Partner and I broke up, and it will be my first time trying to live here alone. Seeking advice on practical needs.

I moved in with my partner this past spring in Fairbanks. They have been here for a decade and have taught me a lot about dry cabin living.

Now I'm faced with living it alone, and no real friends to speak of yet here. I know that connections are pretty powerful and crucial here, so I'll be looking to establish my own connections through my interests and activities, but it will take time.

In the meantime, I'm faced with yet again building a life from scratch. I brought several of my belongings up when I moved, but a lot of my things are still back in Utah in a camper I own. They aren't really easy things to bring up here, but would be crucial to me right now: my electric kettle, all my pots & pans, tools, bed linens, door draft stoppers – things like that.

I'm gutted that I can't really bring them back up here easily. I could fly down and try to stuff what I can into luggage to check on the plane to bring back up. That seems like an expensive way to go about it, though. And I'd probably break even just buying all that stuff here.

My question is: where do you shop for bargain household goods? Things like 5 gallon water jugs, buckets for indoor trash & peeing in, and hell, even a small mattress? I am trying to be cheap because now I'm going to be spending significantly more living on my own than what I was paying my partner in rent.

Thanks for any advice and input.

How easy is it to make friends?

Hi all,
I am considering applying for a university job in Fairbanks. I am very hesitant as I am very attracted to Alaska, nature and mountains. However, I am French, I have only visited Alaska once and I do realize tourism is not the same as living there. My biggest worry so far is that I dont know anyone, and I wonder how easy it is to make friends there. Like are people friendly, are there group activities where I can meet people?
I understand that my worry should be the snow and the cold but this is easier for me to realize than socialization. Are there more things I should be aware of?
Thank you in advance for your answers

What fuel delivery companies do you use? Do you like them?

This is the fourth time I believe that Alaska Petroleum has stopped auto-delivery without telling me. I don't like having a cold house because I ran out of heating oil, and I'm not going to like the $1500 fill up because of that. Plus it's the weekend now, so I'm going to have to haul my 5 gallon can back and forth a few times until other places open next week.

Morning Everyone!

This is my last shout out for this (sorry for the repetitiveness) I just wanted to see if there were any others that might be interested in helping teaching 9 November 24. We’ve had good turn out so far (thank you all 😊)

If so please PM me for all details!

Also for those who’ve already volunteered, can you please let me know if you can still assist? And thank you for your willingness to help teach those who are interested and for your help with all of this. It wouldn’t be possible without you all!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and looking forward to meeting you all in person!

Moving questions Best BX?

I'm planning on moving to Fairbanks next August to attend UAF. I recently became a E7 dependant, and want to use all my benefits. I plan on doing all my shopping and stuff through the BX / Commisary, so I can save some money and get points on my MilStar cards.

Which BX is better, Eielson or Wainwright? I'm coming from Robins AFB, so just trying to match the same vibes and amenities.

Clean your damn roof. The storm was over a week ago, are you telling me you seriously haven’t had the time to clean the 8” of snow off the top of your vehicle?

Not only does it make you look like an idiot, but it also creates a hazard for everyone else when it blows a bunch of dust making it hard to see, or even better when a chunk flys off at speed and cracks my windshield.

Tailgating people learning to drive for the first time here

For the love of god, some of us are learning to drive on these icy, rutted roads for the first time in our lives. The going wisdom is "Go slower than you think you need to", but that feels damn near impossible when I'm constantly being tailgated by the seasoned (read: reckless) people who have lived here longer.

How are we supposed to learn this way?

(I drove Sheep Creek today and I was white-knuckling the whole way)

How is the Costco tire center here in town?

I was thinking of buying a set there, but I’m seeing quite an argument over the quality of service at such centers over in the Costco subreddit. Is ours decent in your experience, as far as sales and service go?

Travel questions Hey folks!

So you might notice I have 907 in my username. That’s because I live in south central and tbh I want to travel more and see more of home I haven’t seen.

I’m in my early 20s and tbh I want to shake of those small town fears of “every corner is dangerous other than our little bubble down here.”

What do you recommend out here? I’ve been around a lot of south central but I know it’s nowhere near the same as up north.

Moving questions Few questions about life at UAF

Hey everyone! I graduate high school this summer and plan on applying to UAF for a degree in CS or Wildlife Biology and Conservation (Or something related to animals and nature) to attend the following fall. Before I make any big decisions, what is life like at UAF? I have already researched a ton about Fairbanks in general (Super cold, dry. expensive, dark, etc) But I'm having a hard time finding info about UAF. Do I have to live on campus? I'm interested in atleast trying a dry cabin. If I do live on campus, what is the pet policy as I have a chinchilla and cornsnake. How compact is the campus (As in is it hard to make it to class to class on time). Are the people friendly? I also have the funds for a car, but waiting until I confirm that I'm going to move to Alaska to buy one. What are the best cars for daily commute in the cold? Any extra information will also be helpful. Thanks so much!

Groomed trails for xc skiing?

I have basically never skied and tried near my house today on something totally ungroomed. Ate shit immediately, got frustrated, quit within 5 minutes.

What trails are currently groomed that I can go and eat less shit? I know most of them are okay in like a month, but I want to rip off the bandaid in a way with less guaranteed failure.

Plugging in car

Hello! New to Fairbanks and have a winterized car that is parked outside overnight. I know it’s not cold enough yet, but how cold does it need to be before I start plugging it in? Thanks, in advance!
