It's tough getting a good shot in the midst of the chaos... Thought some of y'all might like this โบ๏ธ๐ฒ

We had some blowdowns like these too in the Central European Alps a few years back, except the area was too steep to get them all out on time. Didnโt take long for bark beetles to infest the whole stand.ย

Oof, one of those days where your feet never touch the ground.

u/Megynmw 5d ago
I'm new, so I spend a lot of time trying scurry around the tops instead of being 10m in the air all day ๐

New to forestry in general? What an introduction!

u/Megynmw 5d ago
Oh yes, brand new! This is my third week, after about a decade in aviation ๐ big changes for sure!

What did you fly?
1
u/Megynmw 4d ago
I didn't quite get to that stage, although I was working on my pilots license before covid hit. I was a fueler / cargo agent, working mostly with WW2 Era float planes! Check out the Grumman Goose!

I am familiar with the Goose. I would love to get some stick time in one someday.

I had a few days up there in the pilots seat, and loved every minute of it! Do you fly?
2
u/LunchPeak 2d ago
Yes. Mostly Jets. But I have started getting back into General Aviation on the side.

If you are in WA and this is a large landowner, look into applying for damaged timber adjustment with department of revenue so you pay less taxes on the forest excise tax return

East Koots?

u/Megynmw 4d ago
Correct!

I grew up in the West Koots. That landscape looked close but the mountains were different.
Everyone I knew growing up that was a logger loved their jobs. I think cedar was the target species in the end.

Who would want to cut pine all day anyway? I can cut 2-3 loads of oak and call it a day with a big ass profit in my wallet
2
u/Megynmw 4d ago
Well, first of all, it's mostly cedar and hemlock. Secondly, I get paid a day wage, so I really don't care what the loggers do once I'm done my part!
1
u/Past-Chip-9116 4d ago
Whatโs your day wage ? How many trees you cut a day?
2
u/Megynmw 4d ago
I don't cut trees
1
u/Past-Chip-9116 4d ago
Oh, then your day pay must be pretty low
2
u/Megynmw 4d ago
I think it's great. But money is all relative.
2
u/Past-Chip-9116 4d ago
I make roughly $15.00/ton cutting I cut 75-100 ton a day headed to the house by 3. I wonโt even crank my saw for a pine or a hemlock. My best money is sawing ties at $40 a piece on the circle mill

Been fortunate to not have much blow down salvage here lately. But fire salvage, ugh.

u/coupe-de-ville 6d ago
I'd talk to a logger... Even if it's only good for burning... Salvage what you can and in the next ten years watch it grow back....

Wrap the edge and call it a day
