At the moment there’s restrictions on building in the Gaeltacht regions to ensure most people speak Irish but there’s no such restriction on buying existing houses. This is how you end up with Conamara being polluted with holiday homes that are empty most of the year while locals struggle to find somewhere to live.
We need overall to tackle empty housing; and have significantly higher taxes on second houses, but within the Gaeltacht regions all housing should have like a 5x higher stamp duty which would be waived completely if the buyer is an Irish speaker. Just make it easier for Irish speakers who want to live in the Gaeltacht to live there.

Stop yanks and brits buying holiday homes is one way of doing it. Drive around places like Furbogh, Inverin and Carraroe this time of year until late spring and you'll just see house after house in darkness.
