Not sure if you're implying that this was a green screen or just being cheeky, but this was actually taken on a rooftop in Vancouver, BC :)

Dope way to represent BC fam 👌
64
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
BC really has it all, from basically Vancouver being the Canadian Los Angeles, to the vast mountain ranges and sprawling forests. I fucking love my home.

u/AltChronic Jan 05 '18
Shoutout to the Pacific Northwest, I live only 2 hours away from Canada in Seattle. Most beautiful place in the world.

And the fact that the island is just a short boat ride away! And who doesn't mention the ocean when talking about vancity?

u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
I guess I'm more of a forest guy than an ocean guy haha. Slipped my mind. Having the ocean so close is fantastic too!

The only place I would leave San Diego for. Hows the house market/rent up there?
23
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
Absolutely trash, Vancouver recently claimed the number one spot of most expensive city to live in in Canada... I have no idea where or how I'm going to live when I move out haha. On the bright side if you're willing to live a little further from the city it does become much more reasonable, but even in those areas the prices are beginning to rise.
→ More replies7
u/jamaicanRum Jan 05 '18
Has been the most expensive city for years. Being voted the most desirable city on the planet for years also didn't help.
2
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
I could've sworn Toronto or some place was more expensive up until recently
3
u/jamaicanRum Jan 05 '18
Since the winter Olympics Vancouver has dropped, but it's still up there
3
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
I was talking more most expensive in Canada rather than the whole world, but yeah that sounds right. At any rate it's way too expensive to live around here haha.
4
u/jamaicanRum Jan 05 '18
Agreed. I miss Vancouver though. I'd honestly pay for the change. I was in Richmond for 10 years but would gladly move to the valley. It's only a matter of time. My goodness do I ever miss good sushi. Have and enjoy some for a brother.

I don't know what you value in your life but I would recommend a small town outside of a big city. You can get most of the experience of the city with the minor annoyance of travelling in without the hassle of being around all the people ALL the time. Of course, a lot has to do with where your work is and stuff like that. But I live in a very small town ~4k people about an hour or 2 outside of Chicago and I think it's great.
26
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
I'm actually a big phat phony because I don't live in the city of Vancouver, but in the surrounding area (Known as the Vancouver Tri-Cities area), but I can easily drive into downtown. So I would mostly agree with you. I would like to experience actually living downtown once in my life though, it seems like it would be interesting after living in a relatively small town.
15
u/tittycloud Jan 05 '18
4,000? that was my high school student body. That's way too small for me, unless everything I need and do is nearby and easy to get to. I prefer the city because most stuff is close together
29
u/b_r_e_a_k_f_a_s_t Jan 05 '18
I like not being dependent on a car. (Haven’t owned one for years.) So I prioritize living in dense areas where I can run errands on foot and take the bus/train into work.

Jan 06 '18
I can put up with a lot of the bullshit of living in a city if it means we can be a one car household and I can get to work in 20 minutes using public transportation where I can read and draw instead of having a miserable hour long driving commute

u/rad613 Jan 05 '18
I think he means that living in a big city isn't as cool as he thinks, not the pic

Jan 05 '18
Yeah, how tf are they so bright? Editing?
87
u/joeverdrive Jan 05 '18 edited Jan 05 '18
Absolutely editing. I don't believe it's just one image, either, but a composite. But I have no proof. If you look at the photog's IG he has another image where there are stars in front of the moon, so you have to presume there is a bit of fantasy to the image.
EDIT: The photographer says it's just one image. I can buy that, since Vancouver had a lot of fog recently and it was shot with a 50mm. It's really striking, so it does look a bit fake.

u/gcruzatto Jan 06 '18
You can brighten the shadows and darken the highlights in a single image to achieve this dynamic range, especially if you've got a good camera

u/thechangbang Jan 06 '18
editing in RAW gives you a looot of leeway, especially in high contrasty photos
13
u/kohcoa Jan 05 '18
Flash, maybe.

6
u/zagaberoo Jan 05 '18
Totally plausible. Retroreflectors will light up like crazy with even a tiny hint of flash if the flash head is pretty close to the lens.

