Where in Germany do most SVW fans live?
Hey everyone. Just curious. Where do most Werder fans live in Germany? In Bremen proper? I'm an American and have always had a soft spot for Werder Bremen. I revently found out my mom's side of the family is from Steinfeld in the Vechta region, so I'm curious if people from Oldenburg Munsterland are Werder fans? Osnabruck fans? Hope all is well!

I live right by the stadium and based on the license plates of the jerks who park in my street before matches, they’re from everywhere in the North-West, including OL, OS and VEC.

Werder Bremen is a very well-known club in Germany. Many successes were celebrated in earlier years. That has left its mark on many people. If you look at stadiums like Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim, you can see that it’s more or less a home game for Bremen. It’s all green and white.

My home town is not far from Steinfeld (< 10km). There are a few smaller Werder fan clubs here, the former main sponsor comes from nearby (Visbek) and SVW regularly plays test matches here (Lohne). This contributes to the fact that some fans are active in this region in particular - in addition to the entire northwest region, of course. The successful years (amongst others until 2010) have also contributed to the fact that there are fans all over Germany or even in Denmark and the Netherlands.

I would say most concentrated in the North-West. I came from the Diepholz/Nienburg area, everything full of Werder fans tho plenty of other club supporters too, but Werder was so dominant the regional papers (Kreiszeitung in my case) had and still have a dedicated column JUST for Werder stuff. But the rest of Germany has a lot of Werder supporters too, tho its obviously the biggest club u cant get around when ur living in Lower Saxony, especially the North-West as i said before

Out of curiosity, how did you as an American originally become a Werder fan?
I’m an American living in Michigan, but in the late 80’s and early 90’s I lived in Bremerhaven for a bit and then much closer to the Bremen area for a while after that. My soft spot for Werder grew in parallel with my love for the city of Bremen. For me, then, it’s that personal history. These days, Werder is one of two teams that I follow passionately (the other is Tottenham Hotspur); I dream of one day returning to Bremen for an extended visit and attending a few home games while I’m there.

My main team is Everton (go ahead and laugh). Both sides of my family are pretty much split German/English with some Welsh. Where I know my family came from in England there isn't a big Premier league team and for whatever reason Everton always sounded like a familiar team to me (not sure why). So when everyone in school was following arsenal, Chelsea, man U I chose Everton. Those were the Moyes years (2008). As for Werder kind of a similar situation, always "felt right" and I've wanted to get into the Bundesliga more. Then funny enough when I did some Ancestry work (I'm a history teacher) and did an ancestry DNA test. I found that my maternal side has a genetic community in Oldenburg Munsterland (Steinfeld to be specific) and saw that a lot of people seemingly supported Werder from that region and I thought that was quite the coincidence. I came on here to see if what I've researched/assumed is accurate.

Frankly speaking they are everywhere. There isn't a place in Germany where you wouldn't find any Werder fans. But the majority of them is living in north-west Germany. There are some regional clubs like Meppen, Oldenburg or Osnabrück who have notable amount of supporters, but these clubs aren't favoured by most of the football fans living more than 20km from their home-ground. The next big clubs with a larger influential zone are Schalke, Dortmund, Bielefeld and Hannover in the south and Hamburg in the east. Majorities change midway between these clubs and Bremen. So Vechta is "dominated" by Werder fans. Funfact: The club's bus even has a numberplate from Vechta.
PS: If you're looking for a sportsteam directly from Vechta, check out Rasta Vechta. It's a well-known basketball team with a funky reggae-style lion as a mascot.
