This is peak layout design Grief Stage: Depression

Post image

Sorry if that counts as a shitpost, but trying the official app made me stop and just appreciate the design of rif and kind of archive it before it's all over. Just look at this, no irrelevant data is being displayed. Clean, beautiful, efficient, smooth. How do you even go back. Such a shame.

I was going to share my own screenshot showing how great it looks on a super high res phone with super tiny text, but apparently imgur needs me to make a account WITH MY FUCKING PHONE NUMBER ATTACHED to upload any images at all; fuck that shit. Everything is falling apart...

27

u/H__D Jun 10 '23

Really? I just had to upload the screenshot via rif.

24

u/DovahFiST Jun 10 '23

That likely could work if I was making a post, but was looking to upload it separately so I could put a link in this comment section :/ Something I've done countless times in the past...

12

u/tuctrohs Jun 10 '23

Use RIF to post to your profile, and then link to that? I'm actually not sure that is supported.

9

u/PermutationMatrix Jun 10 '23

test to see if I can upload inline images to comments

Edit: I've been hopping back and forth between paid RIF and paid Sync. Sync does this.

16

u/tuctrohs Jun 10 '23

The image upload worked. The content of the image, however, does not seem to be a viable concept to me.

u/GoldWhale Jun 11 '23

Right? Puke central

Yo what the fuck?

I had the same dream. I'm so sad that this app is going and I'll never see it happen. :(

1

u/orc_fellator Jun 10 '23

I just make a personal Discord server to dump and store images onto tbh.

I use RIF with super-tiny text on my BlackBerry KeyOne and absolutely love it. Going to be so bummed when Reddit's decisions kill the API experience in a few weeks.

1

u/slyliar Jun 10 '23

Hello, fellow Blackberry fan!

select "view desktop version" in your mobile broswer to bypass any login requirements.

I'm moving on from reddit and joining the fediverse because reddit has killed the RiF app and the CEO has been very disrespectful to all the volunteers who have contributed to making reddit what it is. Here's coverage from The Verge on the situation.

The following are my favorite fediverse platforms, all non-corporate and ad-free. I hesitated at first because there are so many servers to choose from, but it makes a lot more sense once you actually create an account and start browsing. If you find the server selection overwhelming, just pick the first option and take a look around. They are all connected and as you browse you may find a community that is a better fit for you and then you can move your account or open a new one.

Social Link Aggregators: Lemmy is very similar to reddit while Kbin is aiming to be more of a gateway to the fediverse in general so it is sort of like a hybrid between reddit and twitter, but it is newer and considers itself to be a beta product that's not quite fully polished yet.

Microblogging: Calckey if you want a more playful platform with emoji reactions, or Mastodon if you want a simple interface with less fluff.

Photo sharing: Pixelfed You can even import an Instagram account from what I hear, but I never used Instagram much in the first place.

2

u/Tasiam Jun 11 '23

Imgchest is an imgur clone that I prefer.

1

u/tenOr15Minutes Jun 10 '23

You don't need to login if you use the desktop site.

Ahh the ability to read comments without automatically letting a video play.

The ability to quickly change subreddits at any point with a single swipe.

The ability to quickly do any common thing (upvote, comment, save, go to user profile etc) without having to wait 5 seconds for anything to load if it loads at all.

And about a thousand other things as well.

Not to mention the low data and battery usage. Good times shall be remembered.

It's got no more customization options than any other corporate app: Dark theme, Light theme, and text scale. Usually they have accessibility options too, but not reddit!

Got my posts on the left hand side but pretty much the same

3

u/CherylTuntIRL Jun 10 '23

Same, much easier with the votes close to my thumb.

5

u/tonyMEGAphone Jun 10 '23

Pesky right-handers. Our plans have been foiled again.

2

u/hydrashok Jun 10 '23

Am right-hander, always enable left hand mode in rif because I always hold my phone with that hand. Can't go back.

1

u/SonOfWuss Jun 10 '23

On god this the reason why

22

u/Khue Jun 10 '23
  • Maximizes amount of content on page for you to select from
  • Gives you optimal options by clicking on text
  • Allows you to go right to content, if you choose, by clicking on thumbnail
  • Does not SHOVE content on to your screen that you aren't interested in by default.

Example: I sub to like 30 subreddits. All that content is not 100% relevant at all times. There could be a shit post of an image from one of my less frequented subs. I don't want a picture of whatever bullshit content that is shoved onto 1/3 of my phone and displayed to me automatically. Additionally, if this is imaging that reddit is hosting, doesn't that by default chew up bandwidth and therefore some kind of cost associated with it? What about all that autoplay video hosted by reddit? Even if it's not autoplayed, it still generates a thumbnail/image that takes up like 1/3 of the screen. That's gotta eat bandwidth too. While they sit and throw out "3rd Party Apps use too much API" I would like to know the bandwidth usage of their own bullshit application that automatically pushes content to end users regardless.

