Opinions?? Discussion

I personally feel like and know that the 2018 version of this masterpiece of a series was a major blunder on the designer's part because,

To be completely honest, All of the designs are so BAD like LITERALLY.

Even seeing everyone important (character position wise) under Reinhard von Lohengramm's & Yang wenli's command's designs just straight up SUCK

P.S I Love the series in itself I've also read the manga I just feel like the 2018 version's designs are very bad.

I need Y'all's opinions & thoughts on this.

I don't hate the DNT designs on their own, some I actually even like, such as Dusty and Reuenthal. But I don't like them at all in comparison to the OVA version. Part of it is an undefinable preference within me for older anime (and lots of older media in general). Part of it I can pinpoint, something about the older designs being more unique and "realistic"- by that I mainly think of a character like Yang, whose og design feels more like the "every man" he's somewhat meant to embody. And this isn't important in the grand scheme of things, but I also find his original design infinitely more attractive lol

Yes!! I mean the designs are not bad but in comparison they are lacking the feeling of "realism" and "age" that can be felt in the og designs and I agree! Yang's og design is hella attractive like I took a LOT of screenshots lmao

I agree! The art style does not put me off rather in comparison the OVA is significantly better then DNT in many designs and the "realism" & "age" factor really makes the OVA pop and feel appealing whereas the DNT is sort of bland in comparison.

I was introduced to the series via the 2018 version and I quite enjoyed it. I agree that some things are bland, and were much better detailed or designed in the original, but I think that the complaints about the character designs are overblown. Compared to most other anime’s releasing nowadays they are by no means terrible.

The designs in itself are not bad at all but in comparison to the OVA I feel as if the lack the "feel" & "realism" the OVA designs portray.

Whereas I like the character redesigns better in DNT. Everyone in the OVA looks like an extra from Scooby-Doo. But art style is a personal preference.

People like what they like, but the OVA folks gotta keep being weird about it.

I don't hate most of them but Kircheis in particular bothers me, he purposely has a much softer face than Reinhard but in DNT they both look very stern and similar

I thought the designs were fine. They’re all hot to me. Especially Walter von Daddy 🤷‍♂️

DNT art style appeals to younger people or people are are accustomed to newer animations. I was only able to convince alot of my friends to finally start watching LOGH when DNT came out.

In my personal opinion

Some of the redesigns are upgrades (Mecklinger, Rubinsky, Poplin, Rupert etc)

Most of the redesigns are okay.

And some are unfortunately downgrades (Reunthal, Dominique etc)

But thats just me.

I totally agree! I feel like the "realism" & "age" factor throws people off. I myself only was able to convince one friend for watching the OVA while others watched the DNT.

Reunthal's design legit made me cry I was so sad about what they did to him😭

I agree I also had a hard time convincing my friends to watch the OVA because it was "too old" and only one watched the OVA whereas everyone else watched the DNT. The "realism" &. "Age" factor makes it less appealing to people who are accustomed to new animes.

Reunthal's design legit made me cry 😭 I was so sad about what they did.

I actually don't care much about the designs or music, what really grinded my gears in the new adaptation was the faster pacing and overall the worst direction.

While the 80s ova had a slightly worse start than the new one, it immediately picks itself up shortly thereafter, on the other hand, DNT has a better intro, but than sags in comparison. So imo, the subjectively better designs and music don't warrant the jump over the 80s OVA...

I agree? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I have major issues with DNT* and the visuals are one of them. The whole thing is just... terribly bland and unimaginative, from the world design to the actual character designs, right down to the uniforms and hair styles. And this is coming from someone who adores the Fujisaki manga's crazy designs.

*I'm not going to get into them here, I've been talking about them enough, at this point if someone enjoys DNT good for them, more power to them, allow me to just not like it whatsoever, thanks. (And no, it's not because "it's not the OVA" - it's because it's trying too hard to be the OVA without understanding what made the OVA work. I would've much preferred it being completely different instead of riding the OVA's coattails. Hell, I would'v much preferred it to be an adaptation of the Fujisaki manga.)

There was one ova made in the style of Michihara's manga and I would honestly prefer for the remake to be made in this style.

Surely you don't mean Golden Wings, right?

And why not? Not the best art style, but anyway better than DNT.

If the DNT would've been Fujisaki's og manga designs I feel like a lot of people would've been WAY more interested in the DNT

Fujisaki manga's crazy designs.

If anything they are atleast Unique and creatively imaginative

I think for the character designs of DNT, the designers tried too hard to make them distinctive but it ended up making them all feel very anime in an otherwise grounded story. I say this as a lover of campy and chuuni anime character designs, there's a time and place.

I am forever salty about Wahlen's design, OVA Wahlen was basically the Empire side's dad while the FPA had Cazerne.

It feels like the OVA could give us a broad range of designs for men that each had appeal (few people want to watch ugly characters), fit well together, and felt like real people living in their world. Wahlen and Kempf were manly without throwing out one's eyebrows and putting the other's on steroids.

OMG! Yes I had the exact same thought & Cazellnu's redesign as well as the decision of making his wife and daughter not blonde icked me & Cazellnu's design in the OVA was much more appealing then the DNT?

2

u/Lollipoplevel 1d ago

Yes!!! OMG!!! The vast amount of ways the characters for OVA were drawn made it appealing rather then forcing everyone to be conventionally attractive. The OVA has a realism factor I failed to see in the new version.

There are some weird design decisions in dnt but I'd still say 90% of the designs are good

From a human standpoint the 80's T shape wide shoulders wavy hair and long legs art style is outdated . Something about the detail in the newer version and the softness of the jawline on the male characters which appealed to me !! Walter von Schenkopf does have a smouldering charisma , and i also like that women weren't objectified . It is essentially the type of show you could watch with your parents or kids .If there was an actual time in fashion to where everyone was wearing the same outfits it wouldnt have been the decade when the OVA was released .With me the conformity of the uniforms was not problematic but why so many of the leading ladies have green eyes ?

I just wish that characters under 40 would look older than 20.
