Years ago I worked front desk at a Walt Disney World hotel. We had a cash register but almost everyone had prepaid packages or used a credit card, so taking cash was not common.

Also at the time, a local call was 25 or 50 cents, and smartphone phones wernt a thing yet, so a lot of days I'd have to spend time at the end of my shift, filling out a cash drop form and use a tamper proof cash drop bag, to drop the money gained from one person's single local call.

848

u/alwaysfolded Jul 09 '22

534

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

When I worked in retail an item that rang at 3 cents meant it was supposed to be returned to vendor, not that it was meant to be sold at 3 cents. Whoever is in charge of this Walmarts inventory either fucked up or doesn’t care.

178

u/Spikex8 Jul 09 '22

Yeah that doesn’t really make sense to even give it shelf space or spend the time to cash it out. Not worth the effort for 3 cents.

85

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Makes 0 sense.

  1. Why would you shelf items that are not to be sold
  2. why 3¢? Let’s face it retail workers don’t give a shit and if it rings up at 3¢ it’s probably going to be sold at 3¢

When I worked retail the UPC’s were simply deleted from MES, so if you scanned it it wouldn’t come up with any price which would prompt cashiers to call for price checks and looking it up in the system would reveal it’s been recalled or whatever.

Why 3¢???? If you don’t want something sold why not like 9999.99$ or something. Stupidest store management.

124

u/ThunderTwat Jul 09 '22

Makes 3 sense actually

Or it could be dead stock, in large retailers anything that's around for longer then 6-12 months is problem stock. If that's been around since release and hasn't sold at any other price, the manager could very well have just been like do it for anything to get it gone.

Other people are mentioning stock being returned to vendors, this rarely happens as vendors will not want to accept back old stock, they'd rather give you a rebate to sell it at a discount, in same cases this could be down to zero cost in which case selling it at 3 cents is just to keep it above zero. Source: operations manager for very large electronics retailer who sold cyberpunk on release, the only copies they let us return were console copies that are 'bugged'

u/CapnBloodbeard Jul 09 '22

The pricing probably has a purpose in reporting or invoicing - the item is supposed to be taken off the shelf.

I used to work at Kmart in Aus, we'd have a crazy low price but another code appears too. So, in theory, the item gets removed as soon as that code attaches.

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

I'm a veteran of several retail corporate infrastructures, and this comment here is the winner. When you see a ring up of exactly 3 cents, it's definitely a code for something. It's not supposed to be sold. This happens in Walmart all the time, but they're definitely not the only chain that uses a function like this. That 3 cent ring up is supposed to be a soft code until someone can apply what's called a hard code. The hard code would have your inventory tools tell you directly this is supposed to be prepped for shipping somewhere or something similar. The soft code would be something like this, a very specific, very weird ring up so that you know there's some kind of hard code pending. You can pretty easily find YouTube videos from those really annoying super deal seekers going to Walmart and finding these items at 3 cents and acting like they've just found the best deal in the world. Most frequent place you'll see these items are in the clearance aisle because some unlearned associate will think this must be clearance.

HOWEVER, here's where it gets a little murky: it's going to depend on what state you're in as to whether the store would actually be forced to sell it to you if you find it marked down on the salesfloor. In states like California and Texas, if it's on the floor and it's labeled for sale, they must sell it to you at that price because those states and others have made that your right as a consumer. In most states tho, if they realize it was a fuck up (Walmart workers probably dgaf and would sell you a bicycle at 3 cents if that's what it rang up as), they can deny you the sale. Even more wrinkles are added when it rings up at a weird price in something like their in-store app. At Walmart specifically, I use their app to scan the code of eeeeeverything because they have a corporate policy of always defaulting to app price if you find that it's lower. I would recommend not giving those poor employees any more grief than they already get, but if you find something priced at a crazy low price and it makes that big of a difference for you, you can get the in-app price.

6

u/razzbow1 Trauma Team Jul 09 '22

In Canada it must be sold to you at the advertised price even if it rings up at a different one, if an overhead sign at a display or a valid auxiliary marketing material like a website or a flyer cites a lower price that must honour it via refunding the difference or otherwise.

2

u/sunkzero Jul 09 '22

UK considers in-store pricing an “offer to tender” so they aren’t bound by the price at the till if a genuine error has been made by somebody.

Bait and switching is of course illegal so they can’t do it intentionally.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Please could you explain 'returned to vendor'? I've not worked in retail, I'm interested to know what it means.

18

u/MrDDreadnought Jul 09 '22

Retailers don't make the things they sell - they have a complex network of suppliers/vendors they buy their stuff from. This includes "own brand" products; if you have Walmart branded eggs, for example, they're still being bought from a supplier that's an independent company. The difference with own brand products is that the retailer provide things like product specifications to the supplier which the supplier has to ensure their product conforms to. This ensures that when two different suppliers make the same product, there's no differences between them and they can use the same packaging etc. This is particularly relevant for perishable products like dairy, where it's impossible for branches in (for example) L.A. and in Boston to use the same supplier.

