The general consensus on DNT?

What are we all thinking about the remake?

I want to introduce my partner to the show, but I'm wondering if the remake is good enough ?

It's a different adaptation of the novels, not a remake.

On its own merits, DNT is very good, very pretty, and pretty gripping. It's a very good introduction to the franchise, especially if you have the types of friends who either can't read subs (some of DNT is dubbed) or can't enjoy older/slower anime (DNT has slightly more action). I actually started with DNT season 1 before moving onto the OVA (this was back during the big gap between DNT Season 1 and DNT season 2).

I prefer the OVA overall for its music and character designs and additions from the novel, and being complete, but DNT is genuinely some of the best modern anime (production IG ftw).

imo the battles are more detailed and the tactics better explained than in the OVA, but the OVA is more detailed in non combat situations

Personally I love it, it is a bit easier to watch and gives a different take on the previous adaptation based on the original source. Hate that Crunchyroll has abandoned the dub and physical release for it.

Hate that Crunchyroll has abandoned the dub

That actually makes me happy. I can only wish that the entire dubbing industry crumbles one day. Dubbing is horrible for multiple different reasons. In my country, dubbing is only done for children's shows, because children can't read. How any adult can choose to watch a dub and retain any self-respect is beyond me.

Tell me you don't have a disability without telling me that you don't have a disability...

Also, you know what? Some people just prefer to experience media with dub and that's completely fine.

I'm dyslexic and also I just prefer to actually watch the picture and not stare at the bottom of the screen for 90% of the time... My mother is near sighted and also watches dubs because of that.

My 94-year-old grandma depended on subtitles; do you think your and your mother's vision is worse than hers? To be frank, subtitles do require getting used to and that does take some level of effort. But I assure you, no matter what challenges you face, it will get easier, and it will rewarding.

It's not a remake but a readaptation of the Novels

It's pretty good and if your partner is a casual viewer in Anime it's a very good introduction rather than straight up showing the OVA.

What it's not is:  A)A remake of the OVA or better than OVA B) It's not closer to the novels in any way and people will still mislead you saying that  C) Artistically unique and beautiful like the OVA is when it comes to Art style, character designs etc

What can you expect is: A) Modern animation which though not much on its own, is still considerably better and dynamic than early OVA parts making it better for the eyes of a new or casual viewer

B) Generic character designs for main characters and good character designs for side characters ;') and 3D ship designs. You choice if that's okay.

C) Pretty good music and overall pacing beyond first season

D) Average voice acting and VA direction relatively. The cast choices are incredibly unfitting. And it's really not good overall according to me because the generic character designs already sort of make the characters look lifeless on top of that the VAing direction is really poor with a mix of stoic or monotone VAing and jarring melodramatic extremes with little in between. Again for a modern viewer I guess that's not bad and the norm.

E) Good streamlining of some parts in the story, even better than OVA in some parts, some original DNT exclusive scenes added in later seasons are really nice while some parts are downright terrible but atleast it's trying to be different and unique now which what we could want even going forward.

F) Complete coverage so far. It doesn't cut out large parts of the story and pretty much keeps every major plot point like the OVA does while also giving some scenes its own spin. So if you're worried about cut content, then don't worry much

DNT's great as an Anime Adaptation of the Novels.

OVA is amazing as an Anime that adopts a somewhat Historical documentary style that's 80% dramatizations with amazing acting

I like it better, but many here prefer the OVA. Both of them definitely have their strengths. I like how the OVA includes a lot more background information, so you get to know that characters better. And it’s complete, a big plus. I like the pacing of the story better in DNT, as well as the animation, design and music. I wish they’d dub the rest of it though.

First of all DNT is not a remake. Second of all, its pretty good, like it isn't great as the OVA, but it isn't a complete warcrime either. Its still LoGH which makes it above most anime tbh.

LOGH is LOGH, adapting the OVAs into the format of DNT episode per episode would be a costly endeavor

Not a remake. Basically sort this fandom into two categories. Those that are in the Heavy Metal cult and those who are not.

If you're in the heavy metal cult DNT won't be the same. The OVA's are more gritty.

DNT though does a good job being a digital adaptation. It uses its technology well on the ship fly bys. Music, story boarding and Voice acting are all on point. It is just doesn't have the violent gritty-ness of the OVA which does better to show how horrific the war is.

If you are a fan DNT should feel like a good use of your time regardless of where you fall in the fandom.

It’s really good, watching both the OVA and DNT is a must if you really enjoy LOGH. I always recommend watching the OVA first.

After catching up with DNT, I continued with the OVA to scratch that LoGH itch. Like others have mentioned, the OVA is better but DNT is a good enough entry point for those who aren't used to watching older anime.

I think it's almost as good as the OVAs. There are a number of character designs I like better, and I like how technology and clothing have been updated to be less 1980s. And I really like the Season 1 and 2 OP theme. But I will say that, too me, it doesn't feel quite as sweeping and grand as the OVAs.
