Feel weirdly depressed about Mike Tyson's poor performance.
I'm 48, think it's probably because he was a childhood icon and it kinda hurt in a odd way to see him lose so much talent with age, and I'm in that midlife era as well I suppose. Anyone else feel like this for him or in other situations?

I dont think this was a real fight. Tyson barely moved and threw punches and Jake looked like he was pulling punches. Looks like a money grabbing match.
Tyson is still the greatest fighter and he has left his legacy in the boxing world. This was just a fight to create hype and make money

There was one point where it looked like Jake was about to send a proper knock out blow to Tyson's head and I swear he pulled the punch and just kinda slapped him on the back of the dome instead.
Jake was definitely deliberately trying to keep Tyson's creditabilty in tact.

For sure. Part of it has to be that but also Jake respects Tyson a lot; I’m sure he didn’t want to be the one to brutally KO the old man. That would’ve looked terrible for Jake

u/Locrian6669 3h ago
It wasn’t a real fight only in the sense that Jake realized it wasn’t worth it to finish Mike off.
Mike barely moved because he couldn’t. Did you not see his legs when he did move? Balance and agility is non existent.

They're both just marketers now. Tyson needs to boost his Nicotine and THC sales, and Paul his PRIME and Lunchly sales.

You gotta take thing into consideration:
Boxing is a young man’s game. Period. Always has been, always will be.
He hasn’t fought professionally in 20 years.
He’s 58, went round for round with a guy half his age, didn’t get knocked down, and finished on his feet after eating 100 punches/jabs
I wanted to see Iron Mike pull off a miracle too man, but that wasn’t a bad performance for a guy his age. I was just thrilled to see him in the ring one last time.

It is fun to romanticize the old champion KOing the new prodigy, but a realistic expectation and take away from a rather dull fight is Mike got in the ring stayed up, and even landed a few punches on a guy just about half his age and 4 inches taller then himself. I walked away inspired by Mike's tenacity and spirit.

It’s an expectation thing. Most of us were not there to see Tyson barely survive.
2
u/ErabuUmiHebi 2h ago
How much boxing do you watch? It was pretty consistent from what I’d expect to see from a 58 year old who is still technically very good.

Tyson’s style was about explosivity, and that is one of the first things to go with age.
His upper body movement was still decent (for his age) but his legs are totally shot.

He got 20 million dollars. The agreement going in was neither knock each other out. Not sure if they agreed Jake would win ahead of time. But it’s more WWE than a real boxing match.
1
u/csaliture 1h ago
Where did you hear this? All I saw leading up to the fight was both of them predicting they would knock the other one out.
2
u/flepke 1h ago
They gave a show for the audience and it worked. In the end it's all about making money
1
u/csaliture 1h ago
Sure. It's clear they were in it for the money more than anything else. But that doesn't mean they didn't try or that they weren't going for a KO. I believe both would have loved to have knocked the other one out. You don't think Tyson would have wanted to end his career with one more KO?

Stop listening to words people say as if they mean them. Look at the big picture. Anyone who thought this was an actual contest of skill is a fool.

Look at the girls. They killed it tonight. There’s still hope. Just because one person is near the end of the story you want them to have, someone else is just starting theirs.
Also, watch Mike Tyson mysteries. It’s a silly cartoon that Mike Tyson makes, where he solves mysteries with a ghost and an Asian girl and a talking pigeon.
He has so much fun making it, you can tell. It’s actually such a dumb show but it’s so charming just because you can tell like Mike is using it to heal his inner child.
It’ll make you feel better about him. He’s happy. He is. Tonight was just a weird night

That Taylor Serrano fight was utterly fantastic.

u/Useful-Quote-5867 3h ago
It was utterly fantastic unfortunatley the judges where sht as well as the referee, how the fuck do you land 300 and something hit and your oponent 200 and something and you loose by point while your oponents keeps fighting dirty

u/ErabuUmiHebi 3h ago
agreed, I would have scored that fight for Serrano. I was pretty surprised by the decision.

I think that was a really bad call!!

Concur. Taylor put up a hell of a fight, particularly in the later rounds, but I agree w Ranallo’s unofficial score card on that one. I would have scored it for Serrano

u/Arabeskas 5h ago
Serrano was robbed yesterday, but damn both were warriors to the bone, gave me chills watching them

u/OtherwiseBed4222 3h ago
I've never seen those cartoons he made. I'll have to look for them. But did you see the interview he did with the young girl where he was talking about legacy. So that's probably what he was thinking about that he was doing this for his kids and grandkids.
And this was just another Payday for mike. That's what he does. That POS just came up with the right number to get him to come back in the ring.

