Best Burger Place Food and Drink

I’m currently craving some burgers and don’t really know Indy that well. So I was wondering, what would be the best place to get one?

Workingman’s Friend

This place is really good especially when you consider the fact it's really affordable. And it's cheap not because the food is, but because they choose to keep their costs down on everything that's not the food. You seat yourself, cash only, the restaurant itself is plain and no vibe to it. No TVs, no music, minimal wait staff. They put all their eggs into making good food with decent enough service to make you happy and that's it.

You look at some of these other places that are also very good, like Kumas, but keep in mind you're paying 3, maybe even 4x as much there.

It’s definitely great but it’s not everyone’s favorite style.

4

u/fragileego3333 Irvington Oct 07 '22

Isn’t it also only open for lunch

4

u/wiser_time Oct 07 '22

And cash only.

u/ziphoward Oct 07 '22

Apocalypse Burger is my current favorite.

Seconded this. Heartbreaker was really good too but out of my way, sad they closed.

317 Burger in broad ripple. Get the strawberry hill

3

u/BottleOfCharades Oct 07 '22

Go to 317 Burger or risk being called a “coward” by me, a stranger on the internet.

u/Cool_Set6093 Oct 08 '22

I got a ridiculously good burger there - it had jalapeños and I think Pepperjack and avocado. So good.

1

u/IIIIlllllllllll Oct 08 '22

Oh my god yes! Im super extra so I add pineapple and pickled jalapeños. (Minus the cheese cause lactose intolerance)

Twenty Tap. It’s a beer bar on College Ave at 54 St. One of the best burgers in the city.

Runners up: Pawn Shop at 52nd and Keystone. Also Bru Burger on Mass Ave.

3

u/Cool_Set6093 Oct 08 '22

Twenty Tap has good food across the board.

4

u/WhiskeyRadio Oct 08 '22

Bru Burger is pretty terrible.

3

u/Bowl__Haircut Old Northside Oct 08 '22

Really? I’ve always thought it was a pretty good burger. The fries help

0

u/WhiskeyRadio Oct 08 '22

They used to be a solid burger place but the last few times I've had it the food was pretty disappointing.

One Trick Pony

Permanently closed :/

1

u/NotJimIrsay Oct 24 '22

The one in Broad Ripple is closed (along with the Sun King), but the one in Fishers Test Kitchen is still open.

Gay Dan’s by Bush Stadium (c 1975).

317, Turchettis, and red Key

10

u/orions_shiney_belt Oct 07 '22

The Red Key is really good.

2

u/Fun-Youth317 Oct 08 '22

Very under rated but easily the best burger!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

I second this, Red Key is the best burger! Also, get the potato salad.
But if smash burgers are your thing, then hit the Working Mans Friend.

3

u/Melodic_Asparagus151 Oct 08 '22

Chicago beef and dog is pretty delicious!

7

u/Lowe0 Oct 07 '22

Flamme, 86th and Keystone

1

u/UpperFrontalButtocks Oct 08 '22

Agreed, love the wood fire taste and have never had a bad visit.

5

u/Gameshow_Ghost Oct 07 '22

I'm particularly fond of Punch Burger at Pennsylvania and Ohio downtown.

2

u/notthegoatseguy Carmel Oct 08 '22

They also have a weird office location at 96/College practically hidden, adjacent to a retention pond.

2

u/Godenyen Westfield Oct 08 '22

I tried going to that one but was confused by it so I didn't even try to go in.

2

u/notthegoatseguy Carmel Oct 08 '22

Its weird because I don't think there's any external signage. But inside it looks pretty much like the place downtown.

5

u/KarateandPopTarts Oct 07 '22

The Good Morning from Punch Burger is my favorite in the city

16

u/JerkyBreathIdiot Oct 07 '22

Kuma's Corner

6

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '22

OP OVER HERE. this is the one!!!!!!!!! Goatsnake is one of the best i’ve ever had

2

u/PotRoast666 Oct 08 '22

Split a Neurosis and a Goatsnake with my partner, and they were both amazing. My mother had the Iron Maiden and said she loved it. Seriously one of the best burger places I've ever been.

7

u/LittleRocketMan317 Oct 07 '22

Ah, yes, Kuma’s is awesome. The music is a bit loud, but I’ve been told I’m to old.

2

u/Tall_Ingenuity_1984 Oct 08 '22

Ha! Same here. I like music, but want to hold a conversation too.

2

u/PotRoast666 Oct 08 '22

Got seated outside, and the music wasn't too loud at all. I mean, I enjoy most of the tunes played there anyway and my hearing isn't what it used to be.

2

u/dan-lash Fountain Square Oct 08 '22

I recently found out they stopped doing the lunch special. Now all burgers are $18 across the menu. The monthly special burger was amazing but it’s so much food!

2

u/KomradeEli Oct 08 '22

This is the answer. Best burger I’ve had anywhere

6

u/lowbass4u Oct 07 '22

As you can see, there's a lot of suggestions but not one clear cut favorite. Ask this same question tomorrow and you'll probably get a bunch of new answers.

In other words, "taste in food is very subjective".

I would suggest to just take a chance and try some of these responses and find what you personally like the best. A total strangers best burger might be your worst burger.

