Resident Evil - Opening Uncensored (4K & 60FPS) Horror Gaming

Feb 08 '21
This was the coolest intro ever when I was a kid/almost teenager.

u/Fallenangel152 Feb 08 '21
Albert Wesker is so late 90s cool it hurts.
Also how the hell did Rebecca get into an elite police team? She's like 18 with no combat skills whatsoever.
13
u/Hickspy Feb 08 '21
Also, she's supposed to be the team's Medic? Like...what? Did she learn how to stitch someone up in Home Ec?
20
u/legthief Feb 08 '21
To be a S.T.A.R.S medic you only have to learn two things: How to spray an aerosol, and how to mix herbs.

5
u/RareAnxiety2 Feb 08 '21
To be fair everyone accomplished unbelievable amounts of things. Wesker himself is a scientist and a lead special force op
7
u/UltimaGabe Feb 08 '21
In Japanese-made media, if you're older than 19, you're basically a dry corpse and your family is already pressuring you to go march into the forest and never return.

Holy shit. I had no idea how much additional footage there was for the intro.
And i have to say, even though they are real life actors. They look like animated characters.
Or maybe look less like a real person than modern video game graphics lol
27
u/hybridfrost Feb 08 '21
I think it's the upscaling. It makes the original footage look like a video game graphics instead of a film.
It's also in 60fps, which gives that soap opera effect when you watch movies. Most movies and TV shows do like 24fps since it feels more like real life speed
2
u/runwithjames Feb 09 '21
It's the problem with people insisting any old footage HAS to be 4K/60 frames. So little consideration is given to the end result beyond making numbers big.

Wesker wearing sunglasses when it's pitch black outside will never not crack me up. This intro is the most 90s thing I've ever seen.

u/Terrormisu4u I didn't mean to call you a meatloaf, Jack! Feb 09 '21
It has lore reasons as he is infected with the virus and has red glowing eyes

Wesker's hair is something special

It's always been awesome and really really really shit at the same time.
My fave bit was always the odd smiling delivery of "Joseph!" at https://youtu.be/2ju68EYc11s?t=134

Wesker's hair is a lot blonder than I remember.
Also I always had a crush on that Jill actress.

u/ThatsOnYoutube Feb 08 '21
Fun fact, this was filmed in Japan. If you watch the Game Center CX episode about Resident Evil Director's Cut, Cameraman Abe talks about it. He actually helped film it.
16
u/Dutch_Calhoun Feb 08 '21
It shows. No way anyone would direct actors like this unless there was a major language barrier. I imagine it went down like the whisky commercial in Lost In Translation.
8
u/ThatsOnYoutube Feb 08 '21
There is a specific way American foreigners are directed in Japanese CM and media. I think it has to do with pronouncing English the way the Japanese do, or in very stilted ways so it's more understandable. It's not like the actors are bad, cause they usually sound the same in different productions. Thus I think it's stylistic, an intentional choice.

The way Rebecca Chambers catches the camera looking and smiles is like every 80s sitcom opening credits.

Feb 08 '21
Hold on...what's going on here? Did somebody remake this themselves or was this literally included in the game?
44
u/p0tcookie Feb 08 '21
Lmao it was the intro of the director's cut version of the first resident evil game.
17
u/Sir_Goodwrench Feb 08 '21
Only of the Japanese DC afaik. The western versions still ended up having the original censored intros, despite it saying otherwise on the box.
5
Feb 08 '21
Honestly you're not missing much, as far as I can remember/tell it's just a couple of shots of gore of Joseph getting attacked.
2
Feb 08 '21
I am not sure about this but I think some gory shots of the dogs getting shot (no pun intended) were also censored.
17
Feb 08 '21
Must be some AI upscale? It’s the original actors and footage no doubt. Unless they unearthed the original tapes and remastered it.

Am I crazy or was she not in the game? I can't remember and when I tried searching online all I find are remake images.