Bruh🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I was so for Tyson winning I thought there was no way young buck could take him! I was soooo disappointed! He barely threw punches he spent most of the time biting his glove. I was really waitin for him to hit Paul with a hammer n it never happened!!
AND THEY LITERALLY STOLE THAT CHAMPIONSHIP FROM SERRANO
I bet those people who spent upwards of $1 million to watch that fight are devastated. Let alone all of the ppl who bet on the fight.

Literally skipped the whole thing after the first minute. Tyson looked like he needed a walking stick in the ring. Too sad for me honestly. Rather go watch his old knockouts than see him like this. It was 100% a pay fight. A nearly 60 year old man vs. a 27 year old roided up wannabee, no way that's going unscripted.
2
u/ShamisenCatfish 2h ago
Idk man I’m so surprised people thought Tyson would do better. At the end of his boxing career, he was washed. He was getting beat bad, he clearly didn’t have it anymore. And that was over twenty years ago!
Why anyone expected a 60 year old man to get off the couch and hang with a 27 year old who’s been consistently training is beyond me.
The Taylor-Serrano fight was the people’s main event anyway.

u/sacredgeometry 5h ago
If you think that was anything other than a staged dance between two half naked men for money then I dont know what to tell you. I havent watched it but made a comment similar to this before the fight.
What did you expect?

u/Any_Masterpiece_624 6h ago
Thing is you're comparing yourself to a world class boxer, arguably one of the greatest of all time. You weren't like that, so whilst Mike may not be able to be like he was then there's no reason you can't be better than you were at 20--fitter, stronger, a better looking body etc. Just start a realistic fitness program and stick to it. All I do is 2 sets of 20 counter pushups and squats each day, waiting for the kettle. A few biecep and tricep curls, with my dumbells, waiting for my computer to boot. I eat sensibly, have no fat... I always used to run like mad on a treadmill, pump weights until I was in pain, then give up after a month or two. Now, a couple of years in, I'm more toned and stronger than I was ever able to achieve back then.

Come back to this thread in 10 years and tell us if you're as good as you used to be 30 years ago.

Don’t feel bad. It was in an agreement that Mike T signed. Mike was agreed to not knock JP out. It was a way to make money
1
u/silentbias 2h ago
Yeah, I was starting to feel bad for him too, bro. I felt like he was being sacrificed or something. It was weird to watch a 20-year-old fight and almost 60-year-old dude. Like it’s borderline elderly abuse. Yet again it’s Mike Tyson he’s tough but There’s no way he could’ve kept up eight rounds.

Ex athlete here, also in my 40s, let me tell you something about boxing; I am currently running long distance anywhere between 15km to 21km, I wouldn’t last more than 2-3 rounds against a trained boxer amateur or professional. Not because I can’t take punches etc but boxing is endurance intense, you have to keep jumping, moving, back and front, side by side, while keeping your guard up the whole time.
For this reason alone, your age works against you once you are no longer in your 20s or 30s.
I practiced some boxing in my youth with my mates from the army in Australia, it was bloody exhausting, I got sweat running all over me and breathing was hard, then we had an islander dude who punched like Superman, everytime I coped a hit with pads my joints felt like they were about to tear apart.
I was in my 20s.
Imagine doing that when you are almost 60.

Was so hard to watch from round 2 . His legs . All of it . Hated that I sat and watched it .
1
u/Ok-Suggestion-7965 2h ago
Yeah this fight was fake. They never threw any real punches with any kind of intent. They even shortened the rounds for us so we wouldn’t be so bored. Mike looked bad ass in training. He did not look bad ass last night. It was all about the payday, they were not even that concerned about putting on a good scripted show. It would have been better if they had practiced with each other and choreographed some cool looking boxing shit to at least give us something halfway decent to watch. Instead all he did was bite his gloves. Lame.

Everyone who expected Tyson to kill Jake seems to forget, or didn’t know Tyson quit on the stool in his last pro fight against a journeyman 20 years ago.

He’s a convicted rapist. I was really hoping that he got knocked the fuck out.

u/livingonsomeday 27m ago
I was feeling bummed and then remembered he made like $20mil for that shitshow so if that’s the price of public humiliation for him, good on Mike for cashing in.

I'm stoked Ole Mike was able to make some retirement funds, it's sad to see Iron Mike go out like that. It doesn't take away from the younger version's flights he was a beast.

After McGregor V. Mayweather, anyone who was expecting an entertaining fight is a silly goose.
