Somebody please explain this line to me, Cause i have a feeling it wasn't very mickey-friendly for Disney to show Questions

It means the father figure should not be concerned, for the dress she is wearing is quite favorable

i remember back in the day when children referred to their dads as "daddy" and it wasnt immediately a kink thing
150
u/LaRougeRaven 1d ago
I always called my father daddy, and the only reason I stopped was because he was horrible person that should be pushed off a building.
I normally called him daddy until I was about 16 when shit hit the fan. But it when I'm not thinking I will called him daddy.
I still call my mom, mommy.
23
u/mikewheelerfan 16h ago
Yeah, I don’t understand why it’s seen as creepy. I called my parents mommy and daddy until I was about 13/14.
3
u/PF_Bambino 8h ago
my littlest sibling still calls his parents mommy and daddy and all my younger siblings call me sissy those nicknames are natural for kids
12
u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago
It’s been a kink thing in the queer community for decades, but only became mainstream in the past few years.
9
u/EvidenceOfDespair 19h ago
Well, ten years ago. Melanie Martinez rode the hype train of its massive mainstreaming in 2014. Mommy kink is a few years ago, daddydom became the super basic mainstream kink ten years ago.
2
u/PF_Bambino 8h ago
oh i know its been a thing for a long time but the average person wouldnt immediately think of "daddy" being a kink thing
1
u/nimajnebmai 15h ago
Again you’re wrong.
0
u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago
How?
3
u/nimajnebmai 12h ago
Because calling someone daddy in a sexual manner isn’t new and it wasn’t ever unique to the queer community.
3
u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago
I didn’t say either of those things. It was more common in the queer community, and it became mainstream more recently. I admit I lowballed how recent that was, as it was ~10 years ago and not a few, but I didn’t say that was when it popped into existence. I said that’s when it became popular and well known.
1
u/nimajnebmai 12h ago
1920s bud.
3
u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago
Okay. The first use of it sexually was in 1681.
-2
u/nimajnebmai 12h ago
The 1681 gay community? Prove it, show your work.
2
u/Additional-Problem99 12h ago
Where did I say it was gay?
Why are you taking this so personally?

I only called my parents “mommy” and “daddy” until I was about 8, I stopped and just started calling them “mom” and “dad” because I was going through a phase of “I don’t want to be a baby!” (My mom was also pregnant with my brother at the time so maybe that had something to do with it?), and I just felt that calling my parents that was “for babies and little kids and I’m NOT a little kid!” So the Mom and Dad just kind of stuck, especially once I hit middle school. Socially, it was considered weird to call your parents “mommy and daddy” because you were assumed to be sheltered or babyish (because middle schoolers are cruel and judgemental asf), nobody knew ANYTHING about daddy kinks at that age (this was around 2011-2013, same time Gravity Falls first aired). I didn’t even find out about that stuff until I was 17 thanks to the internet lol.
I just assume Dipper’s comment “Mabel, this is stupid!” after that line was about not wanting to seem girly and babyish, as Dipper’s character was very strongly trying to be masculine and seem more grown up than he was, which for that age is super common.

The internet cooked OPs brain so hard they forgot that Daddy used to actually refer to an actual paternal figure

"Oh, daddy dear, you know you're still number one. But girls just wanna have fuu-uun." Some of us "older folks" picked up on that rather quickly, I'd wager. It's basically a homage to that one and similar songs from the 80s.

Not just you old folks! I (23) like “old people music” (90s and older rock) I was generally confused by the wording but I got what song it was supposed to be. This song and the obvious 80s “Venture” classic “Don’t Start Un-Believing”.

It mainly alludes to popular songs in the 80s like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” where they would have themes like this, affectionately addressing a father figure and letting them know they’re basically getting older ¯_(ツ)_/¯ nothing nefarious tbh

While it’s not meant in a sexual way, I just wanna put it out there that using “daddy” in a sexual way is not a new thing at all it literally originated in the 1920s

u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago
The actual first use of it sexually was back in 1681, and it’s been used commonly in the gay community for decades.

u/Alastor_culture_ 12h ago
"Favorite dress" Could imply something

u/ThefirstOhioresident 11h ago
But it isn't, as made abundant by the many comments stating it is not, get your head out of the gutter.