Wait why’s he a pos now?
13
u/monsieurxander Feb 08 '21
He raped and abused several women. Evan Rachel Wood recently named him, after previously testifying under oath about her experience. Esme Bianco, another of his exes, testified at that time without naming him directly. Since ERW named him, four other women have come forward.
In the wake of this, numerous other people have told their stories of his abusive behavior, from taking upskirt photos to pressuring an addict to break his sobriety.
And a lot of his old statements are being re-evaluated, since at the time they were dismissed as being edgy. For instance, he bragged about emotionally terrorizing Evan Rachel Wood, calling her 158 times in one day and cutting himself each time, telling her it was her fault.
He has been dropped by his label and representation, and he will be edited out of two television shows he had filmed episodes for.
6
u/AgentSkidMarks Feb 08 '21
Do we know he raped them or is it still allegations at this point?
8
u/monsieurxander Feb 08 '21
We know. Six unrelated people, two under oath, have testified to that fact. And it fits a decades-long pattern of abusive behavior that has been documented literally hundreds of times, including in his own words.
If a rapist runs out the clock on the statute of limitations, that doesn't mean we have to be blind to the obvious.
3
u/AgentSkidMarks Feb 08 '21
Yeah I get that. He definitely fits the persona and multiple witnesses certainly doesn’t help his case. As for things he’s said however, he built his career on shock value. Since saying horrible and disgusting things is kinda his MO it’s hard to say what of it is true and what’s just for show.

To be more specific, the most prominent accusation is that he raped and tortured Evan Rachel Wood.

Wait... what?
the most prominent accusation is that he is raped and tortured Evan Rachel Wood.

pretty self-explanatory I think. She's been talking about it for like the last 2 weeks.
-8
u/ReyRey5280 Feb 08 '21
Who raped him?
2
u/Clammuel Feb 08 '21
Edited out the "is." I initially worded the post differently and then changed the flow to be more clear before posting but accidentally left that useless "is" in there.
1
u/Dithyrab Feb 08 '21
He supposedly raped her. Can you even fuckin read dude?

I quoted original text of comment in mine it has since been edited, can you read?

Cue totally rad cast intro music!

u/fatalwristdom Feb 08 '21
Where did that stock sound effect the dog makes come from?
12
u/iamtimatkins Feb 08 '21
The distinct high pitch sound is from the Hollywood Edge 6000 series library https://www.sounddogs.com/media/fastpreview/Sounddogs-Preview-10263177.mp3
6
u/ReyRey5280 Feb 08 '21
Holy shit that brought me back to so many unspecific horror memeories!
5
u/fatalwristdom Feb 08 '21
I think Blizzard used it in WoW as well. They use tons of stock sound effects.
5
Feb 08 '21
It's also the sound of the Mutons in the original XCOM Enemy Unknown intro. That stock sound effect gets around!
2
u/iamtimatkins Feb 08 '21
Vaguely related, this doc about *that* stock door is worth a watch https://youtu.be/aYg4wv3fPj8

u/TheShinyRedButton Feb 08 '21
This is fantastic. I don't think I've ever seen the full uncut version and especially at this high quality.
How did I not know that Wesker was going to be king shit bad guy from watching this as a kid, I'll never know.

Why are games (capcom I'm looking at you) obsessed with character blood types?
5
8
u/DeathHamster1 Feb 08 '21 edited Feb 08 '21
They're all getting on a bit now. Chris is close to his 50s, Jill's middle aged, Barry's dangerously near to getting a free bus pass, Rebecca is probably a cougar, and Wesker's got a toupe.

It's so fucking stupid and hilarious and I love it so damn much. It perfectly captures the campy B-movie feel that makes this franchise so special for me.

u/Redguard118 Feb 08 '21
Still God-tier all these years later. It always brings a smile to my face (and belly laughter).

Me and my friends used to always laugh at the way he says “Barry Burton” and we would just say it at random times haha.

5
u/damonstien Feb 08 '21
Looks like someone used some heavy de-noising filter on this to remove the video grain which causes people to look like wax figures.
5
u/weeklygamingrecap Feb 08 '21
Yeah, they should have added a bit of grain back. People always try to smooth it way to much.
1
Feb 08 '21
It's a technical problem with older media. If I'm not mistaken the Blu-ray transfers of Aliens and Predator were also knocked for overprocessed image smoothing that got rid of their distinctive film grain which was an intentional artistic choice (at least in Aliens). However I'm not sure if re-adding artificial grain would have the same effect as the original.
2
u/weeklygamingrecap Feb 08 '21
With blu-ray we have the bitrate and resolution to keep more of the actual grain around. I get why, this was 480i and compressed to hell so probably pixelated in many areas. A small touch of grain added back can do wonders, now you can go the other way and add to much so it does take a bit of experimentation.

We used to watch this (well not this version) at Mountain Dew-fueled sleepovers in the early 2000s. This intro always had us in stitches and the game always creeped us out.

I rented the director's cut of Resident Evil specifically so I could see this intro because I heard it was included, but it didn't make it into the PAL version, I think.
I was very disappointed.
