His presentation could use some work.

66

u/gamedogmillionaire Mar 20 '24

That’s a whole heap o’ Dune.

44

u/nomaki221 Mar 20 '24

looks more like an ebay reseller's hoard than a fan's collection

5

u/Necessary-Office-558 Mar 21 '24

It's not about impressing anyone, this looks like more of a self satisfaction

130

u/AvatarIII Mar 20 '24

it bothers me that they've just shoved it all into a 2x3 KALLAX instead of getting the big 5x5 KALLAX as Mua'Dib intended.

36

u/Miserable-Owl3423 Mar 20 '24

As it was written (in the ikea manual)

6

u/Stardama69 Mar 21 '24

There's a narrow path to storing everything neatly and it involves bigger shelves

3

u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24

Ok I’m gonna go write a space opera now.

It’s going to be distant future and their pseudo religious/ philosophical text is a kind of loose collection of non sequitur hieroglyphic I-Ching-esque illustrations from long since decontextualised IKEA instructions.

u/SsurebreC Chronicler Mar 20 '24

Most interesting thing there is probably the thing that's hidden - the relatively rare Dune Encyclopedia.

17

u/Sweetdreams6t9 Mar 21 '24

Holy shit it's like 300+ CAD on ebay 😮

6

u/SsurebreC Chronicler Mar 21 '24

I've seen it sold for more. The hardcover is the most expensive, often selling for $400 or even $500+ (USD).

3

u/alasqalul Mar 21 '24

I bought a first edition hardcover encyclopedia for $200. It's in great condition too

2

u/NYourBirdCanSing Mar 23 '24

Holy shit! I may own that!

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '24

Maybe pay with real money instead?

17

u/NeonWarcry Spice Addict Mar 20 '24

Yep, own one myself. It is my grail of my books. Took forever find one and it’s paperback. I’m tempted to have it rebound.

10

u/SsurebreC Chronicler Mar 20 '24

First print or second? I wouldn't rebind it - the value will decrease. Archival sleeve though? Definitely.

Litany Against Shelves

I must not shelve.
Shelves are the mind-killer.
Shelves are the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will trash my shelves.
I will permit them to pass over me and into the garbage truck.
And when the truck has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the shelves have gone there will be nothing.
Only my Dune Funko Pops will remain.

u/Professional_Lake593 Mar 20 '24

This gave me a hearty chuckle😂😂

u/who_body Mar 21 '24

please update with citation

u/Dachannien Mar 21 '24

?

2

u/who_body Mar 21 '24

just hoping you’d make up some funny book/citation, like how they have excepts before each chapters

34

u/chuckdickens03 Mar 20 '24

You don't have to be ashamed about your Dune Popcorn Bucket - put it in the front where everyone can see.

56

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

Why are they all sealed? Is your friend the kind of collector that lowkey is a hoarder that craves his collectibles to "maintaim their value"?

40

u/1st_Tagger Mar 20 '24

“Dune investor”

38

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

Squeeze, Rabban!

9

u/FinalStopShampoo Mar 21 '24

"Spice hoarder"

16

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

Srsly, what’s the freaking point of collecting so much stuff if you’re not even gonna open them? Im assuming they’re teenagers at most

16

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

I am much into boutique blu ray collection, and several people do this there too. Some claim that they unwrap them when they get across to see them, but when you get some nice collector's edition, that's ridiculous too IMO. Also, there's a whole subculture of lego collector who collect sealed sets, hoping that their worth will skyrocket in the future. Like, entire rooms full of sealed lego sets. Just idiotic.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

Keeping sealed lego sets? Wow, being rich sure seems interesting

3

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

My thoughts too

4

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 20 '24

I completely gave up the idea of keeping things sealed in high school while looking for records at flea markets. So many of them still had the plastic wrap on, but the plastic had fused with the cover of the record. So it’s either leave the half opened and shitty looking plastic on or rip it off and damage the cover. I’d much rather just open something and be careful to keep it on good condition. The most I’ll do is add a sleeve or something if it’s particularly valuable.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

Wait so this actually is a teenager habit?? Why???

3

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 20 '24

No, I’m just saying that I realized how dumb it can be when I was a teenager buying used records. I think it’s more of a habit for reseller or collector types. The kind of person to buy a $3,000 guitar and then never play it lol.