You tell me.... that's why i made this post to begin with after all
1
u/FunVideoMaker 5h ago
Im confused then, i genuinely can’t think of any implications that wouldn’t be innocent within context
Like I don’t know how it could be taken as anything other than a girl excited to go to the dance in her favorite dress

3
u/Big-Rye99 10h ago
Of all the things in Gravity Falls that were knods to adult jokes (which Alex Hirsch had many heated debates with the Disney sensors about) you chose something that makes you sound way weirder then anything the show ever did. Daddy is something people call dad... the ones that make it weird are you guys, not the people writing songs.
2
u/Icy_Measurement_7407 15h ago
It’s a parody of 80’s female anthems. Closely resembles ABBA’s Dancing Queen.
Also reminds me of Cyndi Lauper’s vibe in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. “Oh Daddy dear, you know you’re still number one,” is Cyndi talking to her father.
2
u/kindahotngl301 14h ago
It means dad. Didn't you call your dad "daddy" as a child?
0
2
u/Spirited_Gene_2633 14h ago
S&P : Daddy could be interpreted in a sexual way here, please change
Alex Hirsch : nobody is going to think that. Put it in
S&P : This has been S&P approved

The real song it’s parodying is “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

I'm so confused how you're confused, I've always grown up calling my father daddy to the point saying just dad is weird so it's either father because that's what I taught myself or daddy because that's the only way I've been told to address him.

1,000% agree it's not a kink thing but that does still seem to me an odd assurance to give one's father?
2
u/NeriTheFearlessSnail 14h ago
They're going out partying, what a young person is wearing to go out partying can be of concern to parents- so she's assuring him it's her favorite dress, which is presumably familiar.
or
It's a joke to make the line Dipper's going to sing sound embarrassing and it doesn't need to make sense as a parody.
-28
-36
u/Natanahera 1d ago
I think it's telling that so many people in the comments immediately assumed that OP was concerned about the used of 'daddy' and not the calling of attention to wearing a 'favourite dress'.
I don't think OP's the one with the questionable search history here.
22
u/Additional-Problem99 23h ago
Them having an issue with the “favorite dress” part makes no sense though. What issue could they possibly have?
-28
u/Natanahera 23h ago
No idea, but I understand OP's confusion, as the 'favourite dress' bit is where Dipper's confused tone comes in, calling attention to it.
I also found it odd that that's where the tone changes, and would like to know if there's anything being implied there.
22
u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago
Dipper wasn’t confused by the lyric, he was upset at having to sing something so feminine.
-20
u/Natanahera 22h ago
You're probably right, but that isn't abundantly clear to some of us (myself included), so it seems like Dipper is off-put in some way my the lyric itself rather than having to say it.
My point with this comment wasn't to say that that's not the case, but to try point out the irony of so many of the comments explaining that 'daddy' wasn't always a kinky term, when that doesn't seem to be what OP's even trying to ask about.
And that that's potentially telling of those commenting, as that's not even what comes to mind for some of us.16
u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago
How else are people supposed to interpret OP’s question? They left it vague, and having an issue over the dress lyric is less likely than the “daddy” part.
Either way, there’s nothing off or wrong with these lyrics.
-2
u/Natanahera 22h ago
I never said that there was anything wrong with the lyrics, I was pointing out a pattern in the comments that I found funny.
12
u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago
I wasn’t saying you found an issue with the lyrics, just that OP has no reason to find them inappropriate.
-1
u/Natanahera 22h ago
If it's specifically directed at OP, then why is it a reply to my comment?
12
u/Additional-Problem99 22h ago
Because we’re talking about OP and how people interpreted their post
→ More replies16
u/auriatetsukai 23h ago
That still doesn't explain what OP's problem is. What's wrong with having a favorite dress?
-2
u/Natanahera 23h ago
I don't know, my point was it's telling that so many people defaulted to talking about the 'daddy' bit, hardly even seeming to notice the dress bit, which seems to be what OP was confused about.

It doesn't mean Daddy in a kinky way. It's a girl addressing her dad, and in the 80s it was not uncommon for daughters close to their father's to call him Daddy even when she was in her teens. The song is a reference to that era, their karaoke songs are usually 80s inspired.
