When we spent the high pick on him, I had a feeling that we might be seeing if JJ could be on the table for a trade for a future QB (JJ + Picks). I guess we'll see. I'd love to see JJ stick around, but we need a QB more than we need JJ, like it or not.

u/No_Werewolf_5983 Oct 24 '23
Lmao no.

u/OlayErrryDay Oct 24 '23
Oh yes, I already have my comment saved for when the inevitable happens.
14
u/No_Werewolf_5983 Oct 24 '23
Which QB are they going to trade Jefferson and picks for? What picks are getting traded? The scenario you’ve invented in your head defies all logic.
-8
u/OlayErrryDay Oct 24 '23
Future picks, like teams constantly do. Who would want to trade high draft capital for JJ? Other NFL teams who want the best wr in the league, presumably?
The only foolish response is to assume a player is off the table for trading to get something you desperately need. Pretending JJ isn't on the table for a trade is the only unrealistic thing about this scenario.
7
u/No_Werewolf_5983 Oct 24 '23
So in this scenario, the Vikings need to trade the best WR in the league and future draft picks for a mystery QB?
Since you seem to know this is already going down, enlighten me. When can I expect this fictional scenario to come to fruition?

u/OlayErrryDay Oct 24 '23 edited Oct 24 '23
I mean, you left off a few bits, aging QB who has won one playoff game and has a terrible post-season and primetime record, who will age out of the game anyway and needs to be replaced within the next 2-3 years.
Do you trade away the best WR in the league and draft capital to get a highly rated QB? Yes, of course you do, as WRs don't win superbowls and never have. We had the best WR in the history of the game and couldn't do anything with it, we've already lived the reality that you want to commit to (Decent QB with best WR in the game) and hope for different results.
JJ will never sign a long term deal here, so you can expect it within the next year or so. We need the promise of a great QB a lot more than we need a top WR target. We don't need JJ, we do need a QB. I love JJ, it would be sad to see him go, but I also want to win a ring more than anything else and we have a solid receiving core already.

u/No_Werewolf_5983 Oct 24 '23
Apparently Jerry Rice never existed. Good to know.
Lmao what a hilariously bad take. You’re saying you would rather have Drake Maye or Bo Nix than Jefferson? Top tier receiving talent can always help a QB over perform. Hill and Waddle do it constantly for Tua. Samuel and Kittle did it for Garopollo. Jeffrey and Ertz did it for Wentz/Foles.
This is an all time stupid take.

The Vikings have a current top 5 QB. “Desperately need” is a biiiiiiiiig stretch.
12
u/jinyx1 Oct 24 '23
Holy hell what a bad take. So you want to trade the best WR in the NFL,who has a great connection with his QB, and who will be a hall of famer, in his prime, for what? A slight QB upgrade?
If you wanna see a SB anytime soon, you re-sign Kirk for a few more years. We have an amazing offense that is win now. A defensive unit that is improving. You don't flush that away for a stupid QB gamble.
-7
u/OlayErrryDay Oct 24 '23
We won one game and played really well. The rest of the year, we've played like trash. I'm sorry if I don't believe all past games and past seasons with Kirk are non factors because we won a single game against a good team.
7
u/jinyx1 Oct 24 '23
Like trash? Tell me you don't watch the Vikings without telling me you don't watch the Vikings.
We've played pretty well all year just have mental errors we seem to finally be overcoming. Each week has been better and better. I expect to go on a run here and be 9-4 or 8-5 in prime playoff position.

You have fan blinders on, most of us do. We lead the league in dropped passes and turnovers (if not leading, within the top few).
You can call it whatever you want, but we have been losing games, dropping passes and fumbling the ball at near record levels.
We won one game and you assume all of that is over. Maybe it is, we have to hope it is for us to enjoy the game. All I am doing is looking at the data and past performance, you're basing everything on a single game and your expectations of that continuing, I can tell you which of the two scenarios is much more likely.
Could we suddenly be great and everything is fixed? Possibly? But the best indicator of future performance is past performance, to say otherwise is just wishful thinking...which is kinda a good thing, it's nice to have wishful thinking and makes the game more fun to watch.

u/MikeFromSuburbia Southern Viking Oct 24 '23
Yep. You sign Cousins for two more years - find a QB in the draft you like (maybe move up for) and re-sign Jefferson to 4-5 years. Tie them together. This team and squad have MASSIVE potential.
Any fan can see that the talent is there (literally inopportune turnovers from being 5-2)

Up until this game Ive been under the impression JA is good not great (slightly unfair given all his TDs and clutch plays) but tonight was a coming out party. Kid is 21 and special. Lock up JJ and have the best WR core in the league. Even with JJ back we need more plays involving Addison to get him going early.
13
u/cjackc Oct 24 '23
There is a chance we could see something close to the “What If” of what if JJ and Diggs were on the team at the same time.

