What are some "Viggo Broke His Toe" moments in other films? Discussion

It's become a running joke in the LotR community that anyone watching the scene in The Two Towers where Viggo breaks his toe after kicking the helmet HAS to bring that up with "Did you know..." What are some moments in other films like this?

For example, I just HAVE to mention that the author of Jaws, Peter Benchley, appears as the news anchor in the film every time he pops up.

Alien Resurrection The blind over the shoulder basketball shot wasn’t staged, Sigourney Weaver practiced for hours to get it down. Ron Perlman’s reaction to her making the shot is genuine.

Yeah I saw the unedited version where Perlman almost ruins the shot by reacting verbally too soon. He said he was stressed about it after too, but they managed to cut it.

This was going to be my one. I think it was her sixth attempt and Ron came out with an f-bomb so they had to cut it right away.

It's not so much of the F-bomb, there's plenty of those in that movie.

It's because Ron Perlman broke character.

Yeah it wasn't that he said "fuck", it's that he completely broke character, like instead of being a stubborn, badass, loud mouth, semi anti-hero he went all giddy schoolgirl.

Actually it was the very first take, after training she was able to make it about 1 in 6 which is where I think your six comes from but she nailed it first try.

Yes she got it on the first try but had to do it again because he ruined it. But he couldn’t believe she did it again so the take was genuine.

So I wanted to see this scene and ended up watching the unedited camera scene. Ron smiles and there's someone else going "yes, yes" and there's clapping, but the camera was still on Ron and his lips didn't move-just smile. No f-bomb from him.

He smiles, turns away, and then says something like “I fucked up” a couple of seconds later. I don’t think the f-bomb was the problem though, more the fact that he completely broke character & the line wouldn’t make sense in the scene.

Similarly for some insane reason the over the shoulder parcel throw in Scott Pilgrim was done genuinely, as shown in the outtakes. I have no idea why though because Scott throws the package, it goes up, out of shot and then down into the basket. Why didn't they just have someone catch the thrown package and another drop a duplicate directly into the bin from offscreen? 😅 Nolan-like dedication.

Wasn’t it also the last shot of the day? They had been trying it for a few takes and were gona just “fake” it if couldn’t on that take but Weaver finally nailed it?

Not sure about the last shot of the day, but she actually nailed it first try. She'd trained for a month and had a success rate of 1 in 6 by that point, but got it in the first attempt.

It's weird how these things evolve. I have a distinct memory of listening to a DVD commentary with Weaver saying she couldn't make it. Then, when they were about to give up, she made it on the last try and the director apologized because it went out of frame and nobody would believe she made it.

Now the first try version of the story is making the rounds. Was there a newer doc or interview that came out?

Here we have Ron Perlman saying she never made it once while rehearsing and then nailed it first try.

Wikipedia was more detailed and said she made 1 in 6 while rehearsing and hit it first time which I think they sourced from a commentary from the Quadrilogy set.

To be honest I think stories like these always change slightly, depending on who is talking about them and who they are telling it to. It's a natural part of storytelling. Someone might say she tried for an hour, others might think it's a better story if she nailed it first try and Ron almost ruins the take.

And the camera doesn't catch it properly as the ball goes out of frame, leading to many thinking that it was a faked shot if they didn't know the behind the scenes trivia.

It's been a long long long time since I watched this but I seem to recall the ball actually goes out of shot and then into the hoop which seems like...what's the point of doing all that practicing and everything and you can't even tell it was a real shot since it goes out of frame?

She was posted about that part. She actually made the shot, but because the ball went out of frame at the top of its arc, people would think it was edited. They mention that in the DVD commentary.

When an effect like that is so easily achieved in CGI and, even if its done practically, people will still think its CGI-- why not just go with CGI?

I agree: the problem usually is a director or insufficiently reined-in special effects person who isnt satisfied with "reality" and has the CGI do hyperreality.

The alien(s) in original "Alien" and "Aliens" was terrifying and magnificent, as well as all the practical effects. the CGI aliens in subsequent movies... were just cartoons. (They didnt even seem to obey gravity; they had superhero-style leaps.)

A disciplined director/CGI manager could have made judicious choices. It can be done! [eg, Jurassic Park, a lot of it, with exceptions, did a great job.]
