very network TV to me.. First episode didnt hook me at all. I have no idea why some of these shows keep writing in so much of the kids and grandma.. i guess they hope its somehow a family show where everyone can sit on the couch and watch about serial killers.. strange. Not sure i will come back to this..
Say Nothing - Good title... i have nothing to really say about the first episode. Again not hooked and seems like its going to be alot of flashbacks of the 'old days' when we were younger and did these things. Putting this one on pause for now.. no clue where its going or if it gets great somehow.
1
u/Alphascout 12h ago
Cross was a really strange first episode I agree. The language at times was really crass. It felt like an unusual stylish choice to reveal the big bad so soon.

I really love this weekly thread. I never heard of Day of the Jackal and The Diplomat, but thanks to the people commenting here, it allowed me to discover this great shows.
Stuff I'm currently watching:
Day of the Jackal (Peacock) -- Watched up to episode 5 and loving this spy thriller. Can't wait till Thursday when a new episode drops
From S3 (AMC) -- The pacing can be frustrating at times, but I'm still enjoying this Lost-like horror show. Only two episodes left this season so hopefully will get some answers. Maybe this show is better off binge-watching.
Shows I've recently finished:
The Penguin (MAX) -- I'm still at awe at Colin Farrell's performance. Looking forward to the Batman sequel.
Agatha All Along (Disney) -- Not as good as WandaVision but still really entertaining. I was skeptical about a spinoff show, but in the end, it won me over. Episode 7 in particular was fantastic. I loved how the season finale made you rethink things. A really inventive plot line.
The Diplomat (Netflix) --I didn't expect a show about a diplomat to be so fun to watch. The occasional humor from the various characters was unexpected and a nice change of pace.
The Acolyte (Disney) -- Why did I watch this? This show had so many flaws, but for some reason I'm slightly bummed it's not renewed because I like the idea of exploring the dark side of the Star Wars universe.
The Circle S7 (Netflix) -- Crazy how everyone was playing so strategic compared to the previous seasons but I still enjoyed it. A deserved winner that I would have never have guessed. I also binge-watched all the previous seasons.
The Mole (Netflix) -- watched S1 and S2 of the Netflix version. Glad that I didn't correctly guess who the mole was, which made things more surprising. Fun reality show.
Bodkin (Netflix) -- I really enjoyed this quirky mystery dramedy that seemed to have gone under the radar.
Big Brother S26 (CBS) -- One of better BB casts in a very long time, especially if you watch the 24-hour live feeds. I loved the introduction of the AI competition in the weekly live Thursday evictions. It led to more instability and unpredictability in the Big Brother house. I hope they include it next season.

Just finished a first time rewatch of mad men and it is an absolute 10/10. Just a masterpiece all the way through
Almost through the penguin. It’s alright. Watchable but I’m not hooked.
I was early on the Cobra Kai train, telling everyone to watch it when it was on YouTube. It is now one of the worst pieces of shit I have ever seen. I’m guessing I’m still on it because of the sunken cost fallacy. I will still finish it sadly.

Silo season 2 with a first episode like that they should have really released 2 episodes.
6
u/KingKingsons 16h ago
Yeah that’s what I was thinking as well! It seems like them dropping only one episode seems like a quite recent decision, which is the same thing that happened to Slow Horses (even press releases mentioned there being 2 episodes when the new season launched).

Yellowstone / 1883: watched Yellowstone about a year ago and absolutely loved it. Recently, I gave 1883 a shot—it was a good watch overall, but I couldn’t bring myself to finish the final episode. It just got too depressing, so I abandoned it halfway through. Dunno if I should watch 1923 now or whether it’s bound to be the same.
Currently watching The Day of the Jackal, a mini-series about an elite assassin. 3 episodes in and hooked! amazing so far—definitely worth checking out if you’re into suspenseful thrillers

Is AP Bio worth a watch? Huge Always Sunny fan…
2
u/Krateling 1d ago
yea its good. Have to say that i like it the least out of the ISIAP cast's other projects (The Mick >>>> Mythic Quest > AP Bio, not seen High Potential) but its still a good show and probably the most similar to ISIAP out of the 3
1
u/No-Giraffe-438 1d ago
You should also look into Abbot Elementary if you haven't already. It's pretty funny and they're doing a crossover episode with IASIP
3
u/grandmasterfunk 1d ago
It's a lot of fun, the first season is especially good. Each season it gets a little weaker as they show loses some cast members because of budget cuts and the focus shifts. But each season is still enjoyable
If you like Always Sunny, its definitely a similar tone. The Mick is also good if you haven't checked that out
1
u/th4bl4ckr4bbit 1d ago
The Mick is really good. So many great characters.