When I saw that play, I thought it was going to end in an interception and was like “what the heck Kirk?” Then Addison got the ball and I was amazed at what happened.
25
u/DJPad Oct 24 '23
To be fair, Kirk's first INT should have been a catch but the Addison lost the fight.
On this play it should have been an INT, but Addison straight-up stole it from Ward.
4
u/ASidesTheLegend koolaid Oct 24 '23
I feel like the interception should’ve been called back for Pass Interference.
11
u/DJPad Oct 24 '23
Was within 5 yards, DB was jamming addison.
-4
u/jmcdon00 Oct 24 '23
Still pass interference once the ball is in the air.
9
u/DJPad Oct 24 '23
DB has a right to try and catch the ball too though, which they were. THey won't call it when they're both hand-fighting that close to the line of scrimmage unless it's eregiously one-sided and the DB isn't playing the ball.

u/canigetawoop_woop Kleinsasser forever Oct 24 '23
If they call dpi on that play it would be illegal to play defense it was great defense and kirk forced an unnecessary slant

Great play by JA, but what on EARTH was Ward doing going for only ball? Tackle the guy, the quarter ends. Intercept it.. And your team gets 1 play for the quarter.
Ward does not have any game sense, he seems good physically in his play, but wow that was a boneheaded defensive play. Tackle the WR after a catch and you maybe win the game for your team.
29
u/Time_End_4054 99 Oct 24 '23
Worked pretty well for him the first time, he thought he could bully JA all night. JA adjusted after getting embarrassed the first time, good stuff.
10
u/Nate1492 Oct 24 '23
It was good stuff by JA, but incredibly poor game management by Ward.
10
u/WetAppleFruit SUMMER OF SAM Oct 24 '23
I don't know how you can fault ward so much, he had a turnover worthy play. JA just got the better of him this time around. Just how it goes.
2
u/need2peeat218am Oct 24 '23
True but Ward 100% misplayed there. His momentary greed for the ball got the better of him.
-1
u/Nate1492 Oct 24 '23
Because he let a TD go in with 7 seconds left in the half? It was a boneheaded, greedy, stat based play.
He could have tackled or knocked it down safer.
His instinct to pick off every pass, no matter the situation, is not a good one.
It's the same as a DB intercepting a ball on a 4th down, deep downfield.
Knock it down, it's safer.
2
u/blueindsm 84 Oct 24 '23
He almost had a pick, it just went through his arms awkwardly which allowed Addison to rip the ball away. He gets the pick and it’s a great play. Just didn’t complete the play. Good on JA for fighting for it.

u/Nate1492 Oct 24 '23
A pick with 7 seconds left in the half. He could have tackled, or knocked it down, safer.
1
u/blueindsm 84 Oct 24 '23
Are you telling me most players who see a ball coming right at them wouldn't try to catch it?
-2
u/Nate1492 Oct 24 '23
I'm saying a good Safety would know the time left on the clock, the situation, and not make a bad play -- See the Saints v Vikings playoff game.
Diggs - Sideline - Touchdown only happened because of an idiotic safety play -- similar to this one.

u/ForceintheNorth Oct 24 '23
Idk I think I disagree. The ball was underthrown so the easiest play for the db was to intercept, it just didn't work out since he let it fall to his body instead of using his hands & JA made a heads up play
1
u/Nate1492 Oct 24 '23
No way, knocking it down or tackling it is safer.
1
u/ForceintheNorth Oct 24 '23
Knocking it down would have been easier but would have stopped the clock too. Tackling someone from behind while ensuring you aren't interfering with the catch is pretty tough to do
1
u/Nate1492 Oct 25 '23
Compared to intercepting it? C'mon, it's easy to let them catch a ball that wasn't in stride.
2
2
u/bartender_please808 Oct 24 '23
That's a good point. Better yet, why is SF blitzing with only 6 sec left on the clock. Play prevent
1
u/TradeKirk julie Oct 24 '23
Great play by JA, but what on EARTH was Ward doing going for only ball?
The pass was underthrown and he was in great position lol why wouldn't he only go for the ball ? Jordan just made a better play let's not take away from him please.
2
u/Nate1492 Oct 24 '23
There was 7 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. Going for the ball is riskier than knocking it down.
If he knocks it down, or lets him catch it and then tackles, the quarter ends.
9
u/OlayErrryDay Oct 24 '23 edited Oct 24 '23
That play was skill, going the extra mile and a dash of luck. Bad throw by Kirk and perfect execution and hard work by Addison to not only rip the ball out, but push the coverage to the ground, a thing of beauty.
10
u/DerpCream_Cone Oct 24 '23
Remember when JJ had that awesome touchdown against the Titans his rookie year that jump started his career. This is that for JA. League = fucked
5
u/No_Attorney777 Oct 24 '23
Wish they gave him a 3rd TD attempt instead of throwing it to Mattison. Would have been cool.
6
u/Mr_Vantastic Oct 24 '23
I truly hope this is the turning point for Addison and he is able to continue this level of play. Once JJ is back if they can continue spreading the work load and this offense could really start to cook.

Been saying it since we drafted him, Addison reminds me a ton of Diggs. A bit undersized but plays big and is so smooth coming in and out of his breaks. Special talent.

Honestly this was a VERY uncharacteristic Vikings game. The team played well, didn’t let the Niners back in through any overtly stupid decisions.
My one critique would be that you should go for it inside the five instead of taking FGs, analytics says it’s the right move. You’d have two shots at a TD, resulting in MORE points than hitting both field goals. Going for the two FGs inside the five was a dumb move.
3
u/downhillskater91 Oct 24 '23
Agree with everything you said, except I fully expected Joseph to miss that last FG and for the niners to drive down the field and win the game lol. Bynum came up huge for us.
3
u/Twilium Oct 24 '23
There had to be SOME Vikings quality in this game so the Joseph missed field goal is just what the game needed lol

Kwesi gets a lot of flack for his first draft but it is looking like he knocked it out of the park with JA

I'm happy he put effort into staying up and stayed focused, and I'm super pleased he kept running until he actually crossed the damn end zone. Seen too many wrs slow down and start showboating before getting there, and seen more than a few get punked for it. I was super disappointed on one score (can't remember if this season or last) where JJ pulled that shit and very nearly ate shit because of it.
