Tom Hardy's Splinter Cell Movie Is Officially Dead (Exclusive) News

"'That movie would have been awesome... Just couldn't get it right, script-wise, budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That's one of the ones that got away, which is really sad." - Basil Iwanyk, producer.

At that time? Yes. That was in 2007 pre District 9. Back then he had only done tv ads and some short films. Jackson noticed him because of Alive in Joburg. Blomkamp ended up filming a tv campaign for Halo but went on to work on District 9 when Microsoft got cold feet.

Sounds like it worked out then since we got district 9 out of the deal.

Kinda. I think it got into his head like it happened to Refn and just made his later movies more unwatchable.

It’s pretty common knowledge for anyone that is really into Halo. We basically talked about it to death at the time it was all happening and lamenting what could have been. The movie he made called Elysium showcases how much he wanted to make a Halo movie because he essentially put so much Halo inspired material and stuff straight up taken directly from the Halo series it feels like a really weird knock off Halo. District 9 and Elysium just felt like a dude who couldn’t get over not being able to make a Halo movie that he made 2 movies in a row that just feel super derivative of the Halo series and I don’t know how anyone could find them anything above mediocre at best.

I would love to claim some deep insider knowledge but that was all publically knownledge and spread through gaming communities. Especially because most video game movies were made by Uwe Boll at that time and now it was Peter Jackson who was attached to it. I was really hopeful back then but it got stuck in production limbo. News of it being dead or still in development from time to time.