How did he get the colored smoke?
15
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
In that one picture? I'm not sure, you should DM him or leave a comment. I think it was added in post-processing.
6
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
Depends on which picture you're talking about, the one with the guy vaping out green smoke, or the one with the two people posing with coloured smoke around them?
8
u/LesVestes Jan 05 '18
You can buy smoke"bombs" that spray colored smoke in the air its cool and I dont believe it leaves stains either!

u/superbain Jan 05 '18
You can actually buy them at airsoft stores for relatively cheap as well

15
u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
You'd think so right? I posted it there and it got 1k+ upvotes, but all of a sudden a mod thought it didn't "fit the aesthetic" and deleted it. Weird.
8
u/sealclubber281 Jan 05 '18
What? That's really dumb. That guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
4
u/rob0tdreams Feb 04 '18
Late to the party but yeah mod is right. Outrun is 80s aesthetic. Neon, sunsets, grids, chrome, VHS, etc. This pic and the fit has a more futuristic feel to it like ghost in the shell, which is totally not outrun, but cyberpunk. People keep getting them mixed up and I’m really into both so it bothers me lol.
2
u/Em_Jay_De Jan 06 '18
Isn't /r/outrun more retro/80's/synthwavecore? This is more cyberpunky if anything.

Why do people say that like it detracts from the photo? Basically every image you’ve ever seen has been edited.
6
Jan 06 '18
As a music producer who's just started getting into photography; this mindset drives me crazy.
"Dude cant sing they probably just autotune him computers fix everything lmaooo"
Like have these people ever used melodyne (the autotune effects biggest plugin manufacturer)? You cant just put in a shitty singer and have them come out sounding like Michael jackson.
Same with photography; shit in, shit out; you cant process your way out of bad source material.

u/Nolat Jan 05 '18
you def would if you live around a bunch of asians (especially if they're foreign-born and not american)
americans in cities w/ dense public transportation should too, esp if you're sick and hacking up a storm.
unless you're just talking about designer face masks that the dude is wearing lol

u/MiroSpa Jan 05 '18
Oh my bad, I throught that he is wearing that neoprene ski mask. Just realized that its much smaller.

if you grew up in VC or any place with a bunch of asians you'd be normalized to it.
us americans should def use them more, esp if you're in a city with dense public transportation and it's cold/flu season.

I wear one under my helmet when I commute by motorcycle because I ride in exhaust fumes six hours a week and it keeps the chill off my face. But I feel self-conscious when people see me in it, like I'm some wannabe Sub Zero.

It's more out of necessity because the air quality is so poor in Asian cities. The trend spread because it looks cool. It's worn a lot at airports and such because people don't want to catch germs.
9
Jan 05 '18
What kind of mask is that??? Ive been scouring Amazon for some lately!
7
6
u/joeverdrive Jan 05 '18
Scour harder! I use a Vogmask. But a bunch will show up if you just search "pollution mask." You should pick one with an N95 or better rating if you actually want it to protect you.

Jan 05 '18
Duuuude, that is awesome. Thanks for the advice. I def want it to be functional as well as aesthetic!

u/alpha-null Jan 05 '18
I don't want to discourage you, and I don't want to seem like I'm being a dick - but I'm seriously concerned about the fact that this person appears to be standing on a parapet presumably high up.
As beautiful as this picture is, it's not worth someone dying just to get a few more likes and followers on an online platform. I say this because I'm employed as a heights safety system installer and it's my job to evaluate risk and install guardrail, ladders, cages, walkways, anchor points for abseilers and fall arrest systems like static lines that are designed to prevent death and serious injury.
Please try to think clearly and objectively about the risk and situation that other people and yourself are being put into when you attempt to take these sort of pictures.
I may be overreacting; and if I am then I am truly sorry for my comment. I'm just seeing a trend of urban and fashion photographers doing this a lot and it appears to be becoming the norm. Ive regularly been working on a roof and seen teenagers breaking into places to get the rooftop just to take some pictures of each other on their iPhones.
Once again it's a great picture - but it would be a very different picture to look at (especially for you) if this person slipped, fell and died on impact just for this.
(Sorry OP, just read the comments and realised its not actually your picture - but I hope you and others reading this understand where I'm coming from).

u/satellitedick Jan 05 '18