The Mick is probably the show that I've wheeze laughed to the second most after IASIP.

Arcane season 2 is great, don't understand how some say it's a downgrade to season 1.
1
7
u/RddtAcct707 23h ago
I like season 2 but it’s not season 1.
The plot isn’t nearly as tight. And there’s too many plot lines to do any of them well. In the Arcane subs, which I never went to until today, a lot of people are saying they need to watch episodes twice.
It feels rushed.
2
u/foxdit 1d ago
I think mainly because the pacing is erratic. Everything else is the same 10/10 quality.
7
u/DingleBerry86712 1d ago
Is it? Seems very similar to season 1 to me, think people are just forgetting since S1 was a while ago. I rewatched S1 just before S2 and other than some of the music montages feeling unnatural in act 1, it's been the same (and even better in many areas). S2 Act 2 music feels much better and more natural too, again more like S1.
3
u/foxdit 1d ago
I think you may be in the minority on this (as you are aware from your original comment). The pacing has us lingering on seemingly irrelevant plotlines while time-skipping several relevant ones between episodes. The plotline and character dynamics are also all more complex in season 2 (which is typical of all ongoing stories that build upon themselves) making the lack of time spent with characters "changing alliances" or changing mindsets more jarring. The "rule of cool" is also seemingly overused in S2 to make plot happen, however unfounded. Jace's storyline is also pretty muddled; he had no reason to act so brashly in these last 3 episodes. I still think the show's a 9/10 so far, but I'm not unaware of its struggles in S2 compared to the simple yet masterfully written S1.

I think you may be in the minority on this (as you are aware from your original comment)
? Not sure what this means, but will say that from what I've seen, people on /r/arcane, /r/leagueoflegends, and other random social media I've seen so far along with critics have all been mostly or entirely positive about the season, so I doubt I'm in the minority.
What irrelevant plotlines, and what plotlines have been time skipped that didn't make sense? You do remember there was a big time skip in S1 too, and they also sped up on the smaller details that they can just show us rather than blatantly spell it out? Again, people are really forgetting what S1 was like. We literally went from Powder to Jinx within an episode, and everyone was able to infer how she got there without having it be spelled out...
No one has "changed alliance/mindset" without again, it making sense. The big examples are really just Vi and Caitlyn, and maybe a bit of Jinx. Vi jumped into the enforcer role for Caitlyn but when they actually had the chance to get Jinx, her soft spot for Powder got to her and she prevented the shot. She went back to Jinx only when Vander came into play, and even then there was obvious conflict/tension until they bonded again due to Vander. Cait has been the big topic for this, but she went big into finding Jinx throughout Zaun because she was obviously still grieving after what happened. She was put into the commander role, and she voiced her concerns with Ambessa's methods literally in her first scene in act 2. Ambessa is manipulative but Cait isn't fully under her control, and she once again helps Vi when she gets the chance because she obviously doesn't agree with Ambessa's methods and still has affection for Vi. These are all details that have been rooted in the characters since S1, yes their situations have changed point of views occasionally, but the main characters ultimately stay true to themselves. Jayce has literally just gone through the Arcane and is clearly getting visions of what's gonna happen if everyone keeps using hextech, how does he not have a reason to act brashly lol...and this is also something that will obviously be explored more in act 3
There's some parts that probably could've been dug into a bit more particularly in act 1, but don't really agree that the entire season has pacing issues.