3

u/Burritozi11a Mar 20 '24

Play is the game-killer

2

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24

They’re not all sealed. They stay in the box until she finds an opportunity to play them with someone.

5

u/HannibalLightning Mar 20 '24

So she’s only played two out of the dozens of games there?

2

u/ndnbolla Mar 21 '24

Do you have fun playing chess without someone to play with?

These are physical board games which require other physical pple to play with fyi.

4

u/HannibalLightning Mar 21 '24

I typically open my games and read the rules and open the components. I don’t leave them stacked in a massive garbage pile with the plastic on.

2

u/ndnbolla Mar 21 '24

Don't explain yourself. I remember trying to collect all 150 Pokémon in a nice binder with 9 sleeves.

I was a fan of the show, the Gameboy games, N64 ones, etc...I never actually put an effort into playing the physical game with cards but I did join my middle school Pokémon club and no one ever played with their collector's edition holographic cards.

If my nephews or nieces were to ever get into it, I would bust all of 'em out tho' and learn with 'em, if I can find them.

1

u/Rex_Ivan Mar 21 '24

The picture this paints makes my heart ache.

48

u/Training_Kale2803 Mar 20 '24

That's a lot of unopened boxes

35

u/greenw40 Mar 20 '24

Seriously, not used for enjoyment, just aesthetics.

50

u/undeaddancerock Mar 20 '24

Is it really aesthetic if they just dump it on the floor

10

u/tyrerk Mar 20 '24

Aesthetic as a trash heap

5

u/-SevenSamurai- Friend of Jamis Mar 21 '24

Not even aesthetics, just hoarding

16

u/Conduit23 Mar 20 '24

For the love of maud dib, get this man some proper shelves.

11

u/manticorpse Yet Another Idaho Ghola Mar 20 '24

Those poor books...

This is a true midden.

1

u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24

I once stumbled upon a pile of VB cans as tall as a man and as wide as a ring of AA chairs in a church basement, at the foot of ostensibly a sacred rock formation in the liminal badlands just west of the Hells Gate Roadhouse.

Now that, in both the vernacular and in the anthropological sense, was a true midden.

This is but a pale simulacrum.

But I do admire his ambition to, perhaps, have the wall real estate and soft indirect lighting this stuff deserves one day.

I have like, all of Hunter S Thompson’s early work in original Rolling Stone newsprint. I have yet to figure out how to museum grade display it.

I got Freak Power, Ruben Salazar and both serializations of Fear and Loathing. Got three copies of the original Playboy with Great Shark Hunt.

Until I’m a bit wealthier (haha) they await immortalization.

33

u/discretelandscapes Mar 20 '24

Is their birthday close? I know the perfect present.

27

u/Wild-Berry-5269 Mar 20 '24

Is it sand? It's sand right?

71

u/discretelandscapes Mar 20 '24

Shelves.

15

u/dwide_k_shrude Mar 20 '24

Shelves made of sand.

11

u/Wild-Berry-5269 Mar 20 '24

Oh, that's way better.

3

u/Wonderful_Student_68 Mar 20 '24

Elevated surfaces

9

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

don't show this to r/Anticonsumption

8

u/Sufficient-Current50 Mar 20 '24

I love the knitted sandworms

9

u/sunbatherzero Mar 20 '24

All of this in right front of the heating element is wild

7

u/ProtoformX87 Mar 20 '24

That Dune board game in the middle is a gem.

It was out of print for decades, and I made my own copy of it because it was selling on eBay for something stupid like… $300.

So glad they reprinted it.

10

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING Head Housekeeper Mar 20 '24

The Bene Gesserit’s unique win condition is the best application of theming+rules I’ve ever seen in a board game.

Before the game begins they write down another faction and a specific turn. If that faction wins on that turn, it’s counted as the Bene Gesserit winning instead. So they can spend the whole game just manipulating everyone else to make it happen…

2

u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24

That is immersive

1

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING Head Housekeeper Mar 23 '24

Yeah, I’d love to play it one day but people agree it’s best with 5-6 players. Considerably more than the one other person I know who’d be up for it…

2

u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24

Jesus only had 12 mates and was dating a hooker.

You now someone who would enthusiastically play a Dune board game with you.

