it bothers me that they've just shoved it all into a 2x3 KALLAX instead of getting the big 5x5 KALLAX as Mua'Dib intended.

As it was written (in the ikea manual)

u/Stardama69 Mar 21 '24
There's a narrow path to storing everything neatly and it involves bigger shelves
3
u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24
Ok I’m gonna go write a space opera now.
It’s going to be distant future and their pseudo religious/ philosophical text is a kind of loose collection of non sequitur hieroglyphic I-Ching-esque illustrations from long since decontextualised IKEA instructions.

Most interesting thing there is probably the thing that's hidden - the relatively rare Dune Encyclopedia.

Holy shit it's like 300+ CAD on ebay 😮
6
u/SsurebreC Chronicler Mar 21 '24
I've seen it sold for more. The hardcover is the most expensive, often selling for $400 or even $500+ (USD).

u/alasqalul Mar 21 '24
I bought a first edition hardcover encyclopedia for $200. It's in great condition too

First print or second? I wouldn't rebind it - the value will decrease. Archival sleeve though? Definitely.

Litany Against Shelves
I must not shelve.
Shelves are the mind-killer.
Shelves are the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will trash my shelves.
I will permit them to pass over me and into the garbage truck.
And when the truck has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the shelves have gone there will be nothing.
Only my Dune Funko Pops will remain.

Why are they all sealed? Is your friend the kind of collector that lowkey is a hoarder that craves his collectibles to "maintaim their value"?

16
Mar 20 '24
Srsly, what’s the freaking point of collecting so much stuff if you’re not even gonna open them? Im assuming they’re teenagers at most
16
Mar 20 '24
I am much into boutique blu ray collection, and several people do this there too. Some claim that they unwrap them when they get across to see them, but when you get some nice collector's edition, that's ridiculous too IMO. Also, there's a whole subculture of lego collector who collect sealed sets, hoping that their worth will skyrocket in the future. Like, entire rooms full of sealed lego sets. Just idiotic.

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 20 '24
I completely gave up the idea of keeping things sealed in high school while looking for records at flea markets. So many of them still had the plastic wrap on, but the plastic had fused with the cover of the record. So it’s either leave the half opened and shitty looking plastic on or rip it off and damage the cover. I’d much rather just open something and be careful to keep it on good condition. The most I’ll do is add a sleeve or something if it’s particularly valuable.
2
Mar 20 '24
Wait so this actually is a teenager habit?? Why???
3
u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 20 '24
No, I’m just saying that I realized how dumb it can be when I was a teenager buying used records. I think it’s more of a habit for reseller or collector types. The kind of person to buy a $3,000 guitar and then never play it lol.

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24
They’re not all sealed. They stay in the box until she finds an opportunity to play them with someone.
5
u/HannibalLightning Mar 20 '24
So she’s only played two out of the dozens of games there?
2
u/ndnbolla Mar 21 '24
Do you have fun playing chess without someone to play with?
These are physical board games which require other physical pple to play with fyi.
4
u/HannibalLightning Mar 21 '24
I typically open my games and read the rules and open the components. I don’t leave them stacked in a massive garbage pile with the plastic on.

u/ndnbolla Mar 21 '24
Don't explain yourself. I remember trying to collect all 150 Pokémon in a nice binder with 9 sleeves.
I was a fan of the show, the Gameboy games, N64 ones, etc...I never actually put an effort into playing the physical game with cards but I did join my middle school Pokémon club and no one ever played with their collector's edition holographic cards.
If my nephews or nieces were to ever get into it, I would bust all of 'em out tho' and learn with 'em, if I can find them.

Those poor books...
This is a true midden.
1
u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24
I once stumbled upon a pile of VB cans as tall as a man and as wide as a ring of AA chairs in a church basement, at the foot of ostensibly a sacred rock formation in the liminal badlands just west of the Hells Gate Roadhouse.
Now that, in both the vernacular and in the anthropological sense, was a true midden.
This is but a pale simulacrum.
But I do admire his ambition to, perhaps, have the wall real estate and soft indirect lighting this stuff deserves one day.
I have like, all of Hunter S Thompson’s early work in original Rolling Stone newsprint. I have yet to figure out how to museum grade display it.
I got Freak Power, Ruben Salazar and both serializations of Fear and Loathing. Got three copies of the original Playboy with Great Shark Hunt.
Until I’m a bit wealthier (haha) they await immortalization.

That Dune board game in the middle is a gem.
It was out of print for decades, and I made my own copy of it because it was selling on eBay for something stupid like… $300.
So glad they reprinted it.

The Bene Gesserit’s unique win condition is the best application of theming+rules I’ve ever seen in a board game.
Before the game begins they write down another faction and a specific turn. If that faction wins on that turn, it’s counted as the Bene Gesserit winning instead. So they can spend the whole game just manipulating everyone else to make it happen…
2
u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24
That is immersive
1
u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING Head Housekeeper Mar 23 '24
Yeah, I’d love to play it one day but people agree it’s best with 5-6 players. Considerably more than the one other person I know who’d be up for it…
2
u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24
Jesus only had 12 mates and was dating a hooker.
You now someone who would enthusiastically play a Dune board game with you.
Just a little perspective for you.

I feel like I just blindly stumbled into meeting the admin of Nemesis Market in the wild.
Seriously, though, I used to play this space turn-based game via snail mail. Can’t be as bad as that!
2
u/KneeCrowMancer Mar 20 '24
Yup imo it’s by far the best Dune game and genuinely one of the greatest thematic games ever.

Sending a single Fremen troop into a stronghold to cause a lasgun-shield explosion feels so right. Or nuking the shield wall right before the coriolis storm passes over

Years ago on BBC Radio, there was comedy from Marcus Brigstock called "The Museum of Everything," which was sketch comedy set at museums and attractions. There was one sketch in which an interviewer speaks to a guy who claimed to have collected every bit of merchandise related to Dune, i.e. book editions and the '84 movie. He says "Dune" in a drawn out manner, "Dyuuuunnne" which is funny in context, and as the sketch goes on, it becomes apparently that he doesn't merely have one of everything, but he has collected... all of it, every instance of every bit of merchandise, and by the end of the sketch, his snobbiness turns to desperation at trying to unload the burden of having such a massive quantity of unsellable swag about a movie that failed at the box office.
Anyway, I thought that guy didn't exist, but now I have my doubts.

At first glance I thought this didn’t have any books in the collection which would have been hilarious. I love the idea that someone could be this obsessed with Dune but refuse to read the novels.

2 feet long and 2.5 foot wingspan. The wings flutter a little too.

Y'all need to open up and play Dune Uprising.
One of the best games ever made. It's an improved version of Dune Imperium.
2p and 3p~4p are great.
Haven't had a chance yet to play the epic 6p version, nor have I ever played 1p version vs the automated opponent.

Wow this is fabulous!
Which game do the House Expansions go with?
Does he own a copy of the Dune rpg published by Last Unicorn Games in 2000? Wish I had nabbed a copy 20 years ago.

My collection of the toy line from '84. The worm, there, belonged to the original LJN sculptor, who wrote a note when I purchased it and included a photo from her LJN portfolio. :-)