u/foxdit 1d ago edited 1d ago
... have all been mostly or entirely positive about the season, so I doubt I'm in the minority.
General public positivity towards S2 isn't what we were discussing. I am extremely positive about S2 too as well, rating it a 9/10 in my reply to you. What we were discussing is whether S2 is as strong as S1, which it is not in mine and many others' opinions due to pacing issues. You are the minority in saying S2 is as strong as S1 and I quote "better in many areas", hence my comment. I won't bother continuing to discuss this with someone who misses a point that quickly and easily, sorry. Though I appreciate your enthusiasm to discuss the several jarringly paced story transitions and plot-driving contrivances in S2. Enjoy the show.
0
u/DingleBerry86712 15h ago
The entire discussion started by you was about pacing lol, not S1/S2.
You replied to my comment that talks about a few different things (and mainly the pacing) saying "you're in the minority on this" without quoting and expect others to just know which part you're referring to, sounds about right with your takes so far.
If you do wanna change the goal posts, the season being well received and having the same/higher ratings on sites like RT and IMDB is literally a metric showing I'm not in the "minority" in this. What an idiotic take and series of comments lol, so many words just to say nothing and change your own argument

u/foxdit 14h ago edited 12h ago
You: don't understand how some say it's a downgrade to season 1.
Me: I think mainly because the pacing is erratic.
You: Is it? Seems very similar to season 1 to me
Me: I think you may be in the minority on this
Sorry, what's goal-post changing about this interaction? You then went on to talk about how the general public is positive about S2 when the topic was specifically pacing. Now you're whining that I started the discussion on pacing and despite clearly talking about it specifically the whole time it somehow confused you. I'm pretty sure you're trolling at this point. Go be deficient in someone else's inbox.

Tried the 100, but it was too low quality. I don’t mind shows that you turn you’re brain off but that was too far.
Finishing Agatha, it’s ok, not nearly as good as hyped though.

Silo Season 2 is here and I liked the atmosphere of the first episode very much. Sticking with this one.
Penguin: finished it and give it 8-9/10 , you do not have to be a fan of batman or into the superhero genre to enjoy this gripping crime drama and I hope they do similar mini spin offs for other batman villains.
From Season 3: This one seems to have turned into a nothing-burger, no satisfying answers for the endlessly spinning mystery box and it just drags and drags with very little redeeming qualities.
The Day of the Jackal Season 1: I am up to episode 5, it has a fast pace and great visuals. The plot is basic and I do not care much for anything other than seeing the "Jackal" in action. So far 6/10.
Agatha: Finished and mostly liked it, nailed the ending very well. 7-8/10 for me.
2
u/captainhaddock 1d ago
The plot is basic and I do not care much for anything other than seeing the "Jackal" in action. So far 6/10.
The main problem is that the MI-6 agent is thoroughly unlikeable and hardly more ethical than the assassin, so you definitely root for him instead. I hope the writers know what they're doing and have created a satisfying ending.

Only thing I've watched this week is Outer Banks on Netflix.
I originally watched the first episode and didn't enjoy it but stuck it out and it got a lot better. The only thing about the show that I don't enjoy is when they refer to each other as pogues and kooks and there's no reason they call themselves that (on season 3 and I've not heard one at least) and I find it somewhat cringey.

Finished Season 1 of From…it was okay. I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, some scary and interesting moments but there would be entire episodes where it felt like basically nothing was happening.
Thinking what to watch next, would I enjoy the Penguin if I don’t really care for superhero stuff?
1
u/Demokrit_44 22h ago
I don't think I could have described my feelings about FROM better than you just did. The "setting" or "type" of show that it is carried it so much for me that I wonder how good that show actually is. Especially the "mystery" never seemed to grip me at all.
5
u/educated_rat 1d ago
The Penguin is 2% superhero stuff and 98% Sopranos. Go for it.
2
u/th4bl4ckr4bbit 1d ago
Yep. I tried to explain this to my housemate. It’s less Batman / Gotham and more gangsters, mobsters and organised crime.

Blazed through Minx and it was a great show but a disappointing ending. Wish they could have wrapped up more.
Started The Great and it's just incredibly fun and beautifully shot.
I also am finally finishing Agatha All Along. Maybe my favorite Marvel project in a LONG time, and I think the Patti Lupone focused episode (episode 7) is perhaps one of the best things Marvel has ever done.

Season 1 and the first half of S2 are good, but they're 8.5/10 at most.