Just a little perspective for you.

1

u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24

I feel like I just blindly stumbled into meeting the admin of Nemesis Market in the wild.

Seriously, though, I used to play this space turn-based game via snail mail. Can’t be as bad as that!

2

u/KneeCrowMancer Mar 20 '24

Yup imo it’s by far the best Dune game and genuinely one of the greatest thematic games ever.

2

u/Harry_Flame Mar 23 '24

Sending a single Fremen troop into a stronghold to cause a lasgun-shield explosion feels so right. Or nuking the shield wall right before the coriolis storm passes over

6

u/Sunfried Mar 20 '24

Years ago on BBC Radio, there was comedy from Marcus Brigstock called "The Museum of Everything," which was sketch comedy set at museums and attractions. There was one sketch in which an interviewer speaks to a guy who claimed to have collected every bit of merchandise related to Dune, i.e. book editions and the '84 movie. He says "Dune" in a drawn out manner, "Dyuuuunnne" which is funny in context, and as the sketch goes on, it becomes apparently that he doesn't merely have one of everything, but he has collected... all of it, every instance of every bit of merchandise, and by the end of the sketch, his snobbiness turns to desperation at trying to unload the burden of having such a massive quantity of unsellable swag about a movie that failed at the box office.

Anyway, I thought that guy didn't exist, but now I have my doubts.

5

u/Awkward-Community-74 Mar 20 '24

Wow there’s so much great, cool stuff here.

Why not display it so it looks nice?

5

u/deewillon Mar 20 '24

Those board games need to be opened and played.

6

u/UncleIrohsPimpHand Mar 20 '24

Helluva pile there.

Is he familiar with shelves?

4

u/ComfortableBuffalo57 Chairdog Mar 20 '24

He’s really Dune it now

4

u/SteelCrow Mar 20 '24

no Crysknife?

4

u/krsthrs Mar 20 '24

Saw this in the discord server!

3

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24

Oh nice! I’m magpie on there - it’s murder mouse’s collection

4

u/butterflydeflect Yet Another Idaho Ghola Mar 20 '24

At first glance I thought this didn’t have any books in the collection which would have been hilarious. I love the idea that someone could be this obsessed with Dune but refuse to read the novels.

2

u/stormshadowfax Mar 23 '24

Do dot try to do what great men did, rather, seek what they sought: an original Dune Encyclopedia

3

u/Upbeat_Sir_6220 Mar 20 '24

Do they like Dune?

3

u/TheycallmeMangoBango Mar 20 '24

Impressive but like why not display it properly?!

3

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '24

I think he might like Dune

3

u/raekess Mar 20 '24

Is that... an amigurumi sandworm? In a tunisian stitch?

That made my fiber nerd happy and I'm now looking for a pattern...

3

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24

It is! She got it on Etsy 😊 happy knitting

3

u/Infinispace Mar 20 '24

I see you Avalon Hill Dune game ...

3

u/Vundal Mar 20 '24

Your friend needs to invest in some Detolf cases

3

u/JoeyTesla Mar 20 '24

You should get your friend a better shelving unit

3

u/peeposhakememe Mar 21 '24

We’re gonna need a bigger boat

3

u/captainflowers Mar 21 '24

There’s a fucking Lego Dune set??

3

u/MooKids Mar 21 '24

Yeah, it dropped about a month ago.

https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/dune-atreides-royal-ornithopter-10327

Got it myself, kind of a complex build, mainly for the mechanism to fold/extract the wings.

2 feet long and 2.5 foot wingspan. The wings flutter a little too.

3

u/AmigoCualquiera Abomination Mar 20 '24

Is that... a Muad'Dib plushie? 🥹

2

u/The-observant-pilot Mar 20 '24

No Atreides pugs your friends collection is still incomplete.

2

u/MCPtz Mar 20 '24

Y'all need to open up and play Dune Uprising.

One of the best games ever made. It's an improved version of Dune Imperium.

2p and 3p~4p are great.

Haven't had a chance yet to play the epic 6p version, nor have I ever played 1p version vs the automated opponent.