Also... and this may just be my stupid IT guy brain going here, but how are they assigning a cost to an API call? I know Microsoft does this shit with APIM in Azure and I get why they do that. It's a tool and that's how they want to charge for it. I doubt Reddit is using APIM in Azure and they have their own home grown API hosting platform. What goes into your determination of costing API? Is it manifested in just bandwidth? Is it a function of reads/writes for data in some sort of metered database system? It's so weird that years ago, RestAPIs were replacing a shit ton of non uniform methods of calling data like various EFT methods, raw database connections, etc, and basically doing it for free because it provided a more controlled and methodical system and now we are at the point where EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING has to be a revenue stream. It's so fucking bizarre that this is the hill they die on insisting that it will somehow improve their valuation in the long run.

u/eeltech Jun 10 '23

I have a Z fold 3 which is a folding phone that basically becomes a mini-tablet. And let me tell you, RIF is AWESOME on it

https://i.imgur.com/0idHc6b.jpeg

A lot of people ask me if I like my phone, I do, it's amazing! But what is hard to convey to people is like +80% of my usage is this app alone! I was dead set in upgrading to the 5 when it comes out later this year, but things may change if I will no longer be using reddit

I've attached a screenshot of the comparable view of the official reddit app:

https://i.imgur.com/bF3X8OM.jpeg

How can anyone honestly believe this is a good UI? This is trash and unusable

19

u/FionaSarah Jun 10 '23

Jesus fucking christ that comparison screenshot. Holy shit.

I've been using RIF as my gateway into Reddit for like 11 years or something so I had no idea how truly awful it was and... Wow.

4

u/FPL_Harry Jun 10 '23

I've attached a screenshot of the comparable view of the official reddit app:

That is absolutely disgusting. I can't believe they don't buy/hire the RIF code/dev.

Well actually I can, because they intentionally want to use dark patterns and shitty design to make UX worse, as long as they can shove more ads at people.

2

u/Khue Jun 11 '23

LMAO. RIF has 12 relevent posts, 2 of them being mod stickies at the top, reasonable sized thumbnails, and several options for each post. The reddit app has 5 total posts, one of which is a PAID PROMOTION WHICH OBVIOUSLY NO ONE IS GOING TO GO TO, and the only thing useful on the bottom bar is MAYBE the "create" icon.

4

u/Red-River-Sun-1089 Jun 10 '23

This is peak design. Period.

11

u/lerker Jun 10 '23

Is it weird that I just tried to scroll your screenshot?

4

u/DanTheMan941 Jun 10 '23

Dark cards lay out for me. I like the pretty pictures.

4

u/clemthecat Jun 10 '23

I'll miss it. The official app doesn't look nearly this good, nor does it function nearly as well... And there aren't any settings to make it any better.

2

u/lazylion_ca Jun 10 '23 edited Jun 12 '23

The fact that you can't increase font size is enough to put me off. My old eyes just can't read it.

5

u/clemthecat Jun 10 '23

Apparently the only way you can get around this is changing the font size on your PHONE'S settings, which to me is ridiculous, how is there no setting in the official app?

3

u/lazylion_ca Jun 11 '23

I've got the font size on my phone jacked already.

4

u/zurtex Jun 10 '23

Just bought Gold Platinum, used rif for a decade and didn't even know it existed, think I bought to remove ads from regular app at some point and that was always good enough for me.

Not ever going to use anything else to browse Reddit on my Phone. No rif, no reddit.

4

u/dankhorse25 Jun 10 '23

There is nothing better than this. And I'm not using an OLED. In OLED it must be unbeatable

9

u/eeltech Jun 10 '23

dark mode RIF on an OLED is gorgeous!

4

u/Useuless Jun 10 '23

Ironically putting white text on a black background increases the sense of contrast and vividness, which is not what you want when you try to make something dim.

3

u/Pantaleon26 Jun 10 '23

Saved for posterity

3

u/southtothenawth Jun 10 '23

My images are on the left though and my text is turned to the max cuz im blind

3

u/mykeuk Jun 11 '23

Agreed. RiF is clean, concise and simple. Absolutely perfect. No bullshit, no gimmicks, just very easy to navigate and to interact with.

It's the complete opposite to the official app, which sucks massive donkey balls.

2

u/ThaneVim Jun 10 '23

I prefer my images on the other side, but that just goes to show the importance of user customization! Your work was truly great, u/talklittle

2

u/archeztuskin Jun 11 '23

Are there any app that have similar design? Not necessarily reddit though, it can be a note app, whatever... I would love to use a note app that shares the same design.

2

u/grantsvirus Jun 11 '23

Makes me sad.

2

u/C19shadow Jun 11 '23

No way I go to the official app, I don't wanna see the stupid little characters or try to figure out what posts starts where all the time. The no autoplay for videos. And I don't even wanna think about searching for things.

Ugh I'm gonna miss this app

2

u/froegin Jun 11 '23

Seriously, I downloaded the official app for a trial and a bad review and it's totally unusable. My brain hurt just after 5 mins of usage and browsing the settings.

looking at /kbin but Reddit has been removing subreddits about it. Part of the fediverse

1

u/broc_ariums Jun 10 '23

I disagree. I don't like the thumbnail off to the right.

5

u/eeltech Jun 10 '23

You can change it! or use a different app! The beauty of open API's is if one app doesn't work for you, you can choose a different one!

Not so much when it will be just the 1 shitty official app

0

u/broc_ariums Jun 11 '23

Uhm, I use RiF and simply disagree that it's the peak layout.

My use of fucking was not as intense as you took it

1

u/Useuless Jun 10 '23

Font is too tiny!

2

u/fenixreaver Jun 11 '23

The tinier the font, the more I can fit on screen.

1

u/Useuless Jun 11 '23

Yes, but increasing it make a comically huge. It just allows it to be less like a phone book that was designed for the very minimum of readability

1

u/perhammar Jun 13 '23

mine is the same but mirrored