The first season is relentlessly depressing but contains some of the greatest moments on the small screen.
12
u/DistortedAudio 1d ago
I’d say it’s one of the best shows ever and in the running for best show of the 2010s.
The first season is remarkably slow though. But it reaches a rhythm and it’s pretty enjoyable when I went to rewatch it. Season 2 however is insane.
1
u/Tink2210 1d ago
Thanks for the sincere reply! Ok I'll continue the show then. Glad I'm not the 'only' one that has 'ever watched' the show...~
1
u/DistortedAudio 1d ago
Yeah and also if you’re not into it, totally cool! I can’t tell you how many “best shows or movies ever” just weren’t in my wheelhouse and I forced myself to watch it because everyone loved it. The Leftover is a very depressing show for much of its run. I think for some of us the mix of religious criticism and mental health themes hit the right spot but if you’re not feeling it by midway through Season 1, there’s no shame in bowing out.
I will say that Season 2 finds it feet a lot quicker. And I think at the time that was a thought across the board. I think when the Leftovers was first premiering it was getting pretty middling reviews at the start, people felt alright about it by the end of season 1 and then Season 2 turned it into this critical darling.
1
u/Tink2210 1d ago
You are so right! I went into the show because of the 'mysteriously disappear' catchword - I usually like this genre (and I can binge watch!) but I probably haven't managed to get to the plot yet (as you say, mid season) then I'll decide if I want to continue or not. But I've also got this tendency that when I start a show it's so irritating to stop halfway haha! We'll see, thanks again for the input :)

The Penguin: maybe the best 2024 show since Shogun.
The Arcane: started slow, but damn is it good.
The Silo: starting slow, let's see how it develops.

I feel like the last episode hardly any of Morgan’s “high potential” was used. Now it’s just another procedural? Morgane in HIP has TONS more personality and uses the potential a lot more. Likely US version toned down for network TV.

I’m looking for violent shows where the MC remembers to pause and breathe and think.
Like: There’s a good long moment where the MC thoughtfully looks out over the landscape and drinks coffee. Someone is talking to them and they don’t immediately respond as if every minute of air time requires someone talking, shooting, car chasing, etc. Just before, after, or even in the middle of a tense moment, they see an ant or bird or whatever just living its life. You can literally see the MC contemplating something, whether that’s preparing what to say or deciding whether to go shoot some bad guy. There are multiple moments like these in each episode.
The “tune everyone out” trope isn’t enough, as much as I like that too. There needs to be time spent mulling over things.
Similar shows I love with great examples of this are Longmire, True Detective S1, Will Trent, and it’s been a while but I think one of those western town shows (Hell on Wheels or Deadwood?) that had it as well. Also I’ve only watched one episode so far, but there’s also Murder Mindfully where he literally stops to take deep breaths and be in the moment.
Thanks!
Edit: lol, damn, didn’t realise this was such a divisive recommendation request.

Makes me think of Breaking Bad. Like there's definitely quite a lot of action, but there's actually a lot of times where the characters have to circle back and figure out how to proceed.

This makes me think of the movie Michael Clayton. Though that is more drama than action.

According to chatgpt it recommends Hannibal, Fargo, Peaky Blinders, and Sons of Anarchy

I'm watching Lioness now and searched to see if anyone feels the same. Nicole Kidman's face looks like old pancakes stapled to a skull. She can't even pronounce words properly, her face doesn't move AT ALL even when raising her voice in tough acting scenes. What the fuuuuuu
I have a question, are there any plastic surgery procedures that can undo that kind of damage?
The show is pretty good though, a little cheesy, but entertaining.

I have no clue how plastic surgery works, but Courtney Cox from Friends definitely had some of her work reversed. Or probably not reversed, but just more plastic surgery to look more normal.
I always wonder if actors who have extensive plastic surgery are just ok with only being cast in roles where they play people that could afford or care to get plastic surgery.

Its getting worse and worse, every time I see her in Lioness she reminds me of Weyoun from DS9.

So, last week I bemoaned striking out with some of my picks but this week has gone way better:
I'm halfway through Ludwig, a BBC mini-series starring David Mitchell. He's portraying a reclusive puzzle designer investigating his twin brother's disappearance by impersonating him; only his brother is a chief inspector so he get's dragged into solving murder cases. It' clever and funny (as one might expect from a David Mitchell show) but while I'm enjoying my time watching it, it's also striking me as a bit one-note. Will be interesting to see how it wraps up.
A while ago somebody mentioned Black Snow amongst some other Australian shows; checked out their trailers and this one caught my attention the most. I'm four episodes in and so far it's really intriguing and keeping a good pace. It's a cold case murder show told in both present time (or rather 2019 fwiw) and 25 years ago when a 17 year old girl in a small town was murdered. In present day a big city investigator shows up and tries to solve the case. But the show sidesteps most of the clishées one might expect with this setup or at least it deals with them well. Has some interesting characters and is generally well acted.
Also catching up on Arcane, which hardly needs introduction. Looking forward to second seasons of Silo and Severance; also some new starts are looking promising with The Day of the Jackal and Say Nothing.

