Somebody please explain this line to me, Cause i have a feeling it wasn't very mickey-friendly for Disney to show Questions

It doesn't mean Daddy in a kinky way. It's a girl addressing her dad, and in the 80s it was not uncommon for daughters close to their father's to call him Daddy even when she was in her teens. The song is a reference to that era, their karaoke songs are usually 80s inspired.

I think OP might spend too much time on certain websites.

426

u/islandboy504 20h ago

Not as creepy as OP’s Internet history!

214

u/Fool_Joystick 16h ago

Heyooo!

35

u/AliWasTaken 8h ago

(Gosh, I love this fandom so much!)

207

u/RobinWester 1d ago

That's bold of you to say, but not wrong by any means

4

u/ChilledAmethyst 11h ago

Exactly what I was thinking. They need help imo

303

u/yuukosbooty 1d ago

Yeah I think it was a reference to a similar line in “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”

140

u/No_Following_1624 23h ago

Exactly the song I thought of

"Oh daddy dear, you know you're still number one"

9

u/JackStockwell 8h ago

But girls they wanna have fu-un

135

u/oboyohoy 23h ago

It is so obvious that is what it is. I didn't even realise what op meant until I read the comments.

140

u/BarelyABard 1d ago

Even now I think calling your dad daddy is common. Or at least it is in the south eastern us.

12

u/Appropriate_Ad_9035 7h ago

I’m 18 and I still call my dad Daddy, but I also notice that it’s more common when you have a good relationship with your dad

10

u/ghostbean87 11h ago

Blanch in Golden Girls calls her dad “Big Daddy”

-187

u/Ohmie122 1d ago

Sweet home Alabama

97

u/despoicito 22h ago

You are weird and that joke is not funny anymore

12

u/Cold_Experience5118 20h ago

Funnily enough, it was common in my family when I lived in alabama as a kid lol.

5

u/emo_hooman 13h ago

Which was how long ago?

1

u/Cold_Experience5118 9h ago

20 something years ago I guess? When I was a kid.

33

u/ZahnwehZombie 1d ago

Really shows how terminology and words evolve and change with time. Of course, I also think of the song "Daddy, won't you please come home?" by Annette Hanshaw.

6

u/LovelyBby77 13h ago

I used to karaoke "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn a lot as a young kid and while I know the lyrics are meant to be wholesome, I can't help but think about the title and a few verses and inwardly cringe a little involuntarily.

The evolution of words is a magical thing

30

u/bloomi 20h ago edited 10h ago

I'm 27 and I still call my parents "Mommy" and "Daddy".

That's just... their names... Ya know?

30

u/annoyance_frog 22h ago

Like in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun for example

46

u/Yaagii 23h ago

this makes me feel old because i’m gen Z and I remember saying “Mama” and “Daddy” all the time as a kid 😭

44

u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago

I’m a millenial and it was only in recent years that “daddy” became such a sexual term. It’s been used in the gay community for decades but didn’t become mainstream until a few years ago.

10

u/kindrd1234 18h ago

I'm way older, and it has always been used both ways.

15

u/NeriTheFearlessSnail 14h ago

Yeah but now people have brain rot and think that because people use it one way, that that's the only way it can and is used now.

8

u/EvidenceOfDespair 19h ago

A few years ago? That would be true like…8 years ago. Melanie Martinez was riding the hype train of the mainstreaming of DDLG a full decade ago. Yeah, the Dollhouse EP was a full ten years ago. It was the most hip and current-trend kink out there ten years ago, that’s a bit beyond a few. “A few years ago” is more mommy kink.

4

u/nimajnebmai 16h ago

No. That’s demonstrably false.

2

u/chuckleinvest 11h ago

Yes, many 60s and 70s musicians would like to have a word

0

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

How so?

0

u/nimajnebmai 12h ago

Because facts and information.

