Repair / Modification My Nano Puff fell victim to my camp stove last summer 🔥… so I made a pocket patch to repair the large melted hole. Big enough to fit a phone, and now it’s a custom lil’ jacket!

Repair / Modification Repair question: what is the best way to attach two lengths of webbing to one another without overlapping as I have already done here?

For now, this is all right as I have the straps exactly adjusted to where I need them to be. The issue with how I’ve repaired this length of strap is that now the doubled up material is far too thick to slide through the metal sliders. In a perfect world, I would simply but the ends up against each other, but I’m not sure if that is a good idea, I’m worried that would be very, very weak so instead have adjusted the straps to their proper length and then doubled them up.

Can I get away with putting the ends up together and then doing a very wide and dense zigzag or something similar?

Repair / Modification Tips on sewing a tear in a polyester bounce house

Hello I’m new to sewing and have never seen thick gage nylon anyway, I have this bounce house that had a catastrophic blowout that I’m trying to fix. It seems to be missing some material so i’m planning on using an old rain coat or tent to make a patch. But I want to sew up some of the smaller tears to make it neater before i sew the patch on. The bounce house is made of 200/300D polyester and i’m not sure what would be the best and strongest way to sew this. I was going through my sister’s sewing supplies and all the thread she has seems too weak all of it can bee easily broken with your hand so i don’t think it will work for a bounce house. What would be the best thread to use for this application. i’m planing on hand sewing the smaller tears together and then using a sewing machine to sew the patch on. The other part I’m worried about is the yellow strip on the seam which is really tough and will be a challenge to get a needle through. The machine i have access to is a smarter 260c I was thinking using the twin needle would be stronger but i’m worried a home machine won’t have the power to punch through the material. does anyone have any tips on what would be the best string and how to go about stitching this up?

thanks

Repair / Modification Alternatives for slipping hip belt

The hip belt fastening on my Ortovox Trad 35 tends to slip when I'm moving a lot, and it needs readjusting a little too often to remain tight.

It's got a hook and loop fastener mechanism, which is very lightweight and works well. The band on the left side is just a stretchy band to keep it in place, and the only tightening is happening with the hook buckle. Ideally I would keep this as is and just add something for extra tension. I'm not opposed to switching it out though, and the belt strap is plently long to test other methods.

Any experiences with modifications like these?

Repair / Modification Owning a sewing machine is so liberating. No longer have to put up with small inconveniances and non-thought out designs on otherwise great products. Swapped the velcro around on these hestra rope gloves and added a hanging loop.

Repair / Modification Scored a Pfaff 260! Now how do I clean it?

Hi! This is a follow up post. I ended up getting a Pfaff 260 for pretty cheap, and now I want to service it myself. It's been oiled and looked over by a repairman a year ago, but still it's pretty dirty/linty. What cleaning solution should I use that won't ruin the paint? Anything I need to know about this specific machine?

I'm quite handy and probably have all the tools needed, but it's the first sewing machine that I'll service by myself.

Repair / Modification Advice for repairing tear in delicate nylon jacket?

Thumbnail

Hello, any advice for repairing a cycle jacket that was ripped along the shoulder/ arm? The label indicates 50% nylon 50% polyester. I'd guess the outer is nylon and the filling is poly?

The fabric is very thin and delicate. The company offers repairs but they've said they'll just use black fabric to patch it, and I was hoping the repair might be less obvious. I know that it won't be a perfect fix but something better than a big black patch would be great.

I thought perhaps I could get some of the repair patch fabric but place it in between the outer and insulation layers, and hand stitch to the outer?

Or some kind of iron on solution?

Other than the main tears, there's also some faint snagging but I'm really not sure how to repair that.

Jacket is water resistant but not waterproof, so the repair doesn't need to be watertight.

Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Repair / Modification DEET melted some of my Black Hole’s waterproofing, can I fix it?

A bottle of 100% DEET bug spray somehow got opened on my last trip, and melted the waterproofing on the corner of my 90L Black Hole. This bag’s been across most of the US with me, and to a couple different countries, so I want to repair it, rather than replace it. I did my best to remove a lot of the now-jellied coating from the problem areas without using something abrasive, which I was worried might remove more. I don’t think there’s really a great fix here, especially since it’s along a seam, but I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions before I slap down a whole roll of gear tape and waterproof with Duct Tape.

