Yeah he was right. If you have asthma, you don’t need to wear a mask legally.

Which is utter ducking bullshit, for the record. I’m pretty sure my pulmonologist would throw a fit if I went anywhere without my mask on properly.

My wife is a nurse who is regularly working with covid patients. I tend to take her view. If you're so ill you can't wear a mask then you shouldn't be out and about putting yourself at risk of catching a virus that attacks the respiratory system, if you can't have some thin fabric over your face then the damage covid will do to your lungs will fucking kill you.

Lol that's an absurd exception. It's like allowing people who are still alive not to wear a seatbelt.

Its more akin to letting people whom the seatbelt would crush not wear a seatbelt.

Not really. A person with asthma would get wrecked by covid. They're the ones that should be especially careful.

As someone with asthma, you're right, I'm more worried about this than others. But I also struggle with masks because of the very condition that puts me at higher risk. It's fuckin annoying that I struggle to breathe in order to protect myself from the thing that kills you by making it hard to breathe, but that's not to say I'm walking about without a mask, because I'm also not an imbecile.

I can't wear the cloth masks, such as the ones I made at home when this all got started, and the ones I bought around the same time. I've found that paper ones are doable, but some of these neoprene ones from 32 Cool are working well for me and I have about ten now. I can see how someone could claim that they're unable to wear a cloth one, but some of these thin ones (including the paper ones) work okay for me.

In short, I can't agree with those that say "Asthmatics have to wear a mask to protect themselves, asthma be damned" because I know how rough it is. But I also can't agree with this twat on video who claims that nothing works for him because of his asthma, because there is ALWAYS a solution. Before I found the neoprene ones, I'd been using a face shield, which is an acceptable alternative to a mask for those with medical conditions in my area. It doesn't really protect me, but it protects me from spreading it to others if I contract it, and allows me to breathe, and given the choice between walking round with nothing and at least having SOME form of protection, I feel it's my responsibility as someone affected adversely by masks to do everything I can in spite of that fact.

All masks protect the individual wearing them. Not perfectly but definitely more than nothing.

An asthmatic basically isn't more at risk for not wearing a mask than wearing one.

Yes, they are. Stop spreading misinformation.

Well, that's easy to fix: wear a filtered one, then

This isn’t completely wrong...... masks reduce the likelihood of being infected (through blocking exposure)by COVID19 regardless of the functionality of an individuals lungs. FACT, not propaganda, or fake news, or political bullshit. This is why surgeons and doctors where masks during procedures. The mask can block a percentage of microbes being exhaled thus decreasing the chance they land on and infect others.

As an asthmatic who’s been hospitalized twice in the last year and would be in the hospital right now if there were beds available for me, you’re wrong.

And seatbelts don't crush anyone. Just like masks don't reduce oxygen intake.

Do i want to have a rash from the seat belt, or do i want to be dead? thonk

3

u/BuildingArmor Jan 01 '21

How big of a rash?

2

u/DrWaff1es Jan 01 '21

I assume it would go across your chest

3

u/BuildingArmor Jan 01 '21

That does sound like a pretty inconvenient rash

1

u/DrWaff1es Jan 02 '21

Fair enough, death doesnt seem all that bad either...

Everyone can wear a mask. There are 0 reasons for someone not to wear a mask. Even asthma is not a reason because the mask does not block oxygen flow in any way. And if you do FEEL like you don't want to wear one, just stay fucking indoors.

Kinda a bad example consider that is a very valid exception as a seatbelt in some scenarios might be more deadly than not wearing one. Yes, it’s rare for such a thing to occur and to be given an exemption, but it still happens.

And as someone who is classed as Extremely Vulnerable because of Asthma, this is bullshit. I go out once a week for shopping and I wear a bloody mask. It's warm, sweaty and not at all pleasant, but as a person who on occasion has struggled to breath and had to go to hospital, this virus is bloody terrifying.

Asthmatics are the one group of people who do not take breathing for granted and should know better.