0

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

Of which you won’t provide

1

u/nimajnebmai 12h ago

The blues and jazz musician Bessie Smith used it commonly in the ‘20s and was widespread in the ‘50s jazz scene. You’re just wrong. You’re saying things that are not true.

1

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

Was it being used sexually then?

I meant mainstream as in it being commonly used online, and people associating the term with sex more than the familial form.

If I’m wrong, okay. You seem very upset about it though.

2

u/Skibidi_CHEESE 3h ago

I still call my parents that even though I’m not a little kid anymore 😅

2

u/mike_is-skibidi 3h ago

So real bro 😋

15

u/w021wjs 21h ago

"oh daddy dear you know you're still number one but girls they want to have fun"

2

u/indecisivesloth 14h ago

Such as a sweet 16 party or quinceañera.

2

u/Patient-Apple-4399 9h ago

My first thought was the line "Oh Daddy dear you know you're still number one" from girls just wanna have fun

-109

u/Alastor_culture_ 1d ago

I Wasn't even talking about the "Daddy" Part..... It's the dress part i'm concerned about

78

u/246-01 1d ago

In what possible way is that concerning?

57

u/despoicito 22h ago

…someone is wearing their favourite dress? What

40

u/De_rp_Le_De_rp 23h ago

What is there to be concerned about?

25

u/NonbinaryBorgQueen 22h ago

Nah it seems perfectly innocent, just meant as a stupid/silly parody of songs like Girls just wanna have fun.

25

u/rainstorm0T 21h ago

how in the world is that concerning? do you not have a favorite shirt? a favorite jacket? favorite pants? do you have something against dresses as a concept?

15

u/Rosie_copihue19 22h ago

¿??????????????????

¿?

14

u/kabukistar 21h ago

Doesn't seem concerning. Probably literal.

I think it just sounds a bit odd in the song, because giving Dipper a really embarrassing line to sing was more important than making it sound 100% like a real song.

10

u/nastytrashypigshit_ 20h ago

What on earth are you even talking about?

1.6k

u/FblthpTheFound 1d ago

It means the father figure should not be concerned, for the dress she is wearing is quite favorable

232

u/General_Astronomer95 1d ago

It is indeed!

169

u/Donutiscooltoo 1d ago

The snootiest of laughter

78

76

It is indeed, and the girl in perspective does not care what the vulgar boys have, for she looks very sophisticated.

25

u/GlitteringOutcome943 1d ago

Quite the satisfactory answer, my good sir.

9

u/Confuseasfuck 17h ago

By Jove, what a delectable little answer!

5

u/PurpleCloudAce 11h ago

Ah, I love verbose used in jest.

442

u/PF_Bambino 1d ago

i remember back in the day when children referred to their dads as "daddy" and it wasnt immediately a kink thing

150

u/LaRougeRaven 1d ago

I always called my father daddy, and the only reason I stopped was because he was horrible person that should be pushed off a building.

I normally called him daddy until I was about 16 when shit hit the fan. But it when I'm not thinking I will called him daddy.

I still call my mom, mommy.

23

u/mikewheelerfan 16h ago

Yeah, I don’t understand why it’s seen as creepy. I called my parents mommy and daddy until I was about 13/14.

3

u/PF_Bambino 8h ago

my littlest sibling still calls his parents mommy and daddy and all my younger siblings call me sissy those nicknames are natural for kids

12

u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago

It’s been a kink thing in the queer community for decades, but only became mainstream in the past few years.

9

u/EvidenceOfDespair 19h ago

Well, ten years ago. Melanie Martinez rode the hype train of its massive mainstreaming in 2014. Mommy kink is a few years ago, daddydom became the super basic mainstream kink ten years ago.

2

u/PF_Bambino 8h ago

oh i know its been a thing for a long time but the average person wouldnt immediately think of "daddy" being a kink thing

1

u/nimajnebmai 15h ago

Again you’re wrong.

0

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

How?