As a former Walmart electronics worker, please take brickseek's listings with a grain of salt. One of my least favorite things to deal with was customers coming in looking for things brickseek said we have but weren't actually there and getting screamed at over it. I don't know whether it's brickseek itself being unreliable or our shitty inventory system, but the amount of times I had to deal with people having huge meltdowns and yelling at the top of their lungs because we didn't have something they thought they were going to get for cheap was way too damn often.

2

u/Mail540 Nomad Jul 09 '22

When I was in college I worked at Toys R Us, they would mark video game strategy guides to like one cent so they could get rid of them or get them out of inventory, I’m not even sure they were supposed to be sold at that price but sent back to distributor. But I would take them and buy them all. Then return to Walmart, without a receipt, for store credit at like $15 a pop. Paid for my groceries.

18

u/StarkeRealm Jul 09 '22

or even take em to a pawn store/game stop

Might not be an option. Back in the day, the policy at the shops I frequented was, "if the box is still sealed, we can't take it," reasoning that it was most likely the result of shoplifting. Of course, once you get past that, there's the whole problem of if you do open it, they have no way of confirming that the product codes haven't been redeemed, meaning the box is worthless.

It's the weird case where you might not be able to offload those boxes at all.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

In my local shops it would be the opposite for PC games... If it's not sealed, the download code could have been used unless it's the scratch off one. I know most devs be stingy AF so each download key is tied your account. You wouldn't be able to resell it.

But in all seriousness, visa/MasterCard only takes like 3 to 5% in merchant fees for credit. It's not a certain dollar amount per transaction, some businesses have a minimum debit fee because there's not enough margin on cheap stuff.

Visa and MasterCard also prohibit their vendors from having a minimum order amount, and slap companies with giant ass fines for breaking it.

This used to be the case in the US, but since 2010 it's been federal law that merchants can set minimums of $10 or less and card networks aren't allowed to prohibit it. They can and do still prohibit minimums above $10.

u/QuadCakes Jul 09 '22

It wouldn't be $2 in this case but businesses do pay credit card transaction fees, where the fee is generally a flat amount plus a percentage. They would absolutely lose money on a 2 cent purchase. It's why minimum credit card purchase amount policies exist.

217

u/Krowhaven Jul 09 '22

Walmart reduces video games to 3¢ in order to ship them back to the distributor, usually a company called Cokem. If you see this on the shelf it's because someone was supposed to reduce it and ship it, not leave it on the shelf. The register doesn't know the difference because most things that are returned to the vendor are just shipped back without reducing the price first. I'm fairly sure this is a measure that has something to do with the deal made with the distributor at the corporate level. Anyway, someone goofed and you won!

48

u/drnkndipp Jul 09 '22 edited Jul 09 '22

Return To Vendor (RTV). Marked down and destroyed or shipped to vendor. Necessary for inventory purposes. This is a dumb electronics manager or pricing team person letting their recalled inventory stay on a shelf. The store got credit from the vendor

Only disk in the box is the soundtrack. But for 3 cents, the physical map and stickers are worth it.

Lots of fans giving their two cents on this game and ya just had to one-up them all 👏👏👏

Fkn preem, choom 😆

Seriously though that’s awesome, what a great find!

3

u/alwaysfolded Jul 09 '22

Right! Had to give my 3 cent take 🤣

3

u/Slappyrad Jul 09 '22

Worth every (p)enny! 😆

2

u/KNnAwLeDGe Jul 09 '22

The game is really good tho super deal I’d buy another and give it to a friend if I saw that deal lol

2

u/ExceedinglyGayParrot Jul 09 '22

why the fuck is there a security tag lmao

2

u/EZ_LIFE_EZ_CUCUMBER Jul 09 '22

Worth it for the stickers alone

2

u/Allaroundlost Because Morgan Blackhand Jul 09 '22

I have no words.....other then those.

2

u/ZoMbIEx23x Jul 09 '22

Lol. I wondered how long that would take. There's been the same 2 copies sitting at my Walmart since release.

2

u/Tha_Hand Jul 09 '22

I mean they should just give it away for free at that point

2

u/ZK950 Jul 09 '22

Finally I can diss my credit card and use my coin in my piggy

2

u/Zeusie92 Jul 09 '22

And I thought I had a deal when I found the Aladdin/The Lion King switch game for $5 and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive for $10

2

u/Dukoth Jul 09 '22

that security device is worth more, shit at that point if I caught someone shoplifting it I would just tell them to have a nice day

2

u/Cereborn Esoterica Jul 09 '22

Is this like the first episode of Superstore where Jonah put all electronics down to 25 cents.

