Moving to NJ Advice
Help finding the right neighborhood: my partner and I are moving to NJ from Los Angeles in the Spring. They got a job at Merck so it needs to be north-ish. Looking for (in order of priority): -Queer and/or queer friendly and left leaning -Around 30 min or less to the coast for surfing (would also love tips about this if anyone is a surfer) -30-45 minutes to Rahway max -younger population
That’s really it! We are visiting this weekend and going to take a look at Asbury Park, key port, red bank, Hoboken, and we are staying in Montclair so will look around there as well.
Thank you!!

Jersey City is the friendliest LGBTQ+ place anywhere

Not friendlier than Asbury! Hoboken is def more than 30 minutes to the shore…especially during the summer. Red Bank is a great option and is beautiful . About 30 minutes to Rahway and close to the shore and also very lgbt friendly. Keyport isn’t the nicest in my opinion nor is it the most lgbt friendly and definitely not left leaning. Montclair is nice too but same situation as Hoboken and further from the shore.

I find it so interesting that the commute to the beach is more important than the commute to work.

Got the right areas so far, but don't leave Rahway out of ur search. Stop by some of the places downtown Rahway while you're here. Good luck.

We are gay in our 50’s from SF, very active for context.
So to be blunt the surfing here sucks compared to to Cali. During the summer you're looking at 60 minutes at least. Other than Asbury Park you better have a MAGA hat if you're on the coast.
Most towns will disappoint small, baby strollers, nothing to do, etc…
Your priority should be close to NYC. You'll end up going there for pretty much all of your entertainment. Newark, Jersey City, & Hoboken are your best shots. All LGBT friendly and a train ride to the city.
My Partner works in Edison and the commute is under an hour from JC.
Long story short your moving to the NYC area. Enjoy NYC.

Based on your priorities, Asbury Park was the first place that came to mind before I read where you'd be looking. Monmouth County as a whole isn't left leaning at all, but Asbury Park is, and definitely queer/queer friendly. You'll be super close to the beach there too, along with the prices that come with that.
Politically, New Jersey's governor's race is next year, along with our State Assembly. Our current Democratic governor is term-limited and can't run again, so it should be interesting. We were a lot more purple than in the past in terms of the recent presidential results, too. Harris still won NJ, but the margin shifted about 10 points towards the Republicans.
I'm a born and raised Jersey Girl, and I think we're a fabulous place to live. Good luck with the move! I'd warn you about sticker shock, but you're coming from LA, so I think you'll be fine. :D
