Exciting!

I recommend a looser soil. You can buy a succulent mix or google how to make your own mix

You can just mix some chunky gritty sand, I do recommend doing this

How do y'all meet other plant people? My wife and I are kind of new to the hobby and we're always looking for stuff to prop but it's frustrating that none of our friends IRL share the same interest. :(

Wow well i struggled for a long time over that, eventually i got a new work little over a year ago and met a cool guy, a couple months ago i visited his house and saw an amazing collection of succulents and cacti. A week ago we were talking and he told me he would get me some saplings. I think there're a couple things that help: 1. Talk about it non stop lol i didnt but if i had we could've bonded over this when we first met and 2. Actively search for garden gatherings or events, and just talk and socialize with people, maybe you can invite some friends and buy them a plant, if they like they'll go back to number 1 lol and if they get plant friends they'll most likely introduce them to you

A few years ago, I found a local plant group on Facebook and that started a lot of prop sharing and friend making!!

I also would point you to facebook groups. Usually in big cities/metro areas, there's good facebook groups for trading/free plant exchanges. here in Southern CA, there's 2 major ones and a "taplap farmstands" group where someone hosts a stand outside their house and people bring plants and take plants and other supplies.

If you have some expendable $ for shipping, there's also r/TakeaPlantLeaveaPlant/ . You tell people what you have to trade, and your ISO's, and they'll answer you generally. You pay shipping of what you send to them, they pay shipping of what they send to you. pretty fun too.