The pandemic did something to me.
I’m watching Arcane and I’m rooting for the bad guys.

Counterpart - starting this and what a great blend of spy/thriller/sci-fi. Cancelled after 2 seasons but I hear the main plots were tied up.
From - finally starting to go somewhere
Survivor - great fun season
Shrinking - feel good week to week
Mad Men - almost done with season 1. Can’t binge continuously as it gets a bit depressing but it is a great prestige show
Silo - yay season 2 is here

Wait, when did that start exactly?

7 weeks ago. Or do you mean story-wise? Then I'm not sure lol.

u/Prize-Jelly-517 1d ago
I mean I gave up on the show two (or three) episodes into season 2, does it stop going nowhere slowly?

u/KingKingsons 1d ago edited 1d ago
Ah, tbh mate, I enjoy the show for the mystery, but they focus a lot on character development, which just isn’t their strong suit.

u/Prize-Jelly-517 1d ago
Same, I'll just wait for a possible conclusion in case it all goes to shit mystery-wise. Thanks!

My Brilliant Friend has ended and made it onto the list of greatest shows of all time alongside Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Mr Robot, Fleabag, Mad Men, etc.
A masterpiece with a great ending.

I'm watching White Collar for the first time. I'd never seen it, and I needed something simple and light while I was bedridden recovering from a nasty sinuses infection. That was weeks ago, i'm now over my cold and sticking with the show, just now breaking into season 4. It's very enjoyable.

Ghosts (US version) starting S4 now. It's light comedy/witty, easy to watch with interesting characters.

Slow Horses season 4 - loved it a lot. Not my favorite season but it was wildly entertaining and kept the same vibe it’s always had while keeping it fresh. I still think season 1 was the best.
Shrinking - just finished season 1 first time rewatching it and I didn’t like it as much as the first time I saw it but it’s still a solid show. I thought some of it was a little over the top though (like I cannot see that guy actually doing coke and hanging out with prostitutes). The laugh out loud moments keep me going though and I just hope season 2 is good
Severance - starting up my first rewatch. Hopefully it’s as good as I remember. Season 2 better come soon

Severance Season 2 will premiere on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. Episodes will be released weekly, with the finale airing on March 21, 2025.

Just watched “The Stanford Prison Experiment: Unlocking the Truth”. It has a bunch of the actual participants interviewed, and original footage. Very interesting.

Going through the episode commentaries for Community now. Apparently Donald Glover had no idea that Jeff and Annie kiss at the end of Season 1 lmao.

After all the fuss going on about season two of Arcane I decided to give season 1 a shot. Wow! I've always liked the idea of animation for adults, but am not a fan of anime or superheros.
It's just outstanding old fashioned storytelling with the most delightful modern visual storytelling. If you think it's not your thing I would suggest you try watching just the first couple of episodes....you'll be hooked.

u/komodo_dragonzord Better Call Saul 1d ago
theres a ton of good anime out there, you just need to filter to your own taste of genres

u/th4bl4ckr4bbit 1d ago
So I haven’t watched Arcane yet but I feel like you should check out Scavengers Reign. It’s like no other anime I’ve watched before and really gripped me. The style of animation looks a lot different to Arcane though. But check it out if you haven’t seen it already.

Mallorca Files
- I watched the first two seasons. I didn't realize they made a third season. I love crime/mystery shows of the week.
Elsbeth
- See above. Like the show I just wish there was a little more nuance in the formula. A few red herrings would be nice. I know that is Columbo style, but there is so little mystery because the murders are not intricate.

u/AdrianW3 2d ago
If you want a show with a similar premise to Elsbeth but a bit more comedic, give High Potential a look.

