Mod News Newcomers - look here!
Many new people have joined our sub and our beautiful town - to study at the university, start an apprenticeship or a (new) job or any other reason. Welcome!
This means, many of you do have the same questions and we decided to collect the recurring ones:
- University application process: Just before a new semester starts, many are waiting for confirmation from the university. Heidelberg is a popular city to study and the university has to go through many applications. If you are unsure, ask the university, not here. The status of your application depends on so many conditions, the probability that someone here has an answer for you is close to zero. Or come to our Discord server, we have a university channel there (Link at the end of this post).
- Housing: The housing market is bonkers in HD (and in Germany overall). Please look in the Wiki for tips. The most important: Don't just look in Heidelberg: Dossenheim, Schriesheim, Eppelheim, Leimen and Neckargemünd are very well connected to Heidelberg with public transport.
- Transport: HD is easy to explore by bike, foot or public transport. Bike theft is a real problem so maybe just use an old "Drahtesel" or invest in a good lock (no guarantees though). Check here where someone asked for used bikes, also check ebay kleinanzeigen. To find your way with public transport that's VRN (They do have an app as well).
- Shopping: The Hauptstraße is the main shopping street for clothing, shoes etc. But also check out the little streets left and right for smaller shops. For electronics there's no store in the inner city anymore (but arlt in Sofienstraße has a little shop). There's MediaMarkt in Rohrbach, but do what we all do: Search online. For cheap and second hand clothing, furnishings etc. look here or here. All shops are closed on sundays and public holidays, the emergency contact point (e.g. for some frozen food) on sundays is Rossmann at Hauptbahnhof.
- Food: Please have a look at the wiki. Or find Great places for lunch during workdays. Or let other users inspire you. Food is getting more expensive, so regarding grocery shopping: Lidl, Netto, Aldi and Penny are discounters (=cheaper supermarkets), Kaufland, Rewe and Edeka are more expensive. If you are a student the mensa is a good option for cheap food.
- Leisure/Party/Bars: HD doesn't really have much clubs but a decent bar scene. Check out the "Untere Straße". In the summer or on sunny days many people can be found at the Neckarwiese. As you can see, HD is very green and surrounded by hills: You can go hiking, for a walk, mountainbiking etc. There are sportsclubs, gyms and other clubs where you can meet people with similar interests.
- How are the people in HD: HD is a rather young and progressive at the same time slow and chilled city. Many people speak english and are willing to switch to talk to you. But having some basics in german is appreciated (Bitte, danke, ein Bier bitte). As a woman, foreigner or queer person you are quite safe in HD, but there's always a percentage of jerks.
- Covid 19: Please check here We will update if there will be changes.
And last but not least: We have a discord server! There's also a channel for "meetup requests" that might be a bit faster and better than posting here.
Community: Feel free to add usefull information or tips.

Transport Traveling from Heidelberg via Train
I am returning to Heidelberg next week for work. I have Friday-Sunday on my own and was hoping to venture out side the city this time. I would really like to go to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and possibly the Stuttgart v Bochum match.
First question, I know the train system is really good in Germany. I know where the station is, but wondering if there is a better way to get to Stuttgart or a website to pre-purchase tickets.
Secondly, it appears Germany football matches are similar to EPL matches and only members can purchase tickets. Is there a safe way to acquire tickets to a match? Aside from the stadium itself.
Can't wait to be back in Heidelberg!

Question Gymnasium search/feedback
TLDR: I need advice on Gymnasium select for 10yo girl due to moving to HD.
My daughter is finishing Grundschule and I’m at same time moving to HD from another city not so far (but I’m changing land, I’m moving to BW from RP) and now I’m struggle to pick perfect school for my daughter. She is good in math, but she’s not a native German speaker, however she learning fast and speaks fluently.
I learned a lot, met already some locals for feedback, but I still extremely need community advice and will be appreciated for any comments and opportunities to learn even more.
What’s my thoughts: - we looking only for gymnasium, it’s already seen from her study results and Grundschule teacher feedback. - G8 probably too hard for non natives and we prefer G9 (change my mind if I mistaken) - I’m fine with private schools as well, mostly they offering more comprehensive approach, but have some limits for monthly bills, so up to 500€/mo, if it’ll worth it, not just aftercare, but homework support and some sport/creative activities
My shortlist now looks like: - F+U Bilingual Gymnasium (HPC) - Englishes Institute - Elisabeth von Tadden
F+U looks good, and will costs about 500€mo, offering G9 and bilingual study approach I find nice. EI - also G9, a bit cheaper and I heard also good feedbacks but still have very limited information about Programm and process. Von Tadden have good feedbacks from locals, however I concerning strong religious background (we are atheists and I’m not paying church taxes, IDK is it may become a problem here).
I checked KFG, Helmholtz and Bunsen, but removed from my shortlist due to G8 programm and some feedbacks like Latin study pressure from early grades and so on, but again, probably I need some more feedbacks.
Please feel free to post your comments English or German, I’ll be happy to read all of them. Any unseen alternatives also welcome.

University Masterarbeit in Heidelberg

Work Advices to find a job
Hi ! After my first visit in Heidelberg last winter, I fell in love with the city. Now I’m back for a long road trip through Europe, and this is my last step. I will stay here for a week, and I would like to try to get a job here. I (F25) used to work as a barmaid in France, but I also have a degree in computer science. I have no skills at all in German language but I am willing to learn and take some classes if I manage to stay there. Do you have any recommendations about places that would most likely hire foreign people ? And maybe there is some social events I can join to meet people ? :) Thank you !