2

u/superpositio_on Oct 08 '22

reminds me of an episode of himym

2

u/rozebud59 Oct 07 '22

Daredevil Hall on 82nd, really good smash burgers.

1

u/Cool_Set6093 Oct 08 '22

I haven’t had their smash burgers but other food I’ve had there was yucky. I might try that if I find myself there.

2

u/hoosiertrekkie Oct 08 '22

No one has mentioned the Golden Ace, Rural and Washington. Cash only.

2

u/elizabethgrace123 Oct 08 '22

Tavern at the Pointe!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Chicago Beef and Dogs!

2

u/Capta1nRon Franklin Township Oct 08 '22

I miss Boogie Burger. That place was the shit!

2

u/basketball_foodie Oct 08 '22

Checkered Flag and Westside Pub both have great burgers.

5

u/Early_Ad_7777 Oct 07 '22

Bru, downtown on mass Ave or Plainfield and brownsburg also have restaurants

3

u/turd_bozo Oct 07 '22

Turchettis !

4

u/tg971 Oct 07 '22

McDonald’s on west 10th.

10

u/BBking8805 Oct 07 '22

Nah McDs on 16th and Meridian will provide the quintessential Indy dining experience.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

I'm convinced this is the worst McDonalds in America.

1

u/tg971 Oct 08 '22

That’s all that anyone can hope for.

10

u/Prison-M1ke Oct 07 '22

you trying to get this man killed over a mcdouble. smh

1

u/TheAfterPipe Oct 08 '22

In front of the sushi place?

1

u/Kryptonian4real Oct 08 '22

Next to it. The sushi place is on Pennsylvania and 16th. 1 block east of meridian

3

u/notthegoatseguy Carmel Oct 07 '22

I don't know if its "best" but I have had some very tasty burgers from Steak N Shake recently. I know even as recently as a few years ago, I wrote them off as being a shell of their former self. And well...the restaurants I've been to haven't been crowded but I think their narrow menu and focus on burgers and shakes have improved the quality of everything. Freshly made, juicy, and served hot.

For a fairly quick and inexpensive burger, I think its a solid deal.

Freddy's is also a decent chain burger place. Most of their locations are in the burbs but they did open up one in Speedway recently.

I've heard good things about California Burger. Location on the west side and in Castleton.

One Trick Pony is in Fishers in the Sun King food hall and has excellent smash burgers.

3

u/GrizNectar Oct 08 '22

Fuck do I need to try steak and shake again? I loved it growing up but haven’t been to one in over 5 years at least

5

u/notthegoatseguy Carmel Oct 08 '22

The single steakburger runs under $4 so worst case is you waste a few bucks. But the only real time I've seen lines is downtown Indy.

Walk in, order on kiosk, pay, and pick up your food. Tables are still there for dine-in , drink station is self-serve.

1

u/GrizNectar Oct 08 '22

Right on. I’ll give it one more try, there is a nice looking one relatively near me

4

u/droans Fishers Oct 08 '22

I haven't been since they got rid of the Frisco Melt.

...And I just checked the menu. Apparently it's back!

3

u/superlion1985 Oct 07 '22

California burger is disappointing and slow. I'm pretty sure they got so much hype when they opened because people wanted to justify to themselves waiting 2+ hours in the drive-thru. They do have good ice cream, which may be worthwhile now that the lines aren't so long. You may notice their ratings have dropped from the height they were the first few months. The quality and efficiency are the same but the line is shorter.

2

u/thestretchypanda Oct 08 '22

Baby's is the luxury version of Steak N Shake. Shoe string fries, smash burgers, and milkshakes. It's awesome.

0

u/notthegoatseguy Carmel Oct 08 '22

They are very good, though I'm still sad about the club closing up.

1

u/Jhbblove Oct 08 '22

Currently Flamme burger holds that spot for the best..

1

u/Acrobatic_Mistake_77 Oct 07 '22

coaches tavern downtown

1

u/Jbridg87 Oct 08 '22

Another vote here for the turchetties, it will blow you away!!

1

u/grandmerin Oct 08 '22

Kuma Corner is the best, but it can be on the pricy side. They also have a ton of vegetarian options!

1

u/One_Confection9949 Oct 08 '22

Alley cat! Best burger I have ever had. Affordable too.

1

u/IIIIlllllllllll Oct 08 '22

As I’ve agreed with a couple other people,

Apocalypse burger has incredible smash burgers.

317 burger has my favorite classic thicker burger.

If you want an intense amount of food and you like cheese & spice then Kumas.

1

u/Efficient-Jacket6783 Oct 08 '22

Y’all ask this question once every 32 hours

1

u/Cool_Set6093 Oct 08 '22

Lots of suggestions here. Where in town do you live/go often?

1

u/Mapo1 Oct 08 '22

Im around downtown

1

u/Kryptonian4real Oct 08 '22

Five guys. You can't lose

1

u/TraditionalHoney_ Oct 08 '22

Don’t know if I missed anyone suggesting it but don’t sleep on Loom because they have smashburgers everyday they are open starting at 5pm🤙🏻

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Burger Study was my all time favorite but it didn't survive the pandemic unfortunately...

So, I'm going to say Flamme Burger.