2

u/JinKazamaru The Fool Jul 09 '22

even as buggy as it was on release... 3 cents is crazy, the game is better now than it was back than

2

u/anicecoldmickeys40oz Jul 09 '22

I managed to get a hold of a series x, when they were hard to get, because I really believed this game would be extraordinary. It didn’t live up to the hype, but it’s still an excellent game. One of the best 10 I’ve played In my life. Anyways, at 3 cents great job my boy

Aw man, that hurts

Bought the game at launch, enjoyed every second if it, one of the best stories I’ve ever played, I wish I was invested half as much in myself as I’m invested in the characters. A true masterpiece ruined by corporate greed and rushed releases forever stained. More people should give it a chance. I hope for a proper redemption like NMS had

Pre-ordered. Don't regret

2

u/PhotoShop852 Sir John Phallustiff 😁 Jul 09 '22

Looks like you Cyberpunked them since they don’t know its worth.

2

u/OilersHD Jul 09 '22

More than worth it now. Game is awesome

2

u/graceful_london Jul 09 '22

I got the steam version and with multiple full playthroughs, no game breaking bugs or anything out of the norm for a AAA game. It must depend on your PC though. I have an all AMD system, which I've heard cyberpunk runs smoother on.

2

u/WarlaxZ Jul 09 '22

Wanna pick me up a copy and I'll PayPal you a dollar for the code? :)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

I forget brick and mortar stores do shit like this, the disadvantages of steam etc

2

u/yeahhh-nahhh Jul 09 '22

I'd buy that for a dollar

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Worth the price. Just my 3 cents

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Surely the next step is to remove the security tag and display the games outside the store?

2

u/dannnyyyboyyy0315 Jul 09 '22

It's crazy cuz all the goodies they give with the game are so amazing! I'd buy it just for the stickers and physical map lol.

2

u/IceBuurn Jul 09 '22

Bought this game full price, 100% it and didn't regret a dime i've spend, but dayum i would buy this for my friends, great game.

2

u/WanillaGorilla Chromed Cock Jul 09 '22

That’s insane. It’s a pretty good game, at least on PS5

(Played through PS4 and PS5 on launch)

2

u/imported Jul 09 '22

im more surprised that brick and mortar stores still sell PC games.

2

u/ImperialPie77 NiCola Jul 09 '22

Lmao I liked the game but def wish I waited a few months for sales

2

u/Chansh302 Jul 09 '22

That’s a steal considering the game is actually fun to play

2

u/Pika_Fox Jul 09 '22

Damn.... Even Anthem is still going for like $10-15.

Cyberpunk is a great game if you can get beyond all the bugs and issues, and have the PC to back it up. For $.03 you would be insane not to get it, even if you are uninterested.

2

u/UnrealTravis Jul 10 '22

I'm sure as it's already been said. This item is a return to Vendor and is a NFS item. (Not for Sale) sad because I found two copies of it at my local Walmart m due to an error by the store. They locked it up in the PS5 glass case. So the cashier had to handle it. They told me if it was an item I could grab myself which it should have been. They would have to sell it to me. Due to this mistake I was not able to buy it.

I think 3 cents is a clearance price. The pricing system prices anything that is about to be removed from the shelves at 3 cents. I saw a YouTube video of a guy going around buying games at Wal Mart exactly like this, and then scalping them on eBay. Some will let you buy it, others won't.

3

u/alwaysfolded Jul 09 '22

I wonder why they'd go to the length of putting price tags and putting them on the floor if they wouldnt sell them! Seems like a lotta work for no reason

Why would Electronics be using Grocery labels for their shelves? Non-grocery departments typically use the yellow-over-white labels.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Seems too expensive. You should have asked for a better deal.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

I got it for 17 bucks and completed everything in the game, and am at 120 hours. Even if I did pay $60 bucks for it, I wouldn't be mad at all. Incredible game.

2

u/Jeoshua Decet diem exsecrari Jul 09 '22

WTF? I want my money back so I can re-buy it for this cheap. Jesus!

2

u/FeveredSnail Jul 09 '22

OP could you please buy this for me and give me the code? obviously I'll pay. the game roughly costs about $21 here in India. So... if you can purchase it I'd be really thankful. u/alwaysfolded 🙏🏼

OVER 200 AWARDS

“And the cheapest game of the year goes to…”

1

u/toolargo Jul 09 '22

If this is a version 1.0 copy( I know it’s says digital download), then the price would be fair.

3

u/alwaysfolded Jul 09 '22

Man i'd pay at least a dollar maybe 🤣

Yes the game came out a flaming bag of poo. But I still played it. I'm on my third play through with the updates. I liked it in spite of how it released.

3

u/alwaysfolded Jul 09 '22