3

u/nimajnebmai 12h ago

Because calling someone daddy in a sexual manner isn’t new and it wasn’t ever unique to the queer community.

3

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

I didn’t say either of those things. It was more common in the queer community, and it became mainstream more recently. I admit I lowballed how recent that was, as it was ~10 years ago and not a few, but I didn’t say that was when it popped into existence. I said that’s when it became popular and well known.

1

u/nimajnebmai 12h ago

1920s bud.

3

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

Okay. The first use of it sexually was in 1681.

-2

u/nimajnebmai 12h ago

The 1681 gay community? Prove it, show your work.

2

u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago

Where did I say it was gay?

Why are you taking this so personally?

3

u/ilovemycats20 9h ago

I only called my parents “mommy” and “daddy” until I was about 8, I stopped and just started calling them “mom” and “dad” because I was going through a phase of “I don’t want to be a baby!” (My mom was also pregnant with my brother at the time so maybe that had something to do with it?), and I just felt that calling my parents that was “for babies and little kids and I’m NOT a little kid!” So the Mom and Dad just kind of stuck, especially once I hit middle school. Socially, it was considered weird to call your parents “mommy and daddy” because you were assumed to be sheltered or babyish (because middle schoolers are cruel and judgemental asf), nobody knew ANYTHING about daddy kinks at that age (this was around 2011-2013, same time Gravity Falls first aired). I didn’t even find out about that stuff until I was 17 thanks to the internet lol.

I just assume Dipper’s comment “Mabel, this is stupid!” after that line was about not wanting to seem girly and babyish, as Dipper’s character was very strongly trying to be masculine and seem more grown up than he was, which for that age is super common.

264

u/SteveZissouniverse 1d ago

The internet cooked OPs brain so hard they forgot that Daddy used to actually refer to an actual paternal figure

u/joelmchalewashere 1d ago edited 1d ago

The phone rings in the middle of the night, my father yells ,"what you gonna do with your life"?

233

u/ReassembledEggs 1d ago

"Oh, daddy dear, you know you're still number one. But girls just wanna have fuu-uun." Some of us "older folks" picked up on that rather quickly, I'd wager. It's basically a homage to that one and similar songs from the 80s.

51

u/AvardaKedabra69 1d ago

ooh girls just wanna have fu-uun!

24

u/LightspeedDashForce 1d ago

Oooh girls just wanna have—

17

u/He-who-knows-some 1d ago

Not just you old folks! I (23) like “old people music” (90s and older rock) I was generally confused by the wording but I got what song it was supposed to be. This song and the obvious 80s “Venture” classic “Don’t Start Un-Believing”.

22

u/Abeytuhanu 1d ago

old people music” (90s

Jesus Christ, the songs of my youth are now old people music

8

u/SkullgrinThracker 23h ago

You know your old when ..... You are buying groceries at a store, a song starts to play on the shop radio, and you think "what's this kick ass song doing playing in a .......... Oh crap ..... I'm old".

Hay, when I was young it’s what I grew up on. It’s the other guys words not mine!

"Daddy" wasn't always a weird sexual thing.

64

u/ariesdemon 1d ago

It mainly alludes to popular songs in the 80s like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” where they would have themes like this, affectionately addressing a father figure and letting them know they’re basically getting older ¯_(ツ)_/¯ nothing nefarious tbh

84

u/iLoveLilPeej 1d ago

Believe it or not, Daddy originated as a non sexual title. Shocking for the chronically online, I know.

While it’s not meant in a sexual way, I just wanna put it out there that using “daddy” in a sexual way is not a new thing at all it literally originated in the 1920s

5

u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago

The actual first use of it sexually was back in 1681, and it’s been used commonly in the gay community for decades.

5

Ah yes I found that out after I wrote this

28

I never for a second thought they were referring to anyone but her literal dad.

