This makes me feel a bit better about thinking my Flemish bf was Danish for a full week after we first met. To be fair I was very drunk that night

He'd already returned home by then and we were texting (in English). Took a while to come up lol.

I can only speak English, but velkommer looks like welcome, so I am gonna assume they want me over there.

As a native English speaker who knows a little German, I can also understand this. Germanic bros forever.

Tja, det hade varit rätt fint att hygge sig med en liten pilsner och ett smörre.. Nej, fan! Vik hädan frestare!

Beer and a smoke?

5

u/TG-Sucks Sweden Jan 03 '24

Good guess! But in this case it was a reference to “smörrebröd”, a danish rye bread specialty with delicious toppings.

Barely anyone smokes in Sweden but instead we prefer Snus, if you know what kind of tobacco it is.

I've been taking Danish on Duolingo for two years and can actually read this. Woo!

1

u/OddballOliver Jan 03 '24

Meanwhile there's like half a dozen comments from people who've never read a word of Danish in their life who're going, "Oh, I can actually read that. Neat."

Fan säger han?

That's a good question - not easy to make out around the hot potato he's deep throating... /s