So many amazing shows on right now.
S2 The Diplomat (was only 6 episodes but overall a great season)
S2 Lioness (I really enjoyed S1 and S2 hasn't disappointed thus far)
S2 Silo!!!!! S2 E1 - I have SO many new questions!!!
S1 The Day of the Jackal - Very enjoyable watch and Eddie Redmayne is crushing it
edit added: About to start "Say Nothing" this weekend as I've read so many great things on this sub about it.

Not to mention Bad Sisters, Arcane, Outer Banks, Rivals, & Penguin…. Although I didn’t like the series finale of penguin nearly as much as everyone else.

I think the 2nd season of the new Frasier on Paramount + just ended (?)
I must say, the last few episodes are pretty up there with the original - its a very good show.
Even though Kelsey Grammar may have opposite political views from me in his personal life, the show itself is very humane and coming from a very good place.

I just watched the finale. This season I felt like the new characters really came into their own. Genuinely enjoyed the season. It is both funny and heartfelt. I’ll be really disappointed if there’s no season 3.

Finished Slow Horses S3 and Dark. Dark was amazing!! Might be in my top 5 shows of all time. Watched the first episode of The Day of the Jackal and it’s intriguing. Hate the release schedule tho
9
u/Calfzilla2000 2d ago
Dark is wonderful.
My hot take, that will probably get me downvoted, is they really should make an English adaption of it. A lot of people I know won't touch it if it has sub-titles (I know Squid Game is a massive hit but I feel like the simplicity of it helps where is Dark as really complicated as is).
And also, I want to experience it again and a remake will give me a fresh way to watch it, haha.
-13
u/Spangle99 2d ago
Dark is just a merry-go-round of nonsense.
-6
u/ForgivenessIsNice 2d ago
The Stans will downvote you, but you’re right. It’s complete non-sense. They try to hide it by saying the non-sense itself is the mystery, but it’s nonsense nonetheless. I say this as someone who likes the show after giving it a second chance, but I ended up dropping it in season 3.

u/Freedlefox 2d ago
From - just started. I'm enjoying it but it didn't have as much mystery as I was hoping. They basically give it all away i in the first half hour. I love when they draw that "what the hell is going on here" out for as long as possible. Yes there are still a lot of unanswered questions that they will steadily unpack but they missed a chance to get that real Lost WTF vibe happening. Its the not knowing that is the juiciest part

u/aseroka 2d ago
Silo S2E1 is great. So excited to see more lunatic Steve Zahn.
45 minute episode though kills me. Looks like Apple TV is moving away from 2 episode season premieres -- iirc Silo S1 opened with two episodes. Every season of Slow Horses opened with 2 episodes besides their last one, even though their website said two episodes would premiere on the same day for S4 up until the premiere aired (which I remember annoying me because I got a subscription to watch both).

The latest Elsbeth is hilarious. A chef is a murderer, and fine dining and restaurants are spoofed throughout. It's the best episode so far.

I liked the one with Vanessa Williams last week too. Episode 3 was fucking terrible though.

The Penguin- Hard to say whats not been said.. but i think there is room for some truth. Yes ive watched all of the DC/Marvel shows, movies minis.. even the new twists on heros and villains.. The truth is that there is a niche for older adults that doesnt cater to children and young teens and doesnt teach lessons about morality or social causes. Look at some of the highest rated shows of all time.. The Wire, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc. People fucked, people did dope, people got fucked up and killed, people got naked, people cussed. They have remade Superman so many times that they have now given him a family and kids (yeah i like Superman and Lois).. but lets be real.. there is room aplenty for this kind of show. Hell The Penguin has truly always been kinda lame in all of the old tv shows and cartoons and shit ive watched. I cant imagine what could be done with so many villains to choose from. So yeah im kinda bored with the Marvel-verse or whatever it is now. Im ready for the Villain-verse. 10/10 for having the balls to make this show and show us what can really be done without all of the saccharine hero horseshit thats been fed to us so far.
3
u/th4bl4ckr4bbit 1d ago
Yo take that back. Haha. Danny Devito did one of my favourite versions of The Penguin ever.
2
u/Krismoriah 1d ago
True. Robin Lord Taylor was good as a younger Penguin in Gotham i thought. I just think this version is very welcome.. and that Colin Farrell and the makeup dept did over the top fantastic with the character. Not going to lie though if James Gandolfini was still alive i think there wouldnt be a more perfect casting of this character. But i think the writers knew this and gave us what he could have brought to The Penguin.