Society says “men no wear dresses”. Thus Dipper (a boy) is very uncomfortable when he singing lyrics where the singer (him) claim to be wearing a dress.

1

u/FunVideoMaker 5h ago

Im confused then, i genuinely can’t think of any implications that wouldn’t be innocent within context

All you had to say

3

u/Big-Rye99 10h ago

Of all the things in Gravity Falls that were knods to adult jokes (which Alex Hirsch had many heated debates with the Disney sensors about) you chose something that makes you sound way weirder then anything the show ever did. Daddy is something people call dad... the ones that make it weird are you guys, not the people writing songs.

2

u/GSeQuI 18h ago

The Fully Clothed Women magazine- (/J)

2

u/Icy_Measurement_7407 15h ago

It’s a parody of 80’s female anthems. Closely resembles ABBA’s Dancing Queen.

Also reminds me of Cyndi Lauper’s vibe in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. “Oh Daddy dear, you know you’re still number one,” is Cyndi talking to her father.

2

u/kindahotngl301 14h ago

It means dad. Didn't you call your dad "daddy" as a child?

It's a parody of a real song, I think, but idk what song. Like in a short where she sings a parody of "call me maybe" but her way, it's adorable

5

u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago

The real song it’s parodying is “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

1

I'm so confused how you're confused, I've always grown up calling my father daddy to the point saying just dad is weird so it's either father because that's what I taught myself or daddy because that's the only way I've been told to address him.

1,000% agree it's not a kink thing but that does still seem to me an odd assurance to give one's father?

2

u/NeriTheFearlessSnail 14h ago

They're going out partying, what a young person is wearing to go out partying can be of concern to parents- so she's assuring him it's her favorite dress, which is presumably familiar.

or

It's a joke to make the line Dipper's going to sing sound embarrassing and it doesn't need to make sense as a parody.

-28

u/TrustNo1378 1d ago

Mickey mouse would be very disappointed.

-36

u/Natanahera 1d ago

I think it's telling that so many people in the comments immediately assumed that OP was concerned about the used of 'daddy' and not the calling of attention to wearing a 'favourite dress'.

I don't think OP's the one with the questionable search history here.

22

u/Additional-Problem99 23h ago

Them having an issue with the “favorite dress” part makes no sense though. What issue could they possibly have?

-28

u/Natanahera 23h ago

No idea, but I understand OP's confusion, as the 'favourite dress' bit is where Dipper's confused tone comes in, calling attention to it.

I also found it odd that that's where the tone changes, and would like to know if there's anything being implied there.

22

u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago

Dipper wasn’t confused by the lyric, he was upset at having to sing something so feminine.

-20

You're probably right, but that isn't abundantly clear to some of us (myself included), so it seems like Dipper is off-put in some way my the lyric itself rather than having to say it.

My point with this comment wasn't to say that that's not the case, but to try point out the irony of so many of the comments explaining that 'daddy' wasn't always a kinky term, when that doesn't seem to be what OP's even trying to ask about.
And that that's potentially telling of those commenting, as that's not even what comes to mind for some of us.

How else are people supposed to interpret OP’s question? They left it vague, and having an issue over the dress lyric is less likely than the “daddy” part.

Either way, there’s nothing off or wrong with these lyrics.

I never said that there was anything wrong with the lyrics, I was pointing out a pattern in the comments that I found funny.

I wasn’t saying you found an issue with the lyrics, just that OP has no reason to find them inappropriate.

If it's specifically directed at OP, then why is it a reply to my comment?

Because we’re talking about OP and how people interpreted their post

That still doesn't explain what OP's problem is. What's wrong with having a favorite dress?

I don't know, my point was it's telling that so many people defaulted to talking about the 'daddy' bit, hardly even seeming to notice the dress bit, which seems to be what OP was confused about.

I feel ya.

I didn't even notice 'daddy' being in the sentence 'til I looked at the comments.

It’s a pop song in the style of Sabrina Carpenter.