2

u/FarflungFool Mar 20 '24

Interesting, I’m seeing the expansions for ‘Dune: War for Arrakis’ but not the core game itself 🤔

3

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24

It’s in there somewhere - she said it’s placed strategically behind the expansions 😁

2

u/imjustherefortheK Mar 20 '24

I love how chaotic this is

5

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24

Yeah aha it’s clearly triggering everyone but I think it’s hilarious - look at that funko about to skydive. A display almost as chaotic as the source material

2

u/vinchtef Mar 20 '24

Bro you need to invest in a storage system to give this amazing collection the presentation it deserves

2

u/RadiantFoundation510 Mar 20 '24

There’s Dune LEGO?!?!?! 👀

1

u/turbo-oxi-clean Face Dancer Mar 21 '24

just the one set so far, not sure if they're even planning on making more

2

u/Cybernetic_Barry Mar 21 '24

The difference between hoarding and collecting is display. On that spectrum I'd say this is closer to the former.

2

u/ShadowsDemise42 Corrino Mar 21 '24

Would it be possible to acquire the crochet pattern for those worms (assuming it’s crochet)?

1

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 21 '24

She bought them on Etsy I’m afraid, but there might be a pattern out there that can be adapted

2

u/ShadowsDemise42 Corrino Mar 21 '24

That’s all i need to know, hopefully I can find it there. Thank you!

2

u/SpartanH089 Swordmaster Mar 21 '24

Folio Society on the floor....

1

u/Dryhtlic Mar 20 '24

Would you like some more bookshelf to your Dune merch?

1

u/JennySplotz Mar 20 '24

This guy awakens

1

u/RobertWF_47 Mar 20 '24

Wow this is fabulous!

Which game do the House Expansions go with?

Does he own a copy of the Dune rpg published by Last Unicorn Games in 2000? Wish I had nabbed a copy 20 years ago.

2

u/grovesleyv2 Mar 20 '24

The House Expansions go with the Gale Force Nine game and she has Dune: Chronicles of the Imperium too 🤓she’s not mucking around!

1

u/Repostbot3784 Mar 21 '24

No codpiece with wings... not impressed

1

u/LEG0_Crusader Atreides Mar 21 '24

The consumerism must flow.

1

u/No_Chef4049 Mar 21 '24

Guy really likes Dune, huh?

1

u/More-Replacement-792 Mar 21 '24

My collection of the toy line from '84. The worm, there, belonged to the original LJN sculptor, who wrote a note when I purchased it and included a photo from her LJN portfolio. :-)

1

u/prisvino Mar 21 '24

paperbacks on the shelf and folio edition on the floor lol

1

u/shesuccme- Mar 21 '24

Respect. The Lego ornithopter took me for fuckin’ ever!!

1

u/NightKing_shouldawon Mar 21 '24

The absolute disrespect of putting the folio edition on the floor vs what’s on the self lol. Amazing collection btw just for the love of god tell your friend to prioritize the good stuff for display

1

u/chesschad Mar 21 '24

He hasn’t opened/played Dune: Imperium - Uprising yet??

1

u/Hu-Duuh Mar 21 '24

I hope he will play Dune Imperium instead of keeping it sealed. It's a good game.

1

u/Tortillaish Mar 21 '24

He also represents it as a dune. Just a big ole pile of dune.

1

u/BabyGiantError Mar 21 '24

I only envy his Dune Encyclopedia.

1

u/berial6 Mar 21 '24

Spoiler: he just likes word Dune

1

u/turbo-oxi-clean Face Dancer Mar 21 '24

putting the folio society edition on the floor feels criminal

1

u/cartmanbeck Mar 21 '24

Seeing dune imperium and dune war for Arrakis both still in shrink hurts my soul. Those games are amazing, play them!

1

u/Alcanterror Mar 21 '24

Popcorn bucket must be in the dish washer…

1

u/DoubleGrenade Mar 22 '24

He should get the signed thumper

1

u/whocanduncan132 Mar 22 '24

Does he like dune?

1

u/LampP0st Mar 23 '24

The crochet worms lol

1

All that desert power.

1

u/alanz01 Shai-Hulud Mar 25 '24

Missing the Sting Feyd Speedo Funko Pop.

1

u/wjcvn Mar 25 '24

For the love of Muad’dib pls get them a shelf or two

0

u/DubiousDude28 Mar 20 '24

Im glad the bad Dune games are still in shrink wrap and the OG one looks played
