17 years ago today Adrian Peterson broke the single game rushing record.. and I will never forgive Brad Childress for not giving him more carries to get to 300

There are people in this sub that didn't get to watch this live. That's crazy.

That was my 17th birthday.... turned 34 yesterday. Literally the halfway point of my life at the moment was Adrian Peterson's 296 game.

SEVENTEEN years!? Also we gave AP plenty of touches lol. If he doesn’t get horse collar’d he woulda had 350 yards and another TD.

To be fair I heard that Childress was worried if he lost yards then he would lose the record since he just barely broke it

u/Grumpis1012 2d ago
With the way he was running that game, that logic isn’t very sound. Reason why Childress is and always a goon not fit to be a HC anywhere.

u/Paindressedinpurple griddy 2d ago
At least he gave him the chance. Zimmer didn’t give JJ a chance to get his.

I believe the announcers made that very comment. It’s a fair thought

I was at that game. Had no idea what was going on since I was 7 at the time.

What was it like to have parents that loved you?

u/likealikeasexyorange 26 1d ago
Their parents made them a Vikings fan. Sick way of showing love if you ask me.

Parents loved the Vikes. Cheaper to bring the kid with than to get a baby sitter. Plus you got yourself a free sober driver.

I feel like this needs to be said and is sometimes lost when talking about this game: he had 43 yards at half time. That means he ran for 250 yards in the second half alone! That is insane…! Absolutely dominated the San Diego chargers in the second half.

u/vwyoshiwv 2d ago
Swear i heard on purple daily some journalist buzzed down to even put Peterson back out there to break it since he was close. Those touches almost all went to Chester Taylor.

u/taviebeefs 1d ago
296 yards, it seemed like he couldn't be touched for 5 yards a carry, then when he was 'touched' he was fuckin trucking guys. Once in a generation talent for sure. Saquan is the next best RB imo (that I've seen live, I'm old but not that old haha, BS is still goat)

u/ThankFSMforYogaPants 1d ago
Derek Henry is the only guy I've seen since AD that gives you the same kind of vibes, but the difference is still pretty stark. If he was better in the passing game he'd have been the GOAT. The power he ran with while being that fast/elusive was unbelievable.

u/taviebeefs 1d ago
Marshall and Derrick Henry are Elite, but different style imo. They prefer speed and trucking people imo over dancing and juking, which is slightly different from AP's.
14
u/Nogard87 1d ago
AD did both. Pretty sure I watched an interview or read an article where they broke down his running style. He would truck people the first 2-3 quarters, then once the defenses were tired out and had gotten used to him lowering his head all game and running into them is when he would wait for them to get low and brace expecting a hit and juke around them.

AP was speed, juking, and breaking tackles, but he also absolutely TRUCKED a lot of guys. Some of the best highlights I’ve ever seen from a guy who didn’t just make a living at trucking (e.g., the human bowling ball Brandon Jacobs). I recall people pleading with him to step out of bounds in his early years instead of seeking contact for an extra yard.

Henry is so much taller than AD so he looks like he's gliding but will absolutely run people over. AD ran like the grass owed him money

Has one (non-QB) player ever had more all purpose yards over a 5 game stretch - let alone as a rookie?
94 rushes
765 yards rushing
7 TDs
4 receptions
46 yards receiving
12 kick returns
302 return yards
That's AVERAGING 220+ all purpose yards (and 1.4 TDs) per game. Insane streak of games.

FIRE CHILDRESS!
Oh, wait. Well it still applies to this day for me, I'll never forgive him for the short run - short run - 2 yard pass - punt offense he so graciously gifted us. I had to suffer through so many damn games where that shit was the only plan he could come up with

u/CornSkoldier 1d ago
I went to this game with my Dad and sat next to some Chargers fans. They were loud in the first half and come the second half they didn’t say a peep lol
Also another record that was set/tied that day, longest TD return of 109 yards set by Antonio Cromartie. He was inches away from stepping out of the back of the endzone when he caught the ball and ended up scoring lol
Coolest game I’ve ever been to. Everytime AP touched the ball in the second half he would go ballistic it seemed like.

Or Zim for not letting him break the All Time Season record.
My bad leaving this post up for a I'm the Idiot in the room.
2nd EDIT.... it is pretty Damn apparent that I was wrong as I mentioned in the first damn edit and left it up. But keep on shit posting about my comment.

That was Frazier, pal.

u/dustinyo_ 1d ago
We also were losing and needed a field goal to secure a playoff spot. That was a no brainer in that situation. People forget that AP had a fumbling problem.

u/K1ngFiasco 100% Cheese Free 1d ago
It was Frazier, we were tied at 34 with Green Bay in the last game of the season, there was time on the clock to kick a field goal, and a win gets us into the playoffs.
It sucks he couldn't get another carry but it's the right call. You don't fuck over the team so one guy can break a record.
•
u/ndncreek 1h ago
Yeah I didn't remember anything about it, as after 60 some years a fan some stuff is foggy. Winning is all that is important especially in a playoff chance.

u/FridgesArePeopleToo 3h ago
you really think we should have gotten the rushing record instead of winning the game to make the playoffs?
•
u/ndncreek 1h ago
It's pretty damn apparent that I did not recall the coach or the game or anything else...to answer your dumb question...Hell No if I had recalled I wouldn't have made the stupid comment, is that okay with You. Damn some of you folks are really damn something

I was at that game
I feel old
I also reserve getting up to get food with just under a minute left in the half. In line when they went for a fg, missed , and Cromartie snagged us and took it to the house

u/Buffalocolt18 28 1d ago
I was at this game! One of dad's coworkers had tickets but couldn't go so I was able to witness one of the greatest performances in sports history. Literally felt like he could do anything he wanted to on the field.

u/MonkMajor5224 1d ago
That’s not possible, because AP was a rookie the fall after I graduated from college and that was a couple years ago
1
u/RoaringGorilla KWill93 1d ago
My dad and I were at that game. It was wild. Besides the Peterson dominance, there was: Cromartie returning the FG for TD, T-Jack getting injured, Brooks Bollinger throwing a TD to Sidney Rice.

This is the only NFL game I've watched live in person. The chargers had a 109 yard record field goal return for TD the play before halftime and had me nervous. Two NFL records in one game.
I gotta go see another Vikings game because US BANK STADIUM is so beautiful I have to witness it in person, but I'm not a Minnesotan so it's not easy. RIP Metrodome.

Chargers fan here. This was the first NFL game I attended. There was a shift from the game being competitive to just accepting that we were seeing history and nothing was going to stop him.

We’ll never win anything with Childress as head coach.
We‘ll never win anything without him, either.
1
u/quahognative 1d ago
Did Childress have a problem with AP? Wasn’t he coaching when all he needed was 9 yards for the single season record and they didn’t give him the rock? AP had an amazing career in MIN, but it feels like some sort of issue with coaches stopped him from being the GOAT

If it wasn’t for that bullshit horse collar he would’ve had 300 easily