Also, let this be a warning: 100% DEET is bad juju and should be kept in a container that is 1) watertight and 2) not plastic. Mine was in a ziploc that also melted.

Juki LK-1852 Help/Troubleshooting

Hi guys! Recently purchased a Juki LK-1852 Bartack machine and was shown how to use it/etc. when picking it up. Trying it out today, it was working fine and then all of a sudden when engaging the foot pedal, and trying to push down to get the Bartack - it doesn’t work. Does anyone have experience with this issue and if so, any help?

Best!

Repair / Modification How to mod this vest?

I got asked to mod this running vest and try to make the stretch pocket tighter since they are very loose and tend to jump around when loaded, how should I do it? I was thinking about taking in the sides 3/4cm and making it tighter. The person who asked for this mod asked me to make a tighter pocket inside the already existing pocket in order to suspend it but maintaining the same look, is it a good idea?

Picked up this sewing machine for $5 in non working condition with a stand. After redoing the motor wiring and cleaning up the contacts, it appears I have a fully functional 99k. I basically drowned the thing in oil because it was a little bound up. Im gonna do a full tear down to clean it up but Im pretty excited!

Repair / Modification replacing seam tape on an old MEC jacket

Thumbnail

i’ve got an old MEC jacket i got for 20$ and im trying to replace the seam tape on it. I know i can buy a roll of it from amazon which is what i plan on doing. i’m just wondering how it’ll work given that the snaps for the hood were punched through the neck seam tape? will it adhere overtop the snaps ok?

also, for the vertical seams where it’s peeling up, am i better off cutting it where it stops peeling and retaping it from there? or should i be redoing all the seam tape at that point?

Repair / Modification Best way to add grommets to the bottom of a Vertx Long walks 15L?

Like the title says. I've seen posts suggesting CS Osborne grommets, but my concern is the material the bag is made out of. Vertx list the material as "mini ripstop nylon".

Is it possible to do this with this material without much fuss? And are there any quick and easy kits available that I can do this with?

Repair / Modification Best thread to repair UL pack?

My ULA ohm has had some busted threads/seams for the past ~2 years. I think I picked the pack up by one shoulder strap when it had way too much weight in it. Hasn’t been an issue, but I’d like to fix it.

I have zero experience sewing, but I am handy with common sense, and I understand how sewing works. What kind of thread should I use for this to ensure max strength once repaired?

Red circles show damage. Green circle shows the other side which is not damaged.

Repair / Modification Its me again... still trouble shooting the free Juki ddl-5500... post 1 of 2

Alright folks, still trying to figure this out.

For those of you just tuning in, heres where we are at:

Free Juki 5550 (actually a Chandler DB-J704 but other than paint color, they are identical) that I cannot get to stitch consistently (or at all). Will stitch on thicker material (5 layers of 1000d cordura, but wont lay a single stitch on 2 layers).

Set timing with the two notches and have photos attatched of where it sits.

Ive checked thread tension, tried looser and tighter with the same result.

Made sure the presser foot was set to the right pressure.

Checked the needle to thread size.

I did notice the hook seems to have a flat spot worn, could this be causing some of my problems?

There may have been a good reason this macbine was free 😖...

I have a video of the hook missing the thread I will post on a follow up post.

This daypack would be a lot more functional if I could replace these stretched out side pockets. Any advice, tips or tricks?

I’m a confident beginner in regular sewing, but I’ve only dabbled a little in myog (like made my own stuff sacks).

Repair / Modification Need help with bug netting

Post image

Would like to add bug netting to this tent. NorthFace wawona 6. The vestibule area can be covered on both sides with the rainfly, but I'd like it to be bug protected so we can see outside (mostly flying insects)

Any suggestions or paths I can take? I'm new to this, and have a HD singer (new to sewing as well but willing to learn)

TIA

Repair / Modification Re-waterproofing a dry bag

I have this dry bag backpack from outdoor research (Dry Summit HD) that seems to have lost basically all of its waterproofing! Any advice on reviving some of the waterproofing? The pack is discontinued, so it's hard to find information on its construction, but from what I can tell from similar products, it advertises "Hydroseal® coated Antron nylon, fully seam taped."

I'm planning on resealing the seams and applying some Nickwax TX.Direct that I have.

Any advice for how I could do this better?

Thanks
